CLASS HISTORY At the beginning of the school year we were just recruits from many different training camps, assembled here at J. T. A. C. Camp to begin actual lighting. We soon found that we would have to meet our enemies many times, including three skirmishes a week with Calculus. three maneuvers around Science, and several battles With English. It is true that we stopped many times during the year to receive first aid, but we will raise the flag of victory at the end of the year. Old Rose MOTTO, Never Unprepared CLASS POEM The Juniors came from far and near, To learn the lore of ages. By studing books which wiser folks, Have failed with printed pages. With eager minds these students sought. To enlarge their stores of knowledge, And gladly hailed each class room task, As they went up to college. They chattered over stony ways, In little sharps and trebles, And looked for golden grains of truth. But gathered far more pebbles. They Hitted about. and in and out, And never dreamed of failing, With now and then a joyful shout, Which forecast no bewailing. Elusive thots, with gleam and glance, Like dainty, skimming swallows, And bright as netted sunbeams dance, Glinted thru dark, mental shallows. They led chase in dusk and dew, Thru tangled wilderness. They paused within the Juniorst view. But escaped their fond caresses, So on and on for many days, In good and in bad weather, These youthful pilgrims journeyed far, On wisdomts road together. MOTTO, Do the right. with all your might. COLORS. Blue and White. After tirst thought of going to college, many students have a horrible thought of being in the Freshman class, but this is the happiest year of college life, which is the first step toward the more advanced class-the Sophomore year-and this is the ciass that has made a struggle for existence this year.' At the beginning of this year the thought of being in the Sophomore Class inspired the thoughts of many boys and girls. As the class was brought together, it was found that there were only seventeen who survived the hardships of the one round in the ladder of success. It was suggested that the HSophs organize and elect a president and secretary, as this would bring the class into a union of greater strength than would otherwise be had. The cup was passed With the white and black beans in it, and out of the drawing it was found that Henry Lee Purvis had drawn the bean intended for the president of the class, and Miss Stella Renfro the bean in- tended for the secretary, and Mr. Conrad Lanning the vice president's bean. This is an experience that is long to be remembered by the few faith- ful Sophomores as they journey thru college, and into the world to bless the world, and to inspire more boys and girls to grasp the opportunities that are af- forded them by which they are to brighten the daily walks of all who come in contact with them. 34 r3? Gordon Literary Society was organ- ized at the beginning of the school year, 1915. At that time the student body was divided into two sec- tions for the purpose of organizing themselvesinto literary societies. We, the Gordons, took as our motto, HBy In- dustry We Succeed. Without a doubt we have proved the truth of these words by the contests with the opposing society, in which we have always been victors. At the beginning of this year, on account of the changed schedule, it was necessary to follow some other plan of organization. The XV. K. G's. were divided into three bodies; the Music Club, the Debat- ing Club, and the Current Event Club. Under the supervision of the school. and direc- tion of the officers of the clubs, these clubs are hold- ing up the same flag that we once held as a single unit. 42 JOHN TARLETON COLLEGE VOL.III ll 43 JOHN TARLETON COLLEGE VOL.IIIjI F. S. White Society HISTORY. The F. S. White Society was organized at the be- ginning of the 1915-16 sesson, with about forty ac- tive members. By the end of the term with an ex- cellent enrollment of sixty-six, and closed the season with ninety-nine members. The Society began her third year with a banquet and ngt acquainted meeting? and enrolled one hundred and twentyeiive members. Owing to the new schedule no period could be had that was convenient for society work. The soci- ety was then divided into three clubs, the Music Club, the Current Event Club, and the Debating Club. These clubs too have inherited the same spirit of their predecessors, unconsciously surpassing all of their contemporaties. She has ever lived up to her motto. HLabor Con- quers Allf' The democratic spirit that prevails a- mong our members has been directly responsible for her unparalled growth and usefulness. FULL BACK If the Grassburr were going into the hands of Tarleton students only, it would be useless to introduce this player, because they would say, UThatis Red. But for the benefit of others we will say, HMr. Frank Hudspethf His continuous long punts, terrific line plunging and excel- lent defensive work were greatly appreciated by all. He will be with us next year. AMMON TURNBOW GUARD HSon has made Tarleton a valuable man for the past four years. His worth was much appreciated this season. He filled his old place on guard with the same Hpep and fight as usual. He played a hard game, and when called on to Uopen up you could always look for U3 hole? VERNON ADAMS TACKLE uBunt played the first game of foot ball he ever saw. but was a veteran in grit, spirit and pep. He was in every game and never did he call for time. The size of his opponent never bothered him. He had but one object in a game; to do his part. and he did it and more. 68 W JOHN TARLETON COLLEGE VOL.IMI RAYMOND FERGUSON CAPTAIN AND HALFHACK Fergie has been one of the strongest men on the team for the past three years. All his opponents know him. especially if they have come in contact with him on the field. XVhen he hits a man the officials generally call time out for him. He is excellent on breaking up forward passes, and we hope to have him with us another year. LEROY ROQUEMORE CENTER Roquemore came back strong this season. He knows all the tricks of the team, and goes thru the enemyts line at will. He has the record of not a bad pass throughout the season. and he has lots of ginger and plays hard all of the time. The team will lose a valuable man by his graduation. JACK MILLER TACKLE Jack came out this year with a spirit of fight and determination to have a place on the team. He won it and was showing skill in tackling and in managing to break thru the enemy's lines when he was disabled the last of the season on account of a fractured ankle. We are banking on him for next year. 69 W JOHN TARLETON COLLEGE VOL.III ll JOHNNIE HARRISON END Johnnie came to us this year from Britten Training School. He isn't a big man but has lots of iisand and likes to play the game. He tackles hard. After one of his tackles one of the Howard Payne mammoth back- field men looked down up on this little hero and said with a smile, USay, sonny, you ain't trying to hurt me are you? CONARD LANNING QUARTER-BACK Couard is one of the best generals Tarleton has ever had. He was cool at all stages of the game, and his head-work netted us many games. i'Doc is noted for his fast handling of the team. and his pep is conta- gious. His work in the Meridian and Simmons games will long be remem- bered. FRED CHANDLER END HEcod came back this year with a grim determination, which we all admired, and easi!y secured a place on the team. It is almost an unknown thing to the team for our opponents to make a gain around right end, and a pass seldom got by HEcod. We always depended on him and were never disappointed. 70 JOHN TARLETON COLLEGE VOL.III T. V. MONTGOMERY HALF BACK, CAPTAIN'ELECT iiMomy made his debut with us this year, coming from Demon.
