hz 477421 Fiufus Creekmore rolls out to pass against James Monroe. The ten regular season games of the John Yeates football season were real crowd pleasers. First we played Northampton on the Eastern Shore. The Chargers team proved to be too much for the Yellow Jackets and Yeates won 49 to 14. The following week the Chargers returned to their home field to play the school rival, Suffolk. After some anxious moments Yeates prevailed 14 to 6. The next victim to fall before the Maroon Machine was Smithfield. The Chargers were in control the whole game and shut out the Packers 28 to 0. Gloucester was the next Charger victim. Yeates took no mercy as they trounced the Dukes 40 to 6. The next week Yeates almost fell victim to an improved Southhampton team. The Chargers managed to pull through in the end and defeat the Indians, 14 to 6. Yeates' next foe was a highly regarded Franklin team that had rolled up 160 points in their last three outings. The Chargers proved to be too quick for the Broncos and won the game 21 to 0. Yeates won their very first District Championship in any sport as they defeated the Central Tigers 48 to 6. The following week the Chargers played an undefeated Group A team, New Kent. Yeates outclassed the Trojans and defeated them 35 to 14. Yeates' last two games were between two rivals who had barely beaten the Chargers the previous year. The Maroon Machine mopped up a 23 to 0 victory over the Dukes from Windsor, avenging the 6 to 2 loss they suffered the year before. Yeates was out to seek revenge against their cross-county rival, Forest Glen, who had beaten the Chargers the previous year in a game of seconds, 8 to 7. Yeates won the game handily 42 to 14 which rounded out an undefeated season for the Chargers of John Yeates. The Chargers then began their march to the championship games. We played Matoaca for the Region l title on the Franklin field. The Peanut District Champions trounced the Southside Champions by a score of 42 to 14. Thus proving Yeates as a football power. Yeates, now the Region l Champions, traveled to Fredricksburg to face James Monroe in the semifinals of the state laurels. Trailing 6 to 0 at the half, Yeates came back in the third quarter with their usual ball control game, but failed to score. Time was the Chargers' enemy and with 7:32 remaining in the game Yeates turned the ball over to James Monroe, who scored with 6:43 remaining in the game. Monroe scored once more in the final seconds to beat the Chargers 21 to 0, but the Chargers will be back next year. gamma... We oflie Qeafr, Sammy Mills picks up good yardage against Matoaca. 1
