Hoggard’s 1970 track team is better than ever, with an increase of 12 members over last year’s squad, bringing the total roster to 29. Coach Matt Fisher noted that a few of the boys have been on the team for three years and that several have returned from last year, along with the usual new faces. A tie with New Hanover in the first meet, coupled with Tim Atwood’s new records in the 100-yard dash, brought joy to the Viking field squad. Other meets included Fayetteville Ross, Terry Sanford, and Jacksonville. Hoggard will be eligible for the Division meets, the Eastern 4A meet, and State track and field events. First Row: B. Hoggard’s junior varsity basketball team did nearly as well as the Senior Vikings, running up a 15-5 record before the season ended. Following an opening loss to Leland, the baby Vikings went on to beat New Bern, 63-53. They were paced by big Bob Hayes and sharp-eyed James Atkinson. Big moments for Hoggard’s JV cagers included two satisfying wins over New Hanover, 96-55 and 45-38, a romp over Reid Ross, 71-47, and the season-ending victory over Kinston, 54-47.
