THE Chg: hr, GRASSBURR, 1934 PUBLISHED BY STUDENTS OF JOHN TARLETON AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS 30571 FOREWORD We have tried herein to record happenings and events of the year to preserve in the minds of Tarleton students a memory of the glamorous year 1933-34, the year in which the Recovery Administration held full sway not only within the nation but in our school as well. In keeping with this idea, we have selected the Recovery theme fortheannual. I i0 i3 ,0 3, b h ,r 33 h n $ aggzlg Mandelf' DEDICATION To Franklin D. Roosevelt, 21 natural leader on whom the nation has placed the responsibility of readjusting the governmental and financial condition of these our United States, the instigator 0f the administration from Which we have chosen the theme for this annual, and DEDICATION To Lieutenant George M. Davis who through his ability as a leader has done much toward the betterment of our school, who will remain in the memories of every Tarleton cadet as one of the best of instructors and the finest of men, we dedicate with deepest sincerity and respect this 1934 Edition of the GRASSBURR. Photography by BAXLEY STUDIO 8L NOVELTY STUDIO Priming by THE CLEGG COMPANY San Antonio. Texas Engraving by SOUTHWESTERN ENGRAVING CO. Fort Worth, Texas THE SCHOOL FACULTY Evil days have come upon us. In the United States, as well as all other parts of Liie civilized world, social, economic, and political institutions are breaking down as a result of the inadequacy of leadership 01' because of the lack of character upon the part of the leaders. The conclusion is inescapable that one or the other, or both of those factors in combination, are responsible for the sorry plight 1n which we find ourselves. The tasks, therefore, that will 1est upon the citizens of tomorrow are doubly arduous. Those who make a real contiibution to the solution of the problems of civilized man must have mental training, physical development and moral st'1min11 with the courage to meet whatever demands may be laid upont em who are in college now perhaps have an zidva'ntage over those who have gone beforeo or those who may come after you You are seeing the close of an old order and the beginning of a new. You umay dlaw upon the experiences of the past for guidance in performing the tasks of the future. But if you are to do Vour wmk in full measure you must prepare in advance for the duties and responsibilities from which you cannot escape, and which, if efficiently d1acha1ged will enable you to contribute a large measure of service to the welfare of your fellowmen. Teh Board of Directors of your institution togethei with its faculty, are doing all within their power to plovide facilities that will enable you to make satisfactory advancement and to achieve the goals of your ambitions. We pledge you our continued best efforts and urge you to take a full measure of advantage of every opportunity for personal improvementi President In 1917 we faced a crisis. We saw it, recognized it, met it, and conquered as victors 111 the great wolld of strife. In 1919 we faced another crisis which spread itself over 11 111mrm't period of time. We did not see it. We failed to recognize it We went down in deD tChmchill King, President of Oberlin College,w111'ned the American ,people mlluwing the great W111, saying: uM01111 defeat often follows military vic cto1y I have had a feeling that the youth of Amalica in any age and generation would meet a cl'i Q and conquer, if they were warned sufficiently 11nd lecognized the c1isis. I think we have failed misembly in the la:t twelve years, due to the fact that we i'vt'used In see and refusal m recognize 0111' task and our responsibility. reat encouragement, however, come to me today in the fact that the youth in the colleges of the nation 1119 becoming Sober, selious and dete1'mined.Let us hope that 11 new day not of 1L'Vell'y but of service, s11ne 1111i! conservative living, is coming to us in Ammica, due to the steadyim: effect of 11 iising youth with dete1mined effort.
