Although the score at the end of the game was 20 to O, Tarleton played a good game. The Plowboys defeated the Cameron Aqqtes of Lawton, Oklahoma, 14 to 8 on Hays Field. Matthews, Tinker, Holcomb, and Graves played well for the Plowe boys. The Plowboys downed the fighting T. M. C. Bulldogs 11 to 7 in C: hard fought game on Hays Field. The Bull- dogs scored in the first quarter, mak- ing the score 7 to O. The Plowboys re- ceived c1 safety in the second quarter. In the second half Tarleton had the ball on the T. M. Matthews dropped back to pass and heaved one to Parks who caught the ball on the 10 and ran across. The strong T. W. C. Rams of Fort Worth defeated the Plowboys on Hays Field, 13 to 7. These boxers had no coach to show them the many tricks of boxing. They worked hard and provided physical develop- ment for themselves, and put on exhibi- tion bouts. In those days Dean Davis had to Chop a path through the stick- ers from his home to the main building. . . . As its history was started, the history of Tarleton will go on amid the Grassburrs. In 1911-1912 Tar1eton students decided to publish an annual, and a contest was held to choose a name for it. Roy Mefford, then a student and now an instructor in our Agricultural Depart- ment, submitted the name Grassbur, and this name was chosen. Two years 1ater, in 1915 the first Tar1eton annua1 was pub- lished, arid the editors of it must have prophesied its growth in the future for they added another r to the bur . The first record of an annua1 is that of the one of 1916, which had a black suede cloth cover and five pages of seniors. In 1920-1921 the Grassburr was almost twice as large as its previ- ous issue and contained pictures of the administration building, the Dean's and Registrar's homes, and the girls' dormitory. Through the years 1922-1938 many improvements have been made on the Tarleton annual, and its size and popularity have grown amazingly. This issue contains the pictures of 284 seniors, 432 juniors, and 12 underclassmen, and numerous sections, in- cluding the favorite, the athletic, the literarypthe feature, and the faculty sections. Students of the agricu1tura1 department will te11 you that grassburrs are valueless arid bothersome, but this Grassburr is one of most the student's prized possessionsia book that wi11 carry the customs, traditions, and memories of John Tarleton through the age. The coeds must wear the cham- brays from seven in the morning until three in the afternoon. A black tie, black regulation oxfords, and dark hose are the acces- sories to be worn with them. These uniforms are very tailored and neat, and from a distance a group of girls in their blue uni- forms make a very pretty picture. For special occasions tsuch as the first football game in my caset a white pique uniform, made by the same pattern as the Chambray, is worn with the same accessories as the chambray. It is a very pleasant thought to know what you are going to put on every morning when you awake. There is always a fresh, crisp uniform to be easily slipped into. There is no worrying over the fact that the girl sitting next you has on a prettier dress than yours I think that it is a very good idea for girl students to wear uniforms, both for economy and appearance. At the same time, I have an irritated neck to remind me that starched collars are not so very comfortable, and I have a dress in my room that I longed to wear this morning. The recreational program is a necessary part of the college curricula. Tarleton, realizing that All work and no play makes John a dull boy , offers a program of diversified entertainment. Today athletics plays an important part in the life of all college students. At some time or other every teacher and student at- tends some of the athletic Contests. Tarleton students, like the rest of the young people of the United States, are iootball-minded; and the majority receive the largest part of their recreation from football games. It is no wonder, however, because no other sport offers the thrills and trying moments that football produces; and no other sport so helps the students to take their minds from their studies and worries; and this is the main purpose of recreation. The Tarleton band, composed of about fifty cadets, adds to the glamor of the games; and all the students, under the direction of four cheer leaders, make up the cheering section. Pep rallies are, in every sense, a student activity. Before each game a group of enthusiastic boys and girls under the guidance of the cheer leaders meet to show their appreciation of the team and to pro mote the school spirit. An analogous activity to the pep rallies is the Shirtwtail parade following a victorious game of Tarleton College. A group of cheering students with their shirt-tails out follow the band through the streets, informing the world in a very informal way that Tarletori was victorious. The Plowboys, as the athletes of the school are called, are especially outstanding in basketball; for they have been undefeated for the last three years and have a victorious season this year. A good, hard-iought basketball game gives its spectators many thrills and much en- joyment. Tennis also affords much recreation tor those who like to play the game. While basketball and football only give the majority of the students a chance to watch the game, tennis pro- vides an opportunity for everyone to engage in the sport. There fore, tennis is important in any college recreational program. There are other sports, such as boxing, track, and wrestling; but basketball, football! and tennis are the three major sports in Tarleton. lContinuedl Mr Tim mum! Outfittmls The Fine Arts Department offers good programs for those that enjoy music, oratoriccxl work, and performance of plays. The iyceum numbers are under the direction of or connected with this department of the school. In past years there have been mcmy noted men and women who have spoken to the students and faculty. Among this group of entzrtctiners are Richard Hallie burton, noveiist; Francis Perkins, Secretary of Labor; and Send- tor La Follette of Wisconsin. The college has its own symphony orchestra band, and Chorus, which add to the programs. Dean Davis is in charge of the daily chapels, and his talks are benee ticictl and interesting. Students and faculty members are often called on to mctke displays of their individual talents. Somewhat along the sctme line of interest is reading There is nothing much more delightful, more restful, and more entertaining than a good book. The Tarleton library, which cmtctins thousands of books, magazines, Grid newspapers, otters students this opportunity. In the library's comfortable atmosphere many Tarletonites spend their spare time. The students of Tarleton edit the I-TAC, the school paper, and the GRASSBURR, the school annual. These publications delineate school lite on the campus. Student organizations are of great importance Cit Tarieton. There is the Students Council, which has as its purpose the pro- motion of closer relationship between students and between students and facuity members. The T. T S's for girls, and the T. T. P's for boys are organizations for the purpose of encour- aging the proper school spirit. The social clubs on the campus are the O. W. L. 8., I. A. P's, S. Q 8., Les Lunettes, Tejots, Silver Key, Taions, Sons of Tarieton Society, Dragons and the Lucky Thirteen. Other organizations are the De Moiay, Officers' Club, Engineer's Club, Comanche County Club, Press Club, and the Tarleton Chapter of Future Farmers of America. These organi- zations carry on Ct large part of the social activities of the college by giving dances, picnics, and parties. The Recreational Hctli, where most club entertainments are held, is the favorite gather- inq place of students. Here boys and girls study, play cards, or talk with their friends. Most college dances are held in the gym- nasium and are chaperoned by faculty members. The college orchestra furnishes the music.
