36 Years IRENE TRAHAN Irene Trahan, head cook, has spent 23 years of those 36 cooking for the many school children and teachers who have attended Johnson Bayou High School. VELMA MERRITT Velma Merritt, records keeper and assistant cook, can account for 11 of those 36 years. EULA MAE GRIFFITH Eula Mae Griffith, baker and assistant cook, has served the delec- table goodies for the last 2 years. We, the JBHS REBEL Staff, Administrative Staff, Faculty, and Students take pride in dedicating our 1983 REBEL to these three wonderful ladies who have fed us so well during all these years. They, most times, work under very trying conditions — stoves that do not cook or bake, too small an area in which to work, broken air conditioners, clogged drains, noisy children, impatient faculty, short supplies, schedule interrup- tions — all of the things that make a kitchen and classroom a nightmare for mothers and teachers combine to plague these ladies. They are often called upon to prepare extra for sudden guests and for the Harvest Festival and athletic banquet each year. With some of the activities going on in our school, their domain looks like an International Airport, yet they all have patience with our demands and time to wait on us with every courtesy. Each of these ladies has a home and family to care for. They also work in the community, check in the store, cook for duck hunters, sew for others — if it has a name, they either have done it, can do it, are doing it, or will do it. The great thing about these ladies is that they often come to work with all the aches and pains that many of us complain of and stay home with. Yet, regardless of all their problems and pains and trials and troubles, they, in unison each morning, with a smile on their faces, give a cherry “Hello, honey” to each lady who walks thru their kitchen. The men get the same friendly hello. One would have to search far and wide to fine three nicer people with whom to work. So from all of us, we salute you and say, “Thanks, girls, you are indeed a joy to all of us. We do not want the “good, old days” when a cold biscuit and or syrup and bread was the lunch we carried to school. We want you.” 3

HOWARD ROMERO Principal PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Another year has come and gone, and as we look back, we all feel good about our successes. 1982 • 83 has been a good year for Johnson Bayou High School. There are many physical improvements on our campus which show the support we have from our community. The academic and athletic accomplishments can be contributed to our teachers, students, and coaches who have worked hard throughout this year. As we close the doors for the summer, we look back and are proud to be a part of Johnson Bayou history. To the seniors who are leaving, we will miss you. Use the knowledge we have given you to become successful in whatever endeavor you choose. We hope you will become a vital part of our community and continue the support for J. B. H. S. as your parents and friends have so willingly done in the past. 4
