MEMORIAM MAJOR JOSEPH W. BLIRKETT Q5., ' As Tarleton grows and fulfills its aims as an institution of higher learning, so it con- tributes much to the society to which it belongs. The lives of the people who have been a part of Tarleton have all become a part of the success of their country in some way. The citizen, the teacher, the military man--these are typical of the people of Tarleton. Major Joseph W. Burkett was a living tribute to Tarleton. He lost his life in a Viet Cong ambush July 13, 1964 in Viet Nam. A top-rate citizen, Major Burkett set a fine example for the young men he instructed as associate professor of military science. His many medals and decorations represent an outstanding military career and a life of serv- ice for his fellow man. The memorial fund set up in Major Burkett's honor is only a small, simple tribute to a man of Tarleton.
