Under the direction of new head coach Jan Brady, Hoggard’s 1968 cross country team emerged with a record of six wins and four loses after tour enduring meets. The Viking distance men opened their season on their home track with a meet including Fayetteville Santord, Fayetteville Ross, and New Hanover High. Hoggard’s runners placed second beating Ross and New Hanover and losing to Sanford. Again, the Vikings played host to New Hanover in their next meet of the season. Hoggard defeated the Wildcats thus extending their overall record to three wins and one loss. The first road trip took the Hoggard team to Fayetteville for a meet with Fayetteville Santord, Fayetteville Ross, Cary, and Scotland. The distance men defeated Ross and Scotland thus extending their season record to five wins and three loses. The last encounter was at Wilson’s home track. Hoggard and New Hanover were featured here, but Wilson proved too much for the Vikings. Hoggard men defeated New Hanover but fell to Wilson. After this losing encounter, the Hoggard record stood at six wins and four loses... a winning season. Ricky Christopher, top distance man, sets pace. The 1968-69 Hoggard basketball squad compiled Vikings Compile an excellent record of 18 wins and only two losses. This was a tremendous jump from the 12-10 ¢ record of the previous year. After being defeated Dmpeessive Record in their first two games, the Vikings ae roaring back to reel off 18 straight impressive victories. In the season opener the Vikings met cross- town rival New Hanover. Unsure of their attack and best lineup, the Vikings fell to the more experienced Wildcats, 66-51. Playing in Morehead City, the Vikings were defeated by West Carteret, 72-63. The outlook for the season was dismal, but things would change. On their home floor for the first time, the Vikings rolled over the Jacksonville Cardinals, 62-46. Beginning to look impressive, the Vikings dropped Wilson, their second straight 4A foe, 74-57. These two classy victories may have given the Vikings the jolt they needed to spur them to their 18 game win streak. Burgaw next fell to Hoggard, 100-67, as the Vikings hit the century mark for the first time in school history. A Holiday Tournament in Brogden Hall was next on the Hoggard schedule. On consecutive nights, the Vikings downed 4A foes— Williams of Burlington and Edwards of Asheville, 69-63 and 67-64, respectively. These two impressive victories built up the steadily growing Viking momentum. Jacksonville fell to Hoggard again 57-53, and the Vikings extended their streak to seven games when they slaughtered Coach Hebbe is pleased with season results. . . Swansboro 80-40. Raleigh Sanderson fell to the Vikings 81-56 as Hoggard stood at the half way mark with an 8-2 record. Pat Lewis puts one up...
