KICK - OFF! Well, it must be said that the Hoggard football team improved. By two games. Did you hear? We won TWO WHOLE GAMES this year! Optimism is the key word, though. If Hoggard continues improving at the rate of two games a year, the Vikings should have a perfect season by 1975. Perhaps the minimal improvement of this football season over the last was due to the shortage of aspiring athletes at pre-season camp. Perhaps it was a psychological inhibition of the players due to various factors concerning Hoggard’s 1969-1970 football record. Maybe it was just plain bad luck. All three reasons, though you may not understand the second, are probably correct. The football players could list more, it you cared to ask. But remember, Hoggard did not have a bad season because of a poor team. We have the best team in the state! . . Just had some bad breaks. “Patience is my greatest virtue.” VARSITY FOOTBALL NO Xperience W 3 NECESSaR ull Ve IW View O 1 ns he car's ness (O- 0) Ned Wes wile Ask en at ANY ane MALLING. | ust be ahh Mo Al fp. ea

The Vikings tried to open the season in New Bern with a bang, but the game came off like a wet firecracker. Hoggard lost, 12-7. The mighty Wilson Titans visited Legion Staudium and scalped Hoggard, 22-0. “We feel we have a better team than our record indicates,” noted Coach Durham in review. The Hoggard football players awaited the fulfillment of his revelation. Anyway, the Vikings traveled to Fayetteville to lose to E. E. Smith, 42-14. And then hallelujah!!—-we beat West Carteret, 19-0. New Hanover managed to overpower Hoggard 28-7, the fourth straight deteat for the Vikings in our vicious interschool rivalry. Kinston provided the team with a great morale boost, going down 9-0. But the rest of the season was disappointing, to say the least. Hoggard lost to Sanford, Sanderson, Ross, and Jacksonville. Three of the losses were shutouts. But the biggest loss of the sea son was not a game, but a player. Trey Barrett, of the New Hanover Wildcats, died of injuries sustained in a game in Greenville. Hoggard has great pass protection. Isn't that so, Steve? .. . Steve? ? Donnie Bridges and Tim Atwood in No Man’s Land.
