It is with our deepest humility and greatest respect that we dedicate “The Bull” to “Dean Grimes”. May his nobleness inspire many more Smithites onward to attain success. Thus, Johnson C. Smith University is a place, an atmosphere and a tradition in Christian higher education. We want it to remain a place where the freedom to teach and the freedom to learn are carefully maintained. They are selected on the basis of an audition and character. In the audition the student is required to play several selections and sight-read unfamiliar music. The purpose of the organization is to give the student an insight into all forms of music — marches, concert, novelty and popular. In addition to three concerts during the past year, the band has per- formed at all football games and appeared in numerous parades. Through its participation in school functions the University Band encourages “Smith Spirit.” 1 12 THE Row 1: Avergail Hadley, Ruth Asgill, Mary Walker, Carol Chaney Elane Mebane, Myra Simpson, Lillian Hopkins, Ludie Matt, Nancs Evans, Gretel Thomas, Patricia Barr, Nancy Martin, Willie Mae Corry Rosa Bradley, Thelma Dent, Choquita White, Phelena Mebane. Under the auspicies of Christopher W. Kemp, the Johnson C. Smith University Choir is the regular church choir which is heard in the Uni- versity Church every Sunday morning at 11.00 o’clock on the campus. The Choir performs both a cappella and accompanied music, although emphasis is placed on a cappella choral literature. Church music is an important part of the choir because of its close association with the Church. However, secular compositions, spirituals and folksongs are rendered by the Choir. Gerado Stroud, a sophomore at the University, is accompanist for the Choir. 115 THE STUDENT COUNCIL President William Greene Members Anna Vernon Robert Moore Richard Brown Queen Roseboro George Goodman Barron Stroud Clarence Pritchett Shirley Williams Advisor Dr. Edwin Thompkins ; Lois Medford (Corresponding Secretary) L. to R. : Queen Roseborough (Vice-President) Judith Hawthorne (President) Mary White (Secretary) Charles Ivery (Treasurer) Bruce Strong (Commissioner on Cam- pus Affairs) Simon Jiboku (World Relations Commissioner) Barbara Ferguson (Assistant Secretary) S.C.A. Dr. A.O. Steele ( Heritage) 1 17 If you present your idea and it is useful, good, and has merit, many will join you in supporting it. And if, later, others should present their principles, many will join them, each according to his or her choice. So it goes on the campuses of many insti- tutions of higher learning. Many students each year, believing in certain principles and ideals, join with others of similar thinking and become members of various sororities and fraternities. Composed of thirteen representatives from each sorority and fraternity, it is primarily concerned with affairs that are of common interest to all Greeks. The presidency of the council rotates each year among the various organizations. Probably the ul- timate aim of the Pan-Hellenic Council is the establishment and per- petuation of the feeling of sisterhood and brotherhood towards all Greeks, regardless of individual affiliation. “Come one and all good fellow Greeks, Let’s all join hands and sing, Let’s raise our heads and standards high And let our voices ring.’’ |i i Lena Helton Deborah Anderson Marjorie Roddey Rosa Wells Dorothy Mitchell Eleanor Felder Virginia Lee Lydia Smalls Edna Jean Foust Cordelia Turner Ida Richmond Georgia Johnson Sadye Curry Willodene Wright Carol Janerette Arlease Abraham Shirley Vaughn Queen Grier Beverly Stuart Lizzie Simmons Lydia Aiken Clara Vinson — Basileus Lena Helton — Anti-Basileus Patricia Chambers — Anti-Grammateus Gwendolyn Borders — Epistoleus Judith Hawthorne — Hodegeus Lorraine Walker — Senteniel Dorothy Ellis — Tamiochus Lucille Goines — Dean of Pledgees Marian Johnson Vida Pruitt Geraldine Hankins Rosetta Jaudon Sally Graham Carolyn Robinson Sandra Patterson ROSTER OMEGA PSI PHI FRATERNITY r ot Pictured Officers Of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Bruce Strong George Johnson Charles Alexander George Goodman Carolina Hampton Theodore Strange Charles Alexander John Butler Talmadge Fair and Timothy Crawford Basileus Vice Basileus Keeper of Records and Seal Keeper of Finance Chaplain Parliamentarian . . . .
