Historian iriirik' CCASKEY HIGH SCHO0LihoW much that means to us! lt has been our school home for three years, unforgettable years. As we look back, we remember that first day when we were terrified by so many halls and doors confronting us. We have conquered much that is behind these doors and now new halls and new doors lie before us. lt is for the decisions to come that our high school experiences have prepared us. There are so many memories we want to keep that we have bound them together in our Yearbook-the many new friend- ships, our hard-Worked-for A, B, Cs, the beauty of our concerts, the thrill of pep assemblies, those breath-taking touchdowns, and even the cafeteria rush and seventh periods. How we are going to miss all these things! As We linger for the last times in the lobby, a sadness comes over us as we realize that this is the end. Now the world awaits us, its corridors and doors before us. On our high school days we turn our backs, but our hearts- never. ln memory they will always live! B. F. SAWYER CHARLES H. GLADFELTER IOHN W. ARMSTRONG February 16, 1945 April 27, 1946 August 31, 1946 IOHN BACHMAN THELMA BROOKS August 16, 1944 Icmuary 15, 1946 peafication O THE MEMORY ot the teachers of lVlcCaskey High School Who Were removed from our midst, in the Providence ot God, during our stay here. We pay trib- ute to these instructors who were deeply interested in our school and who were ever helptul, considerate, and generous in dealing With our problems as students . . . And to these members of our class who no longer walk McCaskey's halls with us, we dedicate this volume with a feeling ot deep sorrow and loss. if E ij S 2 Q 2 1 E g. Q 'Z 2 5 E ,, 7 Ni,- 5 x, Q X V. But now our thoughts must turn- New, sterner lessons We must learn. The greatest task of ours has now begun- The fight for peace for all, and war tor none. Toward this great end We all must learn to live To make it final, not just tentative. Then let us escape the past, and never cease To press with others toward the goal of peace, RUTH BASSLER - 50 - elau iitoty iz- ix? as 'Tis education forms the common mind: just as the twig is bent the tree's inclined. The reception of a diploma on Commencement Day signifies the end of formal educa- tion for many of us. To others, it is but a steppingstone to institutions of higher learning. We could not hope for a better start in life than we have received at McCaskey High. As all good things must, our high school days have come to an end. But the memories which our three years at this modern school have left with us will never end. As with all sophomores, our life at McCaskey began with bewildered and confused days when we hoped for the helping hands of sympathetic upperclassmen. It took a very short time to learn that we were on our own, however, and we moved into the stride of high school living with a greater sense of self-confidence and responsibility than we had ever experienced in our previous schooling. As always, studies took up most of our time, and we found, as far as the administration was concerned, education was a serious business. Sports, clubs, and social activities crowded us for time and before we realized it, summer was upon us. Then came the junior year and things really started. Frank Bashore was elected presi- dent of the junior class with Herbert Galebach serving as vice-president. Ioyce Rhen was secretary, Robert Hilt treasurer, and Iames McCaskey was made class historian for two years. Although the year, scholastically speaking, was the hardest for many of us, extracurricular activities increased in intensity. Our class was given a fine example by championship sports teams that reached a high water mark in the school's athletic history. We envied the seniors as they completed their last year and made a resolution to do everything, and even more than they did, in a bigger and better way. Time flies when living is joyful and once again we saw a class graduate. Three summer months rolled by rapidly, and just as rapidly the honor and responsibil- ity of being seniors fell upon our shoulders. Iay Simmons was chosen to lead the class as president soon after our third September in high school started. He was assisted by Gladys Humphreys, vice-president, Ruth Bassler, secretary, and Dolores Brubaker, treasurer. Under the guidance of these officers the class of 1947 became the first in a long time to take an active interest in the organization of an active alumni group. King Football stole the lime- light -in the fall as the Red Tornado gridders won seven of their eight games to win unoffi- cially the championship of the newly formed Central Pennsylvania League. Coach Woody Sponaugle said that the team was the best he had ever coached at McCaskey and even at that the eleven had never reached its peak. The early organization of the Social Committee and the election of Esther McClune as Halloween Queen also highlighted the fall schedule. Donald Pollock added to the efficiency of our class by giving expert leadership to a Student Council that really accomplished things. Our basketball, swimming, and wrestling squads were among the best in scholastic circles, to say nothing of the dramatic hit, Ram- shackle Inn. A victorious third party put William Snyder in the Mayor's Office for a day and he reflected the keen interest of McCaskey students in democratic government. We had hardly become accustomed to the idea of being seniors when spring came with an outstanding track team, tennis, hayrides, dances, concerts, and many other social and sports activities. Now the time has come for us to leave our Alma Mater. But we leave it in body only. The corridors of the john Piersol McCaskey High School will retain the memory of one of the finest classes ever to attend a Lancaster high school. Echoes of hard work and gay times will resound for a long, long time in the halls and classrooms and on the campus of this institution. Looking back, we can honestly say, The race is run-the accomplishments are many. IAMES MCCASKEY-Historian -51- .gntroafucing . . .
