COMMANDING OFFICER USS JOHN YOUNG (DD-973) 29 March 1980 Dear Crewmembers and Shipmates, This yearbook presents a pictorial history of the first eighteen months of JOHN YOUNG ' S commissioned life. These months have seen us take an inanimate metal structure and bring it to life. Through our hard w ork, perseverance and willingness to face the unknown, we have provided this ship with an identity of its own. This ship is usi We should look at this accomplishment with a great deal of pride. Besides the sophisticated technology we had to master, we also had to learn to function as individuals within a sea-going organization. Since more than sixty-five percent of us had never been to sea, this in itself was significant and proved to be quite a challenge. Nevertheless, three transits through the Panama Canal, SWEET MAMA, one crossing of the Equator, visits to Rodman, Acapuico, Monterey and Seattle, a training Readiness Evaluation, Refresher Training, Final Contract Trials, a Dependent ' s Cruise and a six-month Long Beach overhaul period proved just how successful we had been. For me this has been one of the most rewarding times of my life as I watched you develop along with the ship. Initially, we addressed her formally as JOHN YOUNGj then as we became tentatively more familiar with her we refereed to the ship as The SPRUANCE WITH CLASS . Finally, confident in our abilities, she became Big John as we became salty old sea-dogs. If you look closely at the pictures that follow, I think you ' ll see what I mean. It has been an honor to be with you as your Commanding Officer. I ' ve never been associated with a crew like you and would like to thank you for your contributions to our success. Well done. Warm Regards, D. K. MENIKEIM r .JL
