Dickens had some comments pertaining to the 1970-71 season. Here they are: “The wrestling team this year was plagued with injuries. With almost every match the Vikings had to forfeit points. The Vikings did well with the few young men that stayed the entire year. These young men learned what personal pride and s loyalty to John T. Hoggard means. “The division this year was unusually tough. If wrestling at Hoggard is to be competitive, we must have more young men participating with a good attitude.” Thanks, Coach. 75 “First ya put your left foot forward .. .”

Our cagers, hoping to improve their fantastic 1970 record, opened the season with wins over Asheville and Durham. But Hoggard is not perfect, nay, for our “Cardiac Kids” lost the next game to Wilson. However, after some Patented Hebbe Practice Therapy, the Vikings whipped E. E. Smith. But some- thing went wrong, and we lost to New Bern. Two losses in five games! Oh, well. Kindling the fire of desire, Hoggard repaid Wilson, and “whupped”’ that old school across town, 68-59. But the Cardiac Kids lost ground and the game to Kinston. Coach Hebbe must have said something powerful then, for the Vikings romped to a four game winning streak, the longest of the season. But Smith broke the spell. Fie on you, Smith! Hoggard did beat New Bern before losing to New Hanover, Kinston, and Sanford. Were the Cardiac Kids suffering heart failure? No, we won our final games. In the tournament, we beat Ross before Smith beat us. That’s all, folks... BASKETBALL The Man with the Plan. oe 77
