' « .:-« ' iSS.— «i -, . . CDR DAVID L. BUCKEY The Navigation Department is a group of 29 sailors (Quartermasters and Signalmen) who specialize In navigation and visual communications. The specific job of the 15 Quartermasters onboard USS JOHN C. STENNIS is the safe navigation of the ship. Using all means possible (charts, visual aids, electronic navigation equipment and the stars in the sky), these sailors are able to keep an accurate plot and position of the ship. This job is im- portant to ensure that the USS JOHN C. STENNIS transits frort destination to destination on time and clear of all danger. The Signal Bridge team mission is to communicate with naval units of all nations and commercial shipping. They com municate visually by flashing light, semaphore and flag hoist When not engaged in communications, Signalmen (SM ' s) ser as expert lookouts reporting and identifying air, surface, and subsurface contacts to the bridge. The Navigation Department also completes numerous maintenance checks on their damage control and precision in rate equipment. Additionally, Navigation Department keeps the bridge and signal bridge in tip top shape for the many tours and distinguished visitors who call on this United States asset. The Navigation Department stands among the smalles of departments onboard USS JOHN C. STENNIS, but performs - = nf the most crucial functions. L.
