BLIRKETT Q5., ' As Tarleton grows and fulfills its aims as an institution of higher learning, so it con- tributes much to the society to which it belongs. The lives of the people who have been a part of Tarleton have all become a part of the success of their country in some way. The citizen, the teacher, the military man--these are typical of the people of Tarleton. Major Joseph W. Burkett was a living tribute to Tarleton. He lost his life in a Viet Cong ambush July 13, 1964 in Viet Nam. A top-rate citizen, Major Burkett set a fine example for the young men he instructed as associate professor of military science. His many medals and decorations represent an outstanding military career and a life of serv- ice for his fellow man. The memorial fund set up in Major Burkett's honor is only a small, simple tribute to a man of Tarleton. Whether it was the social events, class-room experiences, or the traditional happenings on campus-all have pleasant and unforgetable moments. This is the spirit of Tarleton. The enthusiasm and devotion which the student body and administration has shown in every aspect of the life at Tarleton is depicted in GRASSBURR '65 as a salute to them as the spirit of Tarletonf' v f W. W2 , , y 12. W ' YW H ,gn The religious centers have always been active. This year they did such things as promote Religious Emphasis Week, give parties for the children of the Foster home, present speakers on topics of interest, participate in homecoming, and sponsor hootenannies. An asset to Tarleton is its band. Their high-stepping majorettes and snappy routines with the many programs of music which they present add much to the prestige of Tarleton. The beautiful new Student Center offers to all a place to go to have their morning coffee, to socialize among their colleagues, or to sit around and talk over the world's problems. Tarleton has brought to its campus many foreign students who are always eager to share the customs and ideas of their countries whenever given a chance. The name Tar1eton Texans is known throughout the state as the athletic teams of Tarleton State College. The efforts of all these groups well represent the strong devotion to the spirit of Tarleton. . 451 nwih ,,.,,,. .A ,, - '-,-:.r'fffts:v. - - .A ,M 7 wrfnx,w..swussaw, wan.-1. fb? .f ,IW The pleasant atmosphere of Ta.rleton's campus gives stu- dentsian opportunity to study together in the quiet of the library, laboratory, or the meznnine of the girls' The Student Center offers many different activities for the students in their off pe- riods of the day as well as their spare time at night.
