Longnecker. JV’s play varsity clubs Wil oy bd Mike Parker delivers . . 72 The Junior Vikings played a scrappy schedule in their first year of competition. Playing in the shadow of their elder brothers, the JV’s met opponents including Acme Delco, Leland, Wallace, Hamstead, and Southport. Much of the opposition came from varsity teams of 3A and 2A clubs. Beating most of the more experienced clubs, the JV’s showed much potential and made the future Vikings baseball program optimistic.

The 1970 Varsity baseball squad put optimism in the mind of everyone. With championship material, along with a tough conference schedule, veteran coach E. A. Corbin looked eagerly ahead. Losing little from graduation and gaining much new and talented material, the Viking hardballers did constitute a fortified attack. Entering Division One as possible favorites, the Vikings also played many other 4A teams in their 18-game schedule. Donnie Bridges, Randy Perry, Mike Callahan, Steve Stevens, and Thurston Watkins made up a young and talented pitching Randy Perry rears back . . . staff. Rounding out the infield were Greg Dalton, Robert Along with a powerful Billingsly, Bobby Schupp, Mike bench and team spirit, the Jacobs, and Steve King. Hoggard’s varsity tennis team attained conference status in this, their second year of existence. Big coach D. C. Dickens anticipated a better season in 1970 than 1969 and outlined his winning strategy in long practices after school. Included were matches with Goldsboro, Kinston, Jacksonville, and the tough match with the New Hanover Wildcats, who are conference favorites this year. Jerry Jacobs, Mike Taylor, Ricky Pridemore, and Robbie Hayes made the backbone of the Viking tennis team. Showing better form with the passing of each year, Hoggard’s netters should develop into a first-rate power in the near future. Netters enter conference Jerry Jacobs bears down on the ball...
