Text from Pages 1 - 194 of the 1936 volume:

N carrying out the architectural theme in this 1936 Iedition 0f the Grassburr, we have attempted to portray the advance and development of architecture by pre- senting various stages in its progress. Each generation or nation adds its bit to the architecture ofits time and adds its influence upon the architecture of the future. Every period of architecture has had the successes and the fail- ures of the preceding periods with which to work. One might compare the development of a great style of architecture to the development ofa student attending school. The student must begin at the bottom and pro- gress upwarderetaining that which is worthwhile. dis- carding that which is uninteresting and unsatisfactory. It is the sincere hope of the staff that we have presented a worthwhile and educational theme for your approval or disapproval. We have tried also to make this book as representative of campus, classroom. athletic, and social life in Tarleton as we possibly could. We hope that you are pleased with the book, and if you enjoy reading and keeping it one-fourth as much as we have enjoyed making it. then our labors shall not have been without fitting reward. style ing ra y have Hm ' Pmun'n'li man-s first Ihiug abom- Ivd ul' rants and tents. FOOTBALL Tarleton opened the .35 season with Co-Captains Bill Gay Kennerly and Henry Todd leading their Plowhoy gridsters against the strong Westmoorland Indians from San Antonio. Although the Plowboys had been working out for only two weeks, they showed much early season power by defeating Wreslmoor- land 24 t0 0. The Plowboys had an easy time defeating the Clifton College Wyildcats, 19 to 0, on a muddy field in Clifton. The starting J.T.A.C. line-up consisted of several second and third string men. Graves and Gray turned in good games for the Plowboys. Tarleton next journeyed to Brownwood to play the strong Daniel Baker eleven. The feature of the game was the hard fighting 0f the two powerful lines. Neither eleven could score until the closing minutes of the, final period when Atkins, brainy Plowboy quarter, called for a place kick on the 30-yard line. Funderburk converted with a beautiful kick going squarely between the up- rights to give the Plowboys a hard fought 3-0 victory. Howard, Crane, and Conger starred for the Hill Billies, and Atkins. Atkins, Panne , and Collins were outstanding for Tarleton. Scoring almost at will, the Plowboys smothered the Hillsboro Redskins 40 t0 0 in the first afternoon game of the '35 season, played on Hays field. Allen, Graves, and Funderburk performed well for the Plowboys. In a fog-Swept field, after being scored on for the first time of the season, the Plowhoys eked out a 7 t0 6 Victory over the strong senior college eleven 0f the T.W.C. Rams in the closing minutes of the game. Isbel and Bray led the Rams in a battle which outshone the Plowboys. Outstanding for Tarleton was the hullet-passing combination of Co-Captain Kennerly to Gray. Funderhurk converted with a beautiful place kick to give the Plowhoys a one-point margin. In this game Atkins, brilliant field general of the Piowboy eleven, received a sprained ligament which kept him out of a Plowboy uniform until the closing minutes of the last game of the season. The hustling line-plunging 0f Funderburk competed with the great Iine-backing of Eli Rushing for honors for the Plowhoys. The Plowboys downed the fighting T.M.C. Bulldogs 14-0 in a hard fought night game played on Hays Field. The brilliant Kennerly-lo-Gray passhlg combination tallied twice for the Plowboys. The entire line played a great de- fensive game. Rushing was the outstanding Plowhoy with the interception of six passes. The reserves got a Chance to show their strength against a weak team from Ranger Junior College. The Ranger eleven was swamped by the top-heavy score of 92 t0 0. Joe Little and Matthews turned in good games for Tarleton. 0n Turkey-Day the undefeated Plowhoys journeyed to Arlington to play the N.T.A.C. Hornets for the conference title. Walking through these halls. I am never certain about which keyholes to tn. However. by an unusual process of elimination. I dis- cover those which will he of most inter- est. First I look through Marian Mats' keyhole and see her sitting at her table poring over a book so that she ma-x not have to let her studting interfere with her tlailt S. Ling with Peyton Weaver. Smart girl. tlonit 'xou think? We should all learn to budget our time. Now I walk over to Klickey Sporeris hall confused more than ever because I see so many of those useful. rule little things called kevx - holes. I just can't resist the temptation to pause in front of Peggy Ellisl door. stoop in the usual way, and indulge in my favorite pastime-keyholing. As I view the sight afforded me there, I hear her say to her roommate, Oh Louise. I've got another secret love; heis tall and rather dark. but that's all Igm gonna tell you about himmause Itou might tell him. I don't want him to know about it. Through the keyhole next door. that belonging to VIelba and Nora Bell, can be seen nothing except furniture because the occupants of the room are down in the parlor tossing a coin to see which one gets to call the boy friend first; that is, if Nancy does not beat them to it. Sometimes Sausing is the number one man. anll then sometimes it ' Big Friou: but most often it's Britt. Finding noth- ing here. I move on in search of the wist- ful sigh that I hear on the hall below. of course the wistful one is Dixie Hendrit. artlenth gazing at one of .Iudeis pie- tures. Ah, this spring weather! Now I decide that it would be best for me to come hack to the first hall and try my luck there again. I stop before a door and peep upon Ora 13.. Nan. Nadine. and Margaret Utley eating. and . . . well. you guess the rest. After all. I decide that the keyhole is good for nothing except to stuff with macaroni or dough- nuts: so I just take it with me. Presently I tire of the Dump km holes and hunt for larger ones. the strain on my e-xes being the sole reason. Little caring where I go. I suddenly find my self ronfronted by a very big keyhole. Ah! surely Iill find something here! Get- ting adjusted comfortably before it, I see none other than The Gentleman furiously preparing his dirt column for the following week, and hear an occasion- al triumphant chuckle. Searcely does he realize that he is being whipped at his own game and being spied upon when . oh, oh, I would have to fall. hit the rloor knob, and as a result. feel some- thing wet on my eye. Itis all right though; only a little printerls ink thrown through the keyhole. Not that The Gentleman was angry at being discovered or any- thing like that. but anyway, students wondered why I wore a patch over my eye for a few days. Well. it wasn't alto- gether my fault; he shouldnit have such a tempting keyhole, anyway. HMARY E.
