They have made every effort to prepare you to meet the challenges ahead. It is clear, however, that the high school education which you have received in the twentieth century may not be adequate to meet the requirements of the technical society of the twenty-first century. Each of you must remain alert to the evolving demands of the world. Each of you must resolve to continue building upon your high school education throughout your career if you wish to enjoy the good life.” It is my hope that your experiences at John Marshall High School will be the base from which you can achieve all of your aspirations. The Co-Editors Zarita Williams and Amy Richardson did their best in making this yearbook a success. The road that the staff traveled was long and hard. Many obstacles got in the way which included trying to meet deadlines. The hardest part of being on the staff was making sure that the majority of the senior class members were pictured in the yearbook. The staff tried to add variety to the 84 Vanguard. The staffs goal was to make this yearbook the best John Marshall have ever had. In order to reach this goal, the various ideas of the staff were compiled into one book. Such ideas included having the senior portraits placed in the back of the yearbook instead of the front which was the usual procedure in past years. The reason for this is that the seniors are the most important subject in the yearbook and as the saying goes save the best for last.” Special thanks go to Ms. Fran Baran. yearbook advisor. who kept cool shen confusion and chaos threatened to undo a staff under pressure. The 1983 season was slightly disappointing for the Lawyers, but it did provide positive motivation for next year's squad. The team was made up of fourteen seniors. Our Lawyers finished the season with a 5-5 final record. After losing their first three contests, all close games, the Big Red Machine got in gear and started to roll. It rolled over West Tech, Lincoln-West, and Rhodes cn route to a rendezvous with cross-town rival. John F. Kennedy. The Lawyers got on the board first, but quickly fell behind 18-7 in the first quarter. The Lawyer defense held the rest of the game, but the offense could only produce one more touchdown. The Lawyers rebounded from this defeat to soundly smash East Tech’s Scarabs. They continued with their solid effort and in the last two games of the season showed their best. The Homecoming Game had to be the Lawyers’ most satisfying victory. The team repelled the Rebels of John Adams 22-0. Not only did they shut out the South Senate champions; they were the only Senate team to beat the Rebels. All in all, the season was a challenging and worthwhile one for all participants and spectators. 54 Sports Jubilant Lawyers after a touchdown. Please make a touchdown. Marc! begs Coach Valcn isi. To reach out for another is to risk involvement. To expose feelings is to risk exposing your true self. To place your ideas, your dreams before the crowd is to risk their loss. To love is to risk not being loved in return. To live is to risk dying. To hope is to risk despair. To try is to risk failure. But risks must be taken because the greatest hazard in life is to risk nothing. The person who risks nothing docs nothing, has nothing, is nothing. He may avoid suffering and sorrow, but he simply cannot learn, feel. grow, love ... live. Chained by his certitudes, he is a slave; he has forfeited freedom. Only a person who risks is free. E d • I V t a 0 n V 8 • u a a I r d B 0 a r d Vanguard Madness By Arnetha Williams The Vanguard Times' leading story is about Co-Editors-in-Chicf, Amy Richardson and Zarita Williams. They had a serious dispute over w hether to take away head photographer Garfield Lawrence’s computer and ship it to Jamaica or let him have another day to develop the pictures. They decided to give Lawrence another chance due to the fact that he was showing signs of insanity at the mere thought of taking away his toy. Activities Editor Zandra Wolfgram nearly lost her job this year over uncontrollable urges to scream “Yeah, team. every time Editor Zarita Williams or James Mitchell (Advertisement Editor) came up with a good idea. Senior Editor Natalie Stokes almost got stepped on trying to get a story on senior basketball team members. Whenever Natalie tried to get close enough to ask questions. Coach Ron Alpine threatened to have her arrested for trespassing and cutting her elementary school classes. Sports Editors Archie Thomas and Marian Wilson were arrested for stealing sports candid shots from the Vanguard picture file. This plot was uncovered by Faculty Editors Jennifer Maddox and Carmen Watts. The two were found guilty as charged and have to serve a 103 years in the Behavior Modification Room. Cop Editor Alisa Smedley was sent loan insane asylum. It appears that Miss Smedlcy was confused about a stor that she was tNping for the Vanguard which was really a story for The Interpreter (of which Miss Smedley serves as editor). When confronted by Photo Editor Michelle Williams (who pointed out the mistake) Miss Smedley violently threw the typewriter against the wall. Photographer Michael Lcftwich was held hostage by an angry student who he had taken a picture of while the student was cutting class. Steps are being taken for his release.
