WEBB Secretary LAWRENCE MURPHY Treasurer EUGENE B. GALLAGHER Historian 7-OZZWOZJ ik ii? Sir UR high school days are over. Ahead lies the unknown future, which will see, to a large extent, the fruits of our work here. Let us, therefore, examine the seed we have sown. The records, especially those of this, our last year at McCaskey, not only reveal a history of past events, but also render a definite indication of future achievements. lt is this we wish to pre- sent in this VIDETTE, 1946. A yearbook, however, is more than a hundred or so pages of pictures and data bound in a beautiful cover to form a cherished record of the best year of one's life. lt is the football team interrupting its practice for a few moments to cooperate with the Vidette photographer, it is the Glee Club posing for a shot of the Christmas program, it is the Girl Reserves shivering in the cold in front of the main entrance, it is a staff meeting where high school students begin to shoulder responsibilities. This is the Yearbook that cannot be put into print, this is the Yearbook that lives forever in our hearts and minds. But this is all past. The football team has laid aside its helmets. The bright red gowns of the Glee Club have been hung away. The senior Girl Reserve organizations have disbanded. The Yearbook has been published, it now stands as a VIDETTE, a sentinel that, though keeping watch over our record, looks toward the future into which we are moving. 4 AIR CORPS ecfication as ff Sir HUMBLY AND GRATEPULLY WE DEDICATE THIS OUR BOOK TO THE YOUNG MEN WHO WENT FORTH FROM McCASKEY'S HALLS TO GIVE EVEN THEIR LAST TREASURE UPON THE ALTAR OE FREEDOM. ? 1 4 new BENIAMIN B. Our race is finished, and our course is run. Our high school labors lie behind, and all Our aims are reached. But now we hear the call To future heights, the battle is not done! The way ahead is not a road of fun. Past hidden stumps ot hate and sin we crawl To gain a view along that wondrous hall Of our last goal-a dwelling in the sun. So let us nerve ourselves to wage the fight Which is before-that right may stand above The power ot wrong, and justice never cease. Now set we forth well arrned with Gods own might Reflecting His great pr1nc1ple of love For all to build a world of lasting peace DAVID I I-lOl-I SiK1E Y! Commencement Day is right around the corner, and this time it really hits us, the seniors at McCaskey. Soon, instead of calling ourselves students, we'll claim the title of alumni of Iohn Piersol McCaskey High School. And that's exactly why Commencement is so important this year. lt's we who will graduate this time. Of course, senior classes have always felt the same way about graduation as we do, and yet somehow or other we are different from every class that preceded us. We're probably neither better nor worse-We're just different. McCaskey High to us was different from the McCaskey High that other classes have attended. ln the sarne manner each one of us will remember different things about high school life, although many of the important events in our three years at McCaskey we'll all remember. This class history, therefore, traces the outline of events common to all of us-happenings which none of us will forget. Away back in September, 1943, long before we knew as much as the teachers or even thought we did, some five hundred supposedly-scared ex-junior high kids were admitted to McCaskey as sophomores. We found that there were fewer rules to hamper us than there had been in junior high. Eventually we also learned that these few rules were enforced more rigidly than those in junior high. Homework took up a good bit of our after school hours, especially for the Latin students. For ten months we endured the indignity of being mere sophomores. After a welcome summer vacation we returned to McCaskeyg this time, however, we were veterans-we knew the ropes. Our class officers, elected shortly after the start of school that year, were Lawrence Murphy, presidentg Richard Holzwarth, vice-presidentg Mary Ellen Long, secretary, Bernard Adams, treasurerg and Eugene Gallagher, historian. Many of us filtered into McCaskey's extracurricular activities immediately. Our football record was encouraging, with five wins and four losses. The assembly programs featured many excellent speakers, of whom Dr. Davidian from Armenia was perhaps the most out- standing. Our toughest class last year was plane geometry, but American history ran a close second. Sooner than We realized, finals came, and another class was graduating. The most important thing about this graduation was that it made us seniors. At last the big year had come for us-not only the big year, but also the last year. Immediately we elected new class officers, They were as follows: Bernard Adams, presi- dent, Harry Coyle, vice-president, Lloyd Webb, secretary, and Lawrence Murphy, treasurer. Homework was really piled on us, and we realized how wrong the people were who said, The junior year is your hardest year at McCaskey. Extracurricular activities took up much more of our time, because now we were run- ning them. The Social Committee had a successful year with several swell dances to its credit, despite the fact that it was started late. The Girl Reserve and Hi-Y Clubs also gave several big dances. Our journalistic enterprises prospered-the Vidette newspaper grew two inches this year, and that Yearbook cover was something new! The Band, Orchestra, and Glee Clubs gave concerts which were well attended and well worth the time spent on them. Our stage became a battleground as the Student Council and the National Honor Society fought to see which could sponsor the better assembly programs. Iune brought an end to these activities and to our studies also. The time has come for us to check out. If our high school years have been ones of fun and activity alone, they were not wasted. If we have gained a thorough, Well-rounded education which will serve as a tool throughout our lives, if we have learned to think and act as mature, although young, men and women, then we have attained the true goal, the ultimate objective of high school. At last we must depart from McCaskey, finish the chapter called high school life. To these things we turn our backs now, but our hearts-never! EUGENE B. Sure you have. In the years ahead of you, this school annual will probably be handled by future generations with the same kind of chuckles you gave out when you looked at the pictures of grandma as a girl. Today C-randma's pictures are old fashioned. Yours are modern. In the years to come yours will be old fashioned too, for new techniques in the printing business will make them so.
