PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE This was a very special year for the students, teachers, parents, and friends of Johnson Bayou High School. We accomplished one of the goals we had set for our school when we won the State Championship in track. Many schools have been in existence much longer than Johnson Bayou and have never won a state championship. The Johnson Bayou girls’ track team, under the guidance and leadership of Coach Danny Trahan, rose to the occasion, ac- cepted the challenge, and walked away with the Class C Girls’ State Track Meet held at Northeast State University in Monroe this year. They set the precedent for the rest of us by showing that with pride, determination, and confidence, anyone can win if his her desire is strong enough. We are just as proud of our students who represent us in our clubs — science, FBLA, FHA, 4-H, and others — who have competed with other schools, placed superior, and gone to state to represent us. We also owe a great debt to and are proud of our parents, friends, and community who support us in our money- raising endeavors, our school programs, our graduation exer- cises, and all other functions that we have. Thank you, Folks! We have many more such goals for our school both in academics and athletics, and we will continue to need your moral and economic support. The one point that I always like to emphasize to the students and teachers is that a person can do or be anything he she wants to be. The ingredients for a winner are these: a positive attitude, planned goals, hard work, and a tenacity for succeeding. With these thoughts in mind, let us look forward to crossing the next obstacles. With the Lord’s Will, I will stand beside you in the near future praising our winners in academics and collecting another State Championship for Johnson Bayou High School. Howard Romero Principal 3

DEDICATION We are honored to dedicate our 1982 REBEL yearbook to two former principals who spent their time and effort to mold Johnson Bayou High School into the school it is today. Dr. Joseph G. Sonnier was principal of Johnson Bayou High School from 1961-1969. Dr. Sonnier, we are proud to tell you that we discovered that you held the position of principal here the longest of any principal. What a record! Many of the people here and those who worked with you have a deep respect for you. You were the principal when our present principal, Howard Romero, was in grades 9 through 12. We know that you are responsible for much of his philosophy of life and his determination to do a good job in his profession. It is with these thoughts in mind, that we are honored to dedicate this book to you. (Dr. Sonnier is, at present, principal of Notre Dame High School in Crowley, LA). We are also honored to be able to dedicate the REBEL to Mr. Jerry McDonald, who was principal at Johnson Bayou from 1969-1976. Mr. McDonald, we know that under your leadership, Johnson Bayou prospered both academically and athletically and won many honors. You are also remembered and respected by many parents and teachers with whom you worked. (Mr. McDonald is currently the Guidance Counselor at Converse High School). Dr. Joseph G. Sonnier We wish you both to know that we are proud that you were here before us and laid the groundwork for us, for our beautifully remodeled school, for our achievements in academics and athletics, and for your dedication and constant efforts for a better education for our children. We wish you both a prosperous life and happiness in all that you do. We do thank you for making our school and community a better place. Howard Romero, Principal REBEL Sponsor and Staff Student, Teacher, Staff of JBHS Community of JBHS Jerry McDonald 2
