Hoggard’s Naval Junior ROTC program has had a new touch this year—the addition of girls participating in the various activities. Although the uniforms did not arrive until late, the girls drilled and learned the fundamentals of being a cadet. John McNeill was named cadet commander for 1972-73. Many new faces joined the unit this year including a new commander, LCDR John P. Blair—a former mathematics teacher at Hoggard. With school underway, Chief Ulrichsen filled a spot on the NJROTC administrative staff. Sgt. Wilson continued his work as a cadet instructor for his sixth consecutive year. The cadets presented Mr. Saus and Sgt. Wilson with a surprise party on the 197th birthday of the Marine Corps. January 26 was the date of the annual NJROTC Ball. Cheryl Yvette Winn was crowned queen for this gala event. Dancing to the accompaniment of a combo band and an outstanding performance by the Queens Guard highlighted the night. John Peeler led the Hoggard Rifles this year, which was one of the finest teams Hoggard has ever had. The off-cam pus activities of the NJROTC Unit, especially the drill team and the color guard, have been numerous: presentation of colors, Kiwanis International; flag presentation and raising, Cape Fear Tech; Kenansville Poultry Queen Beauty Contest; Warsaw and Wilmington Veterans Day parades, Hoggard Homecoming Parade; color guard performance, NCAE supervisors meeting, Timme Plaza; Shalotte Christmas Parade; Governor's Inaugural Parade, Raleigh; Azalea Parade; cadet escorts, Golden Star Awards; color guard, North Carolina Practical Nurses Association; and NJROTC Drill Team competition, North Carolina State University during ROTC Week and won first place. Field trips have included: tour of Base facilities, Camp Lejeune; tours of USS North Carolina and Cutter Pontchartrain; and tours of Fort Fisher and the Weather Bureau. Honors Day climaxed the year with an awards presentation to honor and recognize all cadets for their outstanding performance for 1972-1973.
