ENGLISH DEPARTMENT ... In English I-VIII, for each complete year taken, one credit is given. The program now in progress is fused, so that a student studies literature and grammar together. Creative Writing is open to all students who have taken and completed English VI and who have been recommended by their teachers for showing special ability in original compositions. This course may be substituted for English VIII. Students write short stories, plays, poems and other types of creative work. World Literature is an English VIII credit, and is usually taken by those students who like to read and who want a wider view of literature. Journalism I and II are issued one credit. In this course a student’s study covers the newspaper, report- ing news, editing, copy-reading, headline writing, proof-reading, advertising and page make-ups. FOREIGN LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT ... Spanish I-VIII, one of four foreign languages taught at Reagan, gives one credit for each complete year. The first two years of Spanish include the basics of grammar and practice in spoken Spanish and lesson reading. Spanish V-VI1I are advanced conversational. The geography, history, folklore, and customs of Mexico, Central America and South America are studied. German I-VIII is taught with one credit for each full year. The first two years of German give the student a background of German culture and the essentials of basic German grammar and vocabulary. In the next two years of German a student may read in special fields of interest to him. French I-VIII is taught with one credit given for each full year completed. In the first two years the student developes his basic vocabulary. Songs are learned, and novels and plays are read. In the next two years French is used exclusively for all classwork. Latin I-VIII grants one credit for every year at- tained. The first two years find Latin students studying pronunciation and building a larger English vocab- ulary based on Latin roots. The following years arc composed of a cultural and historical background and a broadening of visions, by translating and studying the classics and their influence on people today. Related Math may be :aken for two years with one credit per year. It may e taken by Plan I or Plan II students or by those who need more math before beginning algebra. General Math is a one year, one credit course that nay be taken by ninth grade students only. Algebra MV are one credit courses per year. Al- gebra III and IV may be taken as independent half rredits. Algebra I and II must be taken before any ad- vanced math courses and are required for all Plan I itudents. Algebra III and IV are more advanced and nclude some logarithms, graphs and trigonometry. Ugebra III and IV are especially designed to prepare tudents for college work. Geometry I and II acquires one credit. Plan I stu- dents must take either geometry or a second year of algebra. Geometry is the study of geometric forms and figures. Trigonometry is a one half credit course in which the study of the triangle and its use in solving problems is taught. Its prerequisite is Algebra III and is recom- mended for students who plan a college major in math. Business Math I is a one-half credit course de- signed to help the student develop accuracy and speed in calculations, to use short cuts in figuring and to solve some problems mentally. Business Math II is an advanced course in general math designed to help students solve problems en- countered in everyday life. Analytical Geometry is a more advanced math course designed to help students who major in math in college. Elementary Analysis is an advanced course for those very interested in math. 195

General Science I and II is a one credit course offered in ninth and tenth grades only. Biology I and II is a one credit course in which all living things, their behavior, reproduction, heredity and methods of securing and using foods are studied. Physics I and II is a one credit course which includes the study of light, heat, sound, mechanics and elec- tricity. It is recommended for those students who plan to take any advanced science. Chemistry I and II acquires one credit per year and is the study of material substances and the changes they undergo. Physiology I and II are both one-half credit courses. They deal with the way in which the human body is constructed and the manner in which the various parts interact, keeping them working at maximum ef- ficiency. Sociology is a one-half credit course in which social problems and methods of solving them are taught. Problems in family life, political parties, racial diffi- culties, crime, and the moulding of our culture are stressed. 197
