Dedication Miss Margaret Owen will always be remembered by the students and faculty of Johnson Bayou High because of her ready sense of humor, her willingness to join in fun, and her active interest in the stu- dents and their activities. Miss Owen has shown her respect and concern for students not only by spon- soring The Rebels four out of five years at Johnson Bayou High School, but also by her everyday deal- ings with students, and by her enthusiastic classroom teaching. Because she has become such a genuine part of Johnson Bayou High, we wish to dedicate the 1973 Rebel to Miss Margaret F. Owen. This poem, we think, expresses her philosophy. From The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran Then said a teacher. Speak to us of Teaching. And he said: No man can reveal to you aught but that which already lies half asleep in the dawning of your knowledge. The teacher who walks in the shadow of the temple, among his followers, gives not of his wisdom but rather of his faith and his lovingness. If he is indeed wise he does not bid you enter the house of his wisdom, but rather leads you to the threshold of your own mind ... And even as each one of you stands alone in God's knowl- edge, so must each one of you be alone in his knowledge of God and in his understanding of the earth.

Principal’s Message Every school within our nation has an imperative mission these days: to help prepare its students for life in a society composed of many different cultural and ethnic strands. The ex- tent to which the school equips its young people to work and to live within our country depends in large upon the type of instruction we have. We feel that the backbone of the academic part of our school is the faculty. They are the core - the heartbeat of any school system. Each teacher strives to prepare the individual student for life. I am reminded as I pass these thoughts to you of Thomas Huxley's quotation: Perhaps the most valuable result of all education is the ability to make yourself do the thing you have to do, when it ought to be done, whether you like it or not; it is the first lesson that ought to be learned; and however early a man's training begins, it is probably the last lesson that he learns thoroughly. It is my sincere wish that the pages of this annual have revealed some of the treasured moments of your many associations and activities while a student of Johnson Bayou High School. You should have a deeper understanding of the true character of your school and the many things it attempts to do for you as students. Sincerely, A O
