Our vrestlers did a very fine job, and ye're looking forward to next ear. Led by junior George Con- stance. the Wrestling Rebels par- ticipated in several dual meets early in the season. This provided experience for newcomers Shan- non Trahan. Dale Morris. Eric Tra- han. Troy Trahan, and Lance Blanchard. With such a small team, the Rebels were never able to finish in any commanding positions in the larger meets. Despite the inexperience of the team, several wrestlers made it to the state meet in Baton Rouge in February. Wrestling in the 98 pound class, eighth-grader Shan- non Trahan placed fourth. In the 132 pound division. Dale Morris, an eighth grader, also finished fourth. The only wrestler to pick up a medal was George Con- stance in the 138 pound division. With seven qualifiers that included two sen- iors, three sophomores, one fresh- men, and an eighth-grader, the tracksters scored 46 1 2 points, finishing behind Pleasant Hill with 56 1 2 points and Phoenix with 52 points Leading the Lady Rebels third place finish were Angie Trahan, Cherelle Duhon, and Stephanie Vining. In the discus, Angie finished second with a 102-7 toss. She came back to claim the shot put competition with a new state re- cord at 36-11 1 2. Cherelle ran a 17 .08 in the loo. Meter hurdles to claim second place while Stephanie leaped 4- 10 to finish second in the high jump. During the regular season and with the added help of eight more team members, the Lady Rebels faired well against their competition. Their only finish out of the top two came in the first meet of the year, the Lady Buck Relays. In this opener, their com- petitors were power teams from A to AAAA schools. Scott leaps a hurdle Rebels Win State Competing in every event but the 800. 1600. and 3200 meter runs, the Rebels were favored to win the title before they left home. Eight athletes went to the state meet, entered in 14 events, with pairs in four field events. Scoring in all 14 events, the Reb- els ran away with the Class C crown piling up 103 points. The Rebels' attack was led by Ricky Harrington. A defending state champion in the pole vault. Ricky bettered last year's record jump by six inches, with a 14-0 vault. Breaking the tape at 17.15 in the hurdles gave Ricky another first. Other first places came from Scott Sandifer and Dale Jinks. Scott hopped, skipped, and jumped 42-9 1 4 to win the triple jump. He also took third in the high jump and fourth in the shot. Dale hurled the javelin 150-4 for first and grabbed a third in the long jump. Seconds came from Nathan Delino in the pole vault and Kent Leger in the 400-Meter. An 11-6 vault secured the runner-up place for Nathan while Kent edged out Monticello's Freddie Thompson at the line for a sec- ond in the 400 Third places came from Scott Romero in the discus with a toss of 107-7 and Barry Badon in the 200 with a 23.62. Teachers Theresa Leon- ards and Carla Frey took over the reins as the school year opened. One of their main goals was to get more students in- volved in 4-H, even those who were not members. To start the year, the club held an action- packed week of activi- ties during 4-H Week. Stu- dents found the week re- warding, especially Clo- ver Day. Prizes were giv- en hourly to the person wearing the clover with the lucky number drawn. FHA Fund Raising With the future in mind, members started the year raising money for the district and state meets held at the end of the school year. Candy grams, usually sold in Feb- ruary for Valentine's Day, were sold at Christmas and on St. Patrick's Day. This continued to be a bonanza for the club. Kris Kringle Week was given a new twist, with teachers giving FHA members daily gifts. Members enjoyed small gifts that included home- made cookies and can- dies. Several changes in the annual beauty pageant, including a name change from Sweetheart Pag- eant to Starlight Pag- eant, proved to be disa- trous for the club. Due to an increase in entry fees, there was a lack of con- testants which resulted in ,r ™ iriionce Darticipa- tion. In March, members at- tended the district con- vention in Layfayette. After the convention, members shopped at the local mall. Baton Rouge was the site of the annual state meeting, where various meetings took place over a three-day period in April.
