ENGLISH DEPARTMENT ... In English I-VIII, for each complete year taken, one credit is given. The program now in progress is fused, so that a student studies literature and grammar together. Creative Writing is open to all students who have taken and completed English VI and who have been recommended by their teachers for showing special ability in original compositions. This course may be substituted for English VIII. Students write short stories, plays, poems and other types of creative work. World Literature is an English VIII credit, and is usually taken by those students who like to read and who want a wider view of literature. Journalism I and II are issued one credit. In this course a student’s study covers the newspaper, report- ing news, editing, copy-reading, headline writing, proof-reading, advertising and page make-ups. FOREIGN LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT ... Spanish I-VIII, one of four foreign languages taught at Reagan, gives one credit for each complete year. The first two years of Spanish include the basics of grammar and practice in spoken Spanish and lesson reading. Spanish V-VI1I are advanced conversational. The geography, history, folklore, and customs of Mexico, Central America and South America are studied. German I-VIII is taught with one credit for each full year. The first two years of German give the student a background of German culture and the essentials of basic German grammar and vocabulary. In the next two years of German a student may read in special fields of interest to him. French I-VIII is taught with one credit given for each full year completed. In the first two years the student developes his basic vocabulary. Songs are learned, and novels and plays are read. In the next two years French is used exclusively for all classwork. Latin I-VIII grants one credit for every year at- tained. The first two years find Latin students studying pronunciation and building a larger English vocab- ulary based on Latin roots. The following years arc composed of a cultural and historical background and a broadening of visions, by translating and studying the classics and their influence on people today.
