Vikings fan out for attack .. . Vikings meet challengin Hoggard’s 1969 squad showed no evidence of establishing a dynasty here, though our previous teams seemed to point that way. One of the biggest shortcomings was the disappointing turnout at pre-season camp, coupled with the annual reshuffling of coaches. The first game of the season matched the Vikings against New Bern at Legion Stadium, and we lost, 18-7. On the rebound, Hoggard traveled to Wilson. The Cyclones, always a tough opponent, demolished the Vikings 67-13. Still numb from the Wilson game, Hoggard lost to Fayetteville’s E. E. Smith, 47-0. Unable to shake their slump, Hoggard’s iron men dropped games to West Carteret and New Hanover, 27-12 and 25-7, respectively. JV Football Coach Matt Fisher observes intensely from the sidelines. Coaching staff reshuffled Seemingly keeping with the old Hoggard Tradition, the coaching staff again had several new faces. Along with old standbys Hebbe, Corbin, and Fisher, coaches Durham, Dickens, and Hall joined the mentorships of Hoggard. The varsity “slave-drivers” for football were led by head coach Ray Durham who was assisted by coaches D. C. Dickens and Jim Hebbe. The junior varsity staff included coaches Jim Hall and Mathew Fisher. Coach Jim Hebbe began his third straight season as basketball coach for Hoggard. Assisting him with those “talented Vikings” was Coach E. A. Corbin. The junior varsity coaches were Hall and Fisher. Wrestling this year was handled by Coach D. C. Dickens. Hoggard’s track men were led by head coach Fisher and his assistant, Coach Durham. Coach Corbin was the baseball leader for his second consecutive year and was joined this year by Coach Hall. Hebbe also led the talented Hoggard golf team. Tennis coach Dickens anticipated a much improved season. With their assets our athletes were well trained. Left to Right: R. Durham, D. Dickens, J. ... and it looks as though they will have to wait until next year. Beginning the second half of the season with the game in Kinston, Hoggard was ripped 13-0. Next, on a cold field in Fayetteville, the Vikings were trounced 44-12. And then all of a sudden it was homecoming time. Hoggard students showed up at Legion Stadium in cheerful spirits, ready to witness a win. But we lost again, 20-7. Fayetteville seemed to hex the Vikings this year, for we lost to Reid Ross High 48-12. Hoggard closed the year by losing to the Jacksonville Cardinals, 33-6.
