Coach Valcnzisi The John Marshall 1985-86 Football team was less successful than expected, but they proved to be a group of guys with big dreams and even bigger hopes, and Success did not totally elude them. When the Red Dogs won, they won big. But when they lost, it was a fight to the end. Like knights loyal to their King, the mighty Lawyers mauled and brutally ripped through opposing defensive lines, in search of a victory. More often than not, however, time was not on their side, making the big finish impossible. The final won-loss record is not a true reflection of the team's Fine athletic ability, or of the effort put forth by every one of the young players. Led by senior Captains Rodney Harris and Kevin Jones, this team achieved great personal heights and those heights are the most important of all. These guys are truly winners. 62 Sports 64 Spoiis Sports 65 Ken I-aleski SOUTH SENATE ALL-STARS VANGUARD: How would you rate yourself as a player' KEN: Not as a simple, but os a team player. It’s theJMH Varsity Basketball Team. These 12 darling guys were led by Senior captains Charles Moten and Marvin Williams and coached by Mr. Ron Alpine. Throughout the season, they worked their way into our hearts by dribbling and dunking, passing and scoring. The team, always pushed to the wire, but it seemed as though they came up two points short at the buzzer. Because they were the reigning South Senate Champions, all of the teams within the conference played them twice as tough. Indeed a young team, the Lawyers never gave up Quit was not a word in their vocabulary. Every minute was played with the intensity of the first, and that is a fine characteristic of a winner. Many people were expecting this team to repeat as South Senate Champions. How did you handle this pressure? I told myself that we cannot be number one all the time. What professional or college player do you admire most? Dominique Wilkins, without a doubt. The man has a devastating dunk! If given the choice of basketball teams to play with, which one would it be? I really could not say who I would like to play with, but I do know that it would be an NCAA Division I team. Sports 83 TRACK TEAM SENIORS 1986 TRACK MVP’S Aaron I-ctt Vanguard: DeNean: Vanguard: DeNean: Vanguard: DeNean: Vanguard: DeNean: Vanguard: DeNean: What was your reason for first becoming in-volved with the sport of Track and Field? I saw the opportunity to excel in something that I liked. What are your goals on the track in 1986? 1 am unsure at the present moment, but whatever my goals, I am sure that with hard work, 1 will accomplish them. Are the Olympic Games in your future? Again. 1 am uncertain, but being a member of the team would be a great honor. How would you rate your individual success since your initial involvement on the track? 1 would give myself an A for my astonishing accomplishments. What is your greatest memory of JMH Track? My greatest memory is of being the City Champion in 1984, and of my coach, Mr. Elkins for without him, my success would have been non-existent. Vanguard: Because of your large success last season, big people are expecting big things from Aaron Lett. Will this pressure hamper your performance? Aaron: I don t think so because when I am running, I tend to relax. I don't think about pressure to win. I just expect myself to do well in every race. Vanguard: What do you predict your success will be like in 1986? Aaron: Success only comes with hard work and determination. If I work hard, and perform up to my expectations, success will be going to a university of my choice when I graduate. Vanguard: Are the Olympic Games in your future? Aaron: I think so, if I rake care of myself and continue to improve in every race. Hopefully. I will be able to make the L'.S. Olympic Team. Vanguard: If you had to rate your success of the past 3 years from 1 to 9, what would it be? Aaron: Nine because, I had a good year in the tenth grade, and an even better year in the eleventh. I expect to have an even better year in the twelfth. Vanguard: What is your greatest memory of JMH Track? Aaron: Being 400 meter champion at several invitational meets, and having a great coach. Mr. Elkins, to help me further continue my career in track. DeN'ean Kirknur. Sports 85 WEIGHTLIFTING The 1985-86 John Marshall High School WHIGHTLIFT-ING TF.AM is quite a group of young men and ladies. The men's Weightlifting is made up of mainly Varsity and J.V. Football players, while the ladies team is made up of a few girls with a lot of heart. We don't have any hot shots this year,'' says Mr. Valenzisi, the Weightlifting coach. But there are guys who arc consistent and will be able to hold their own in the competition. ' This year's Weightlifting team works together. Success for them comes as no surprise. Bel lone RISK To laugh is to risk appearing the fool. To weep is to risk appearing sentimental. To reach out for another is to risk involvement. To expose feelings is to risk exposing your true self. To place your ideas, your dreams before the crowd is to risk their loss. To love is to risk not being loved in return. To live is to risk dying. To hope is to risk despair. To try is to risk failure. But risks must be taken because the greatest hazard in life is to risk nothing. The person who risks nothing does nothing, has nothing, is nothing He may avoid suffering and sorrow, but he simply cannot learn, fee';, grow, love... live. Chained by his certitides, he is a slave; he has forfeited freedom. Only a person who risks is free. 144 Ads rv —w i t i I I
