CDL-35 is the second ship of the Mitscher CDL-2D class of frigates, and was commissioned in October 1953. She is named for the late Admiral ,Iohn S. McCain who gained fame during World War II as the commander of a fast carrier task force. The MC CAIN is approximately 493 feet long, 50 feet of beam, and has a fully loaded displa- cement of 4400 tons. She is equipped with 5 and 3 guns. Her main engines develop 80,000 horsepower, giving her a speed in excess of 35 knots. The electrical generators could meet the needs of a city of 50,000. The air conditioning and refrigeration equipment has the capacity of an ice plant making 100,000 pounds of ice a day. The fire mains have a capacity equal to that of the combined output of five city fire trucks. The MC CAIN is homeported in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and is the flagship for Destroyer Squadron Twenty Five. She has freqently visited the Far East as a unit of the United States Seventh Fleet. In December 1958 she carried anti-biotics, and raised over 351,000.00 for flood victims in the Bengal- Orissa lowlands outlying Calcutta, India. In January 1960, the ship rescued the entire 41 man crew of the sinking freighter Shinwa Maru in the East China Sea. The United States SEVENTH Fleet, worldls largest task fleet, maintains surveillance throughout nearly one sixth of the earth's surface or thirty million square miles, from the Siberian coastal waters in the North to Antarctica, and from the Indian Ocean in the West to 160 degrees East longitude, a point about 1,200 miles East of the U.S. territory of Guam. Comprised of some 125 ships, 650 aircraft and 64,000 highly trained Navy and Marine Corps per- sonnel, the SEVENTH Fleet is dispersed throughout this vast ocean area, acting as a deterrent to enemy aggression in the Western Pacific and insuring that the sea lanes are kept open for free world trade. Organizationally, the SEVENTH Fleet is formed into five major task forces and ten task groups, of which the hardest hitting element is the modern, high-speed, attack carrier striking force. It consists of three attack carriers forming the core of three carrier strike groups, each capable of mov- ing to any troubled area in the Western Pacific. Supporting the fast carrier force are cruisers and destroyers on which the Fleet's heavy artillery is concentrated. Their surface striking power provides both anti-aircraft protection and cover for amphibious operations. The MC CAIN operates with the Anti-Submarine Hunter-Killer Group, better known as the HUK Group, which are built around a high-speed aircraft carrier. The aircraft, destroyers and a carrier work together as a specialized force to eliminate the undersea threat. Aside from military operations, the SEVENTH Fleet is constantly active in search and rescue missions, community aid and relief missions, and myriad People-to-People activities, all of which promote good will and understanding between the United States and the peoples of Southeast Asia. The SEVENTH Fleet is a corps of 64,000 ambassadors of good will, with her sailors and marines giving thousands of pints of blood and thousands of dollars annually to the needy and unfortunate. The People-to-People program is living proof that the SEVENTH Fleet is, in practice, as well as theory, a 'qReady Power for Peace.
