J csu A Growing Society Roland L. Draughon Editor-in-Chief Joyce Hicks Associate Editor Curtis Branch Managing Editor Mr. Mack Davidson Advisor FOREWORD Eleven hundred and sixteen days have we been a part of JCSU. There are many things to be remembered. We will remember Freshman Week. We will remember the stand up, sit dovra , and the Ghost . Our sophomore year seemed a blur. These were the days that quickened through with Dr. Powe ' s notebook , rewards of greekdom, and campus offices. These things we will remember. These memories will linger forever. The recently passed junior days and nights of hard work and study made us a little more aware, a little more adult. The endless research and study for exams, the numerous sunrises seen through the haze of a smoke-filled room - these thijigs we will remember. The coffee, the smoke, the weary eyes, all were a part of our stay with JC . Sloshing across campus to the dining hall, the solid smack of a snowball, the sandals and mini skirts, the bluejeans, moccasins, and sunglasses, block hours , canteenology, and the famous wonder meat - all these things we will remember. Novembers remembered and Homecomings past are events we will treasure. Homecomings begun with a coronation, a groggy dawn dance and shuffling feet to loud music in a crowded gymnasium, will never be forgotten. Friends, alumni, and scotch all blended to complete our total education. These memories, by their sheer numbers will fade, but the lasting friendships we have made will remain foreve r, as we leave JCSU - a growing society. The 1969 GOLDEN BULL has tried to present the complex pattern uf attitudes, values, and perceptions that compose today ' s Smithite. We have known Smith tor four years. We have been a part of the Centennial, and have witnessed the changes. In an effort to pay special tribute to old S.U., we chose to show our alma mater as a growing society. With the changes that have taken place, we wished to show you those things that are indicative of even greater things to come in this second century of service to the cause of higlier education. DEDICATION Vincent Edward Matthews Our Man in Mexico The class of 69 proudly dedicates this edition of the Golden Bull to Vince Matthews. This unassuming young man from Queens. New York, returned to JCSU from the World Summer Olympics held in Mexico City winner of a Gold Medal. This cinderman was the lead man on the United States team composed of Ron Freeman from the University or Arizona, Larry James from Villanova, and Lee Evans of San Jose State. The team smash- ed all existing records, as they were clocked at 2:56.1. The old world record was2;59.6. The Senior Class finds in Vince Matthews an identity long searched for. His achievement is a constant reminder of the challenge we all face as blacks. We are black, and we are proud; and with the same determination that our classmate has demonstrated, we shall succeed in future endeavors. Because of the challenge that Vincent Edward Matthews has given us, we proud- ly dedicate the 1969 BULL to lum. y lt ' ¥ 4 M- J cs u Extending the physical plant to provide space for us to continue our search for knowledge . . . ■i A GROWING SOCIETY Searching for truth Socializing . . Edwin Thompkins Dean, Theological Seminary and Professor of Historical Studies The responsibility of religion in any age is to help man find a solid sense of meaning, of direction, of destiny, as a human being. To meet this responsibility the Seminary accepts as its task the training of persons for a ministry at a time when the nature and functions of ministries are in flux in a rapidly changing world. The Seminary strives to enable its students to read the world in which people live and to prepare them to render a relevant, life-bearmg ministry. This necessitates patterns that guide toward mature self-direction and flexibility that readies persons for a variety of roles and experiences in fostering a Christian community and its mniistry. To everyone who reads these lines, the challenge is yours to enter a field of service that has many rewards in today ' s tense world. Edwin Thompkins r. Arthur H. STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION EXECUTIVE BOARD: Student Government Association. Left- Right. Calveneta Beasley. Geneva Spencer, Murdies Arnold. Bessie Meeks. Brenda Ferguson. To speak of student goveninicnt reform is to speak of campus reform. It is unwise if not impossible, to separate tlie two. For u student government is not an end in itself; it exists to lead and serve the students it represents. Our president, Murdies R. Arnold operates from this premise. He reflects the desires of students and moves in the light of our time. Jolmson C. Smith University students have been very in- volved in the issues shaking college campuses across the nation. The slogans Student Power and Black Power have had a particular significance for the S.G.A. 1968 69. Students took part in, and in some instances were the controlhiig force on many university committees: The Lyceum committee. Judical Court, University Council, to only name a few of the policy making bodies which students served on. Homecoming was one of the most successful ever-students shared in the total responsibility. Besides the traditional hand- ling of the coronation ceremonies students participated in every major committee and made a worth wliile contribution. A very strong emphasis of the student government was a concern witli a relevant curriculum; one that would provide the necessary skills to advance black people while also sensitizing us to our cultural heritage and instilling a sense of commitment to our people. Student Government 1968-69 had a very successful year. Murdies Arnold, as president extended the boundaries and powers, therefore establishing the supremacy of the S.G.A. He also was instrumental in furthering communciations between faculty, administration, and stall with students. Patricia Jones, Paula Mclntyre, Richard Jenkins, and Malcolm Singleton. S. G. A. Newsom assumed the role of cliief adminis- trator of Johnson C. Smith University on January 1. 1969. The student body attended the convoL-ation en masse to hear just what plans the eighth president of the University had to offer. This was a significant event because the students were con- cerned about the future of the University. Early in the semester an announcement was made that informed the students that Smith has a 2.5 million dollar deficit. Dr. Newsom gave an inspiring speech. With the symbolic sign of V for victory, every student present really felt that Johnson C. Smith Uni- versity was far from being e,xtinct. With Dr. Lionel H. We ' ve tried to get the BULL on a level that every student can understand and enjoy. One noteworthy change was the ehmination of excessive copy. You were here, you remember the dialogue, we felt not the need to repeat it. It has been our desire that each of you should find some thing or event that would bring a chuckle, a grin, or maybe a hearty laugh. There are errors! None of us are perfect. If your name has been misspelled, misplaced, misused, or unintentionally abused, we apologize. We tried to include every student, organization, and faculty member. We failed, of course, but we can only state our regret, and try to do better next time. Assistance we never get. Complaints, we always get. Students do not realize the headaches involved in producing an annual. To most students, the month of May means semester ' s end, and time for a yearbook. From whence it materializes is of small consequence. The Staff takes complaints in stride, and extends the sincere invitation to the dis-satisfied, Come join the Staff and lend us your skills. Mr. Mack Davidson, thanks for the vote of confidence you placed in me, with the assumption that I wouldn ' t fail to get the job done. Finally, to Delmar Studios, with whom we had our ups and downs, 1 thank for a beautiful job. Well, thanks again Staff and all.
