Text from Pages 1 - 312 of the 1973 volume:

Johnson C. Smith University is more than. just an institution. While giving us intellectual stimulation, she has helped us to become better people. We ' ould not be what we are today had it not been for her. Smith has helped us to prepare for one of the most important days of our lives — tomorrow. We came to Smith with just oae purpose in mind — to be somebody. Because of her, that ' s not just a dream anymore. J.C.S.U. holds many memories for all of us. Now is the time to recognize ourselves and our world as they are and to look with determination toward what we and it can be. It is the time to place our faith not in something, but in life. We can change this world, if only by changing ourselves. From this point on, it is up to all of us to pursue life. If we seek true harmony with each other, each of us will be the oasis the other has been seeking. It is to those of you who are not afraid to reach out, those who can relate to one another, and are willing to work at letting each other know it, that we dedicate this 1973 edition of THE BULL. The Essence of Life is man and woman . . . giving, doing, growing, shar- ing, dreaming, hoping, seeking, flnding, feeling, believing, loving, daring to be themselves. Brothers and sisters, let there be life. EDITOR-IN-CHIEF - Brenda Shepard SPECIAL ASSISTANT - Jennifer Simmons ASSOCIATE EDITOR - Clyde MacMillian BUSINESS MANAGER — Kelvin Crenshaw ADVISOR — Miss Odessa Roseboro DEDICATION We were both new and eager to prove that we could stand the pressure and accomplish the task that we had set out to do. And time proved us right. Dr. Newsom, you demonstrated not only ability, but you showed us another side not often seen by students in an educational institution. You showed us the human side. We could always depend on a warm smile and a heart handshake. Your doors were always open, ready and willing to listen to our complaints and problems. You were a friend to us when we needed a friend most. The Senior Class takes great pride in dedicating this edition of The Bull to you, Dr. Newsom, for trulv vou deserve it. DR. LIONEL H. NEWSOM mh PresitlenI ■lohnsim C. Smith I nirir.sK.v THE PRESIDENT ' S CHARGE TO THE CLASS OF 1971 Today, the sixteenth day of May, in the year of our Lord, one thousand nine hundred seventy one belongs to you only, and yet it belongs to you individually and collectively. You are among a precious few black youths who will receive the baccalaureate de- grees this year. This is true in spite of the fact that this is the largest class in the history of Johnson C. Smith University. Your challenge is to work with all your strength, mind and soul in order that it may be possible for many more to follow you. If we are to overcome the bitterness of oppression, the hurt of persecution, the hunger pangs of poverty, and the deliberate denials of our civil rights, many, many more must pass this way. You are tomorrow ' s leaders, like it or not, the responsibilities and penalties of leadership will be thrust upon you. Therefore, you should wear the name of Johnson C. Smith with noble pride and human dignity. NEWSOM ALPHA ' S MAN OF THE YEAR Dr. Lionel H. Newsom was named Man of the Year by the Beta Nu Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., of Charlotte. N. C. He was selected because of his out- standing service to the Charlotte community and Johnson C. Smith University. The Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity awarded Attorney Julius Chambers the award last year because of his outstanding work in civil rights. Dr. Newsom is a member of the fraternity and more than thirty-five thousand men have been initiated into Alpha Phi Alpha since its found- ing in 1906 at Cornell University. The fraternity has been interracial since 1945 and there are now 155 college chapters and ' 220 alumni chapters in the 41 states including Africa, the West Indies. Europe and Vietnam. Since the announcing of Dr. New- som ' s resignation as president of Johnson C. Smith University he has been honored numerous times prior to his departure to Central State University, Wilberforce, Ohio where he is to assume his new presidency. PRESIDENT LIONEL H. NEWSOM was elected a member of the Charlotte Board of North Carolina National Bank. Durmg the year, Dr. Newsom received another precedent appointment in Charlotte when he became a member of the Charlotte Civil Service Board. He became the first Black member and will serve a two-vear term on the five-man committee. BUILD A NEW JERUSALEM Most of us are from, what was called when I was young, the slum; but now we ' ve given it a fancy name called the ghetto. It ' s the same. The houses are dilapi- dated; the rats are as big as cats. Roaches still run across your beds. We still have outhouses, and we still live without electricity. We have the highest rate of crime, the highest incident of infant mortality, the highest tubercular rate, (and we could go down the line listing all of these things.) And the highest il- literacy rate. How are we going to change h ' We are only going to change it in institutions like Johnson C. Smith University. One writer said — and I think that it was William Blake — Bring me my bow of gleaming gold. Bring me my idles of desire. My sword shall not sleep in mv hand, oh chariot of fire. We shall build within this country a new Jerusalem. We shall build Johnson C. Smith a stronger and a better institution. We must do this not by ' burn baby burn. I know that the ten- sions are high in the ghetto, but we only burn our- selves up. increase the poverty, and raise the pile of ashes high. But. what we should be saying is to get mad with opportunity — learn baby learn. Your parents, relatives and friends want to help. I have talked with many parents who have come to me about you; I have talked to you, and I will continue as all of these other people will continue to work with you to help you become what you want to become. The only way we can do that is by having your help. SPECIAL TRIBUTE At the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City. Vince was the winner of a Gold medal. He was the lead man on the United States team composed of Ron Freeman (University of Arizona), Larry James (Villanova), and Lee Evans (San Jose State). The U.S. team was clocked at 2:66.1. TQjviui icmy Vince Matthews crosses finish line with a time of 44.94 to win semi-finals in the Track and Field 400 meter event at the Olympic games in Munich. Close behind are Karl Honz (370) of Germany with 45.32, John Smith (101) of Los Angeles with 45.46, and Charles Asati (571) of Kenva with 45.47. We are a diverse fraternity, and yet we are united in our diversity. We all share the common goals of leadership, friendship, and service. We like to think service to the chapter comes after service to our fellow- man on campus, in the community, and in the nation. Friends, we invite you to join us in service to the cam- pus, community, and nation. No college education today is complete without engaging in service to mankind. Since 192.5 Alpha Phi Omega has been the one persis- tent service-oriented organization on college campuses. It is unique in being a true fraternity in fellowship, but one inclusive in membership, respecting each man ' s right to be proud of his race, his color, his religion, and his political preferment. Thomas Bland Vice-l ' re sident .Marcus Matthews Dean nt Pledgees If We Must Die Claude McKay If we must die, let it not be like hogs Hunted and penned in an inglorious spot, While round us bark the mad and hungry dogs. Making their muck at our accursed lot. If we must die, O let us nobly die. So that our precious blood may not be shed. In vain; then even the monsters we defy Shall be constrained to honor us through dead! O kinsmen! We must meet the common foe! Though far outnumbered let us show us brave. And for their thousand blows deal one death blow! What though before us lies the open grave? Like men we ' ll face the murderous, cowardly pack, Pressed to the wall, dying, but fighting back! SYMPATHY I know what the caged bird feels, alas. When the sin is bright on the upland slopes; When the wind stirs soft through the springing grass And the river flows like a stream of glass; When the first bird sings and the first bud opes. And the faint perfume from its chalice steals — I know what the caged bird feels! I know why the caged bird beats his wing Till its blood is red on the cruel bars; For he must fly back to his perch and cling When he fain would be on the bough a-swing; And a pain still throbs in the old, old scars And they pulse again with a keener sting — I know why he beats his wing! I know why the caged bird sings, ah me. When his wing is bruised and his bosom sore, When he beats his bars and would be free; It is not a carol of joy or glee. But a prayer that he sends from his heart ' s deep core, But a plea, that upward to Heaven he flings — I know why the caged bird sings! Paul Lawrence Dunbar The Black Finger Angelina W. Grimke I have just seen a beautiful thing Slim and still, Against a gold, gold sky, A straight cypress. Sensitive Exquisite, A black finger Pointing upwards. Why, beautiful, still finger are you black? And why are you pointing upwards? Life is Fine I went down to the river, I set down on the bank. I tried to think but couldn ' t, So I jumped in and sank. I came up once and hollered! I came up twice and cried! If that water hadn ' t a-been so cold I might ' ve sunk and died. But it was Cold in that water! It was cold! I took the elevator Sixteen floors above the ground. I thought about my baby And thought I would jump down. I stood there and I hollered! I stood there and I cried! If it hadn ' t a-been so high I might ' ve jumped and died. But it was High up there! It was high! So since I ' m still here livin ' , I guess I will live on. I could ' ve died for love — But for livin ' I was born. Though you may hear me holler. And you may see me cry — I ' ll be dogged, sweet baby. If you gonna see me die. Life is fine! Fine as wine!
