I - V 0 ( Nineteen Hundred Fifty-Seven SIXTEENTH EDITION JOHNSON C SMITH UNIVERSITY charlotte, North Carolina IE PITTMAN SAMUEL ALLEN editor JAMES STARKE bus. mgr. Qsst. editor ■id ■ v ■■■ This is the entrance to Johnson C. Smith University. The following pages will illustrate the life we live on campus, as seen by.your editor. Thank you, The Editor SAMMIE L. PITTMAN Our first interest at Johnson C. Smitl- is attending classes: A typical scene after - class session. DEDICATION The product of our efforts is complete. A great deal of work went into it, for we felt that this 1957 Bull must be worthy of the person to whom we dedicate it. We dedicate to him, who is one of our beloved professors; to him who stands as a silhouette of love end understanding, of truth and justice against a whitened world of malice and misunderstanding; to him who is much loved by every member of the student body for his guidance, for his attempt to share with us his profound philosophy of life. To you, Dr. Algernon Odell Steele, we dedicate this 1957 Bull. As we cherish this annual as the efforts of our task, we hope you will cherish it as a symbol of our conscious attempt to express our adoration for such a professor. Though we may never write a book, though we may never teach a class of religion, the memory of your having done so cannot be obliteroted from our minds. j„ m. emoPLam m JOHNSON C. SMITH UNIVERSITY CHARLOTTE 8, NORTH CAROLINA THE PRESIDENT ' S MESSAGE To Be Delivered At The Convocation Beginning The Ninetieth Session Of The Institution Dear Colleagues, Fellow Students and Friends: I extend to you Greetings and Best Wishes as you begin the Ninetieth Session of the work of the University. May this year exceed all others in worthy achievements. I congratulate you students upon your op- portunities for growth here. I commend to you a strong and dedicated faculty and staff, increasing facilities and a community of good- will. I congratulate the faculty and staff mem- bers on their opportunities found in an inquir- ing and eager student body. My prayer is that all we undertake to do will be worthy of God ' s blessings. May in all endeavors, whether individual or group, we strive to be first-class. Now a word about myself. The doctors ex- pect within a few days to have me on third base. With the strategy of the Coaches, and the skill of the Batter, they are hoping that I may score at home plate soon. I do have a good team and faith that God is on our side. With sincere concern and affection for each of you, I am Very sincerely yours, H. LISTON, President HL:oph September 19, 1956 ACTING PRESIDENT THE PRESIDENT ' S MESSAGE You students appearing in this edition of THE BULL, being the last to come under the stimu- lating influence of the late President Hardy Liston, should carry with you forever his ideals and philosophy. May you undertake your tasks with energy, engage in them with en- thusiasm, and strive unceasingly for excel- lence. DEAN OF MEN J. A. GRIMES DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC RELATIONS M. S. Roberson Mrs. Hardy Liston, Dr. Seabrook, Acting President Dr. Benjamin C. Roberson was the Foun- der ' s day speaker at the University on April 7, 1957. The program was dedicated to the memory of the late President Hardy Liston. Dr. Roberson was a classmate of Dr. Liston, having graduated from the University in 1911. As a student he was a star athlete in baseball, football and tennis. He was Chaplain of the old Fifteenth New York Regiment which be- came the famous 369th Regiment of World War I. He has served as pastor of Evans Metropolitan A. M. E. Zion Church, Fayette- ville, North Carolina. He also served as pastor in Paterson, New Jersey, before accepting his present assignment as pastor of Mother Zion A. M. E. in New York City. Since Dr. Liston died in office. Dr. J. W. Seabrook, acting president said: It seems fitting that instead of the festivities which would be appropriate for the 90th Anniver- sary of the founding of the University, the Founders Day this year should be a memorial to the late Dr. Liston who did so much for the university in the last nine years The Memorial Services were held at 4:00 o ' clock p.m., Sunday, April 7, 1957, at the University Church.
