Smith University choir is the regular church choir which is heard in the University Church every Sunday morning at 11:00 o ' clock on the campus. The membership of the choir is composed of students from all departments of the college. Most of the members have had little or no musical training before entering college. This has required intensive training on the part of the University to develop an acceptable concert group. The touring choir consists of approximately 34 persons chosen from a larger group of about seventy-five voices. The choir has been highly acclaimed in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, Ohio, New York, Illinois, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Arkansas and Missouri. It has appeared in several radio programs and is one of the choirs included in the United Negro College Fund ' s regular col- lege choir radio series Although the choir studies and performs both ccoppella and accompanied music, emphasis is placed on acappella choral literature. Because of the choir ' s close association with the church, an Important part of its repertoire is, of course, church music However, secular compositions, spirituals, folk- songs, solos, and selections by a male chorus will be heard. Accompanist for the choir is Gerodo Stroud, a freshman at the University. Christopher W Kemp, Director of the University Choir, is a graduate of Hampton Institute, Hampton, Virginia, and holds the Master of Music degree from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan. He has pursued additional graduate work at the University of Michigan, the East- man School of Music of the University of Rochester, Rochester, New York, and the Peter Wilhousky Classes in Choral Conducting, New York City, During the summer of 1953, Mr Kemp participated in o Music and Art Study Tour which carried him to the major music and art centers of Europe. During this time, he received a medal from UNESCO for serving as a par- ticipating conductor at the First International Conference on Music Edu- cation held at the Palais Des Beaux Arts, Brussels, Belgium.
