THE SKYHAWK, Volume II Chris Dixon, Editor RECORD OF 1979-80 SCHOOL YEAR Productd at JOHNSBURG HIGH SCHOOL 2002 West Ringwood Road McHenry, Illinois 60050 The 1979-80 Sky hawk Record The dictionary defines record as “ an account made in enduring form, especially writing, that preserves the knowledge or memory of events or facts.” The Skyhawk staff has assembled this “record” of the 1979-80 school year at Johnsburg High School in an effort to help you recall your “good old high school days” in the years to come. But no printed record can ever duplicate the sights and sounds of your friends and teachers as experienced through your own eyes and ears. The most we can hope for is to stimulate your memories, and that is the purpose of this album. 2 At Johnsburg High School . . . Some people study hard and other people hardly study. Some people are in advanced literature class, and others are not. 6 Some people nail and other people get nailed. Some people make passes and other people receive passes. Youth Characterizes JHS Golf Squad Most of the athletes on the 1979 golf squad were either freshmen or sophomores, and the lack of experience was certainly a contributing factor in finishing the season with an 0-13 record. Coach Rick Keber believes the experience gained by the underclassmen this year will be of tremendous value next season. Dooley Stanell, a sophomore, was select- ed Most Valuable Player, He was also named co-captain along with sophomore Tom Pieper. flHBi 49 Kevin Sowiak and Rich Kretzschmar walk toward the green at Chapel Hill Golf course. But three athletes were by far the most versatile sportsmen at Johns- burg High. Rick Szumlas demonstrated his talents on the gridiron, the basketball court, and the track. He accumulated many honors as he wore the blue and gold colors of his school, and his sportsmanship was exemplary. Kurt Valentin starred in football, basket- ball, and baseball. He was heavily recruited by several colleges and universities. His ath- letic skills were accented by his determined pursuit of excellence. Chris Dixon gave outstanding perfor- mances in football, basketball, and track. He was a leader and a “team player”. The col- lege recruiters sought Dixon for his strength, speed, and agility. He always gave his best effort. All three athletes were also honor stu- dents at JHS. 55 Chris Dixon maneuvers the basketball. Frank Jakubicek, one of Johnsburg’s most promising athletes, hits a layup. Rick Szumlas, a versatile star of three sports, scores on a short jump shot. Super-guard Brett Zimbrick nets two for the Sky hawks. Tom Schoenig, a senior crowd-pleaser, dem- onstrates the form that made him one of the top scorers of the season. 59 THE SOPHOMORE SKYHAWKS. Dan Nett, Tom Popovich, and Tom Pieper. Soph B-Ball According to Coach Dan Stanowski, the sophomore basketball team had a “could have, should have season.” They could have, and should have won more games. There was great individual improve- ment during the season and a lot of basketball excitement. The sophomores had three overtime games in a row at the end of the season. The squad compiled a 12-12 re- cord. Tom Pieper, the leading scor- er on the sophomore team, moves to the basket for an easy layup. 60 Russ Beck tries a jump shot from the free throw line. FRESHMAN BASKETBALL TEAM. First Row: Bill Nethaway, John Hendrixson, Jeff Fowler, Jay Jackson, Mark Hiller, Tom Huemann, Larry Zuley, Steve Poczkalski; Second Row: Keith White, Brian Olson, John Wharton, Dan Hovseth, Chris Wegner, Paul Metzger, Steve Kalsch, Dan Gallagher, Kerry Ridout, Mike Hurches, and Coach Roger Ludwig. Freshman B-Ball The freshmen basketball players repre- sent the future of the Skyhawk basketball program. The emphasis is on basics at the freshman level, and victories are not as important as building skills and learning the fundamentals. The freshman “A” team finished the season with 6-11 re- cord, and the freshman “B” team fin- ished with a 3-3 record. John Hendrixson takes a jump shot. Jeff Fowler moves down the baseline.
