Treafurer 72 CLASS lcllSTQlRY THE THIRTY-NINERSH I Listen my children, and you shall hear of the adventures of the Class of '39. What fun! What excitement! What thrills! Long ago, in the late summer of 1936 fyes, children, you were very young thenj, a motley group of boys and girls swung toward the center of Lancaster for their first day at high school. While the girls turned their pretty little feet toward Charlotte and Chest- nut Streets, the boys headed for the big edifice at Orange and Mulberry. Everyone was filled with that tense, expectant feeling which can be appreciated by only those who still remember their initial day in high school. A few days later more than one of this group felt that he or she had been built up to an awful let downl' and that high school wasn't so wonderful after all. But the majority continued their eager quest for a school life rich in meaning. As sophs they realized that lessons could consume a great deal of one's time and that glee club, band and orchestra were about as far as their outside activi- ties could extend. But by the time The Chimes of Normandy were pealing out the reminder that summer vacation was near, most of our thirty-niners had learned that life at Lancaster High could be lots of fun. And so, one year after their first triumphant entry, back they came, ready for any- thing. Although their attention was directed, for the most part, toward the new and magnificent J. P. McCaskey High School building, they delved into every activity open to them-debating, Vidette staff work, intra-mural and inter-scholastic sports, drum and bugle corps activities. In fact, they were so much interested in these affairs that they forgot to organize, as most of their predecessors had done. But consider, here's a class that was different! And when, in February, 1938, they turned eastward to their new educational home, they continued their good work and were soon ready to become enthusiastic seniors. With Mr. Atchley as their chieftain, these worthy scholars chose the three Roberts- Sherts, Quade and Rill-as their President, Vice-President, and Secretary, respectively, William Armstrong as Treasurer, and Carrie Herr as Historian. A large number of the class were welcomed into the National Honor Society, and the Student Council continued going to town under the noteworthy leadership of members of this class. The highly successful class play, Captain Applejackf' featured the dramatic-minded students, while those musically inclined turned to the annual Gilbert and Sullivan production for their display of talent. And now, with the excitement of class day, the senior prom, and grad- uation, who wouldn't admit that the thirty-niners are an eager, alert, worthwhile class? 73 GLASS IPQEM AVE-VALES I The year is o'er, and before us ' Lies what no man knows, For now we are about to journey Through the valley of many foes. A feeling of joy and gladness That we alone can feel, Should fill our souls and spirits Like the joy the chimes can peal. Like the beats of triumphant marches Our footsteps will echo through time. And our work will be remembered In prose as well as rhyme. And now, as we begin a new life, One of failure or successg Let us go forth with the prayer in our hearts To find true happiness.
