Hewlett makes his move... The 1968-'69 John T. Hoggard Basketball team under Coach Jim Hebbe was brilliant throughout the season. They were undefeated at home and won 18 straight after two opening setbacks. The only disappointment of the season was that the Vikings were unable to participate in a post-season tournament. Their independent status barred them trom 4A tournament competition. Statistic wise the Vikings were also very impressive. They averaged 75.5 points per game as a team. Four starters averaged in double figures: Mike Callahan, 13.5; Mike Hewlett, 10.2; Willie Meyer, 14.3; and Pat Lewis with a 12.5. On the foul line the Vikings were, deadly with a .680 percentage. Berry Napp hit from the line for a remarkable .892 percent. The 1968-'69 Vikings were regarded as one of the best cage squads in Eastern North Carolina.
