(Not pictured, Donald Fraz- ier, Treasurer) . We dedicate this page in memory of one who began this journey with us but, because of our Lord ' s will that he return to Him the giver of life, was unable to complete it. Tommie Lewis Reed, Jr. On our talent show he kept us all in wonder with his recitation of Go Down Death. Here in part is that poem. Weep not, weep not, She is not dead ; She ' s resting in the bosom of Jesus. Day before yesterday morning, God was looking down from his great, high heaven. Looking down on all his children. And his eyes fell on Sister Caroline, Tossing on her bed of pain. And God ' s big heart was touched with pity, With the everlasting pity. And God said : ' Go down. Death, to down. Go down to Savannah, Georgia, Down in Yamacraw, And find Sister Caroline. She ' s borne the burden and heat of the day. She ' s labored long in my vineyard, And she ' s tired — She ' s weary — Go down. Death, and bring her to me. ' And Jesus took his own hand and wiped away her tears, And he smoothed the furrows from her face. And the angels sang a little song. And Jesus rocked her in his arms. And kept a-saying: ' Take your rest. Take your rest, take your rest. ' Weep not — weep not. She is not dead ; She ' s resting in the bosom of Jesus. Homecoming is celebrated at Johnson C. Smith in the fullest extent of the word. This is the time of year when many alumni return to the dear alma mater for gala festivities. These activi- ties, in a sense, culminate the anticipation of the student body, alumni and friends for the greatest event of the fall semester. For almost an entire week there is fun and excitement for everyone. The coronation of the queen in all her regal splendor, musical concerts, the colorful parade, the excitement of the football game, and the Homecoming Dance are all part of the fun and frolic afforded by the festivities. In spite of appearances. Homecoming is not devoted exclusively to levity. There are serious moments as well. The gaiety of the festivities is climaxed when the entire body of instructors, stu- dents, alumni and friends congregate in the University Church to give thanks to God. MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE STUDENT GOVERNMENT As I write this message I can ' t help but think of the responsibility that is placed before college stu- dents today. The time today demands more knowledge in a well-rounded scope. This era demands the highest calibre of people with high ideals, goals, and hopeful achievements. If one is to be a useful citizen today he must be prepared in the stated areas. This I feel is the true worth of a college student. To the graduate, I truly hope you have accomplished some of these qualities, if not all. The world owes nor gives you anything, but you utilize your abilities to the highest in this new age, for there is much competition in the Market Place. To the undergraduate, strive on to the highest heights, for what is expected of the graduate today will not be expected of you. You see, times and demands change so constantly that you will be expected to achieve greater heights than the student before this. I wish each of you the greatest of success and abundance of life ' s joy. d e- u CHARLES H. C LAY WHITE. HI President of Student Government CHARLES H. CLAY WHITE, III The Student Government incorporates the educa- tional, social, and moral values of students and thus participates in the direction and coordination of stu- dent organizations and activities. It participates in the discipline of students and cooperates fully with the administration and faculty in upholding the high stand- ards of citizenship and scholarship by the University. This accounts for her effort to instill true school spirit in the heart of every member of the student body. Evidence of this is her diligent work with the cheer- ing squad. She has been a member of the squad since her freshman year. During her sophomore year she was chosen for the position of captain which she still main- tains. Aside from the cheering squad, she has participated in various other activities. Miss Gaines was voted as corresponding secretary of the Student Christian Asso- ciation, and is presently serving as Vice-President, and as President of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. During the year 1964 she was a member of the Freshman Reception Committee and participated in the exchange program with the University of Dubuque (Iowa). The same diligence which Rose Mary has shown in extra-curricular activities is exemplified in her class work as well. Since the time of her entrance at this institution she has maintained a scholastic average of of B. Because of her outstanding achievements members of the Bull Staff feel that this is but a small part of the recognition that is deserved by a person as dedicated as Miss Rose Mary Gaines. THEOADUS LA FA YETTE GUNN Mr. T. L. Gunn. our librarian, is also an alumnus of Smith. He earned his A.B. degree from the University in 1927. He also attended the School of Library Science, Hampton Institute, Hampton, Virginia, where he earned his B.S. degree in Library Science, 1930. Since 1930 he has served as head librarian here at Smith. Mr. Gunn has also done summer study at Columbia University, New York, New York. Mr. Gunn is a very active person, for he is affiliated with many organi- zations. Among these are the American Library Association and North Carolina Library Association. He is also a member and vice-president of the Board of Directors of Mecklenburg Investment Corporation, and a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Mr. Gunn is listed in NORTH CAROLINA LIVES and was a Tar Heel WHO ' S WHO for 1962. For recreation. Mr. Gunn enjoys music and the theatre. CHARLES CLA Y WHITE, II This young man whom you see scurrying around cam- pus, usually appropriately clad, with brief case in hand, is non other than Charles Henry Clay White, II. This young man is a person who looks constantly for ideas of change which enhance the particular sur- roundings and environment. This attitude has been portrayed in the many organizations in which he serves. Clay portrays a young man with something to offer in the following organizations: President of both the Student Government and Alpha Omicron Chapter of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity; member of the Young Democrats Club, National Association for the Advance- ment of Colored People, National Student Council Asso- ciations through out the country; he is also active in various community affairs and his hometown church, Ebenezer United Presbyterian Church. To give an additional sketch of the young man, it should be pointed out that he is not superhuman and enjoys a quiet family life, consisting of one brother and three sisters. An apt student majoring in political science, he finds adequate time for jazz listening, ex- tensive dormitory bull - sessions, dancing, and just plain old cupping as he often terms it. And to taper off these fine activities he is considered an accomplished trumpeter and pianist. Because of his effrots for the betterment of J.C.S.U., the Bull Staff hails the chief! WILLIE TROY SINGLETARY Singletary is one of the best liked and most cooperative students on campus. This year, while serving as Vice-President of the Student Govern- ment, he has worked hard on all of the organizational projects. Troy is known as the Campus Crier because of his willingness to make announcements in the Dining Hall and in chapel. He has proved to be a valuable worker in all areas of campus life. His extracurricular activities include: membership in the Psychology Club, The Ira Aldridge Dramatics Guild, and the Freshman Reception Committee. He is a junior from Lumberton, North Carolina, and a student of whom we can all be justly proud. Especially noteworthy is his willingness to work for an idea that the majority favors, even though he does not always favor it. His senior year should prove him to be one of the hardest working and most dynamic students in the University. 1 -«i ' Qo cfen Jiu ls l oo Saff GoacJiin Si off (l-Ki W :::,;!, I ' .Mi I ' ullough; defense coach, Charles R.
