A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT s I write this. 1 am still influenced b ' reflections incident to our Eiohtv-Sexenth Founder ' s Day observance. I wish to greet all 1953-54 Smith students, with s|iecial reetinas for the Class of 1954. To the latter, let me sav that this is an important ear for ' 0u. It is important, not onh ' because it is the vear of vour graduation, but also because 1954 is a most critical and determinati e ear in the histor ' of our times. It is a ' ear that has seen the per- fection of weapons of destruction that can wipe out ci ilization. It is a vear when the jieace of the world is being tested as ne er before, and a ear in which momentous decisions affecting vour and m citizenship are being shaped. Well might ■ou reflect u|X)n the significance of our coming to graduation at a time like this. I should like to leave with the senior class and all Smith students one t|uestion. How do we come to be HERE? The ans er to that question is that ou are HERE because somebody was THERE to help ou. You are HERE because, over the vears, others ha ' e been and are HERE in person or through their means. Mv hope is that, in the decades ahead, the Nouth of orn- land v ' ill sa - of nu that iiu were THERE with inspiration, information anti helpfulness as the - sought to meet the problems of their times.
