Marshall's infamous I.D. woman. Many senior's will remember Mr. Robert Engstli as their counselor from their sophomore and junior years. Mr. Engstli was a dedicated and caring guidance counselor who was always willing to spend a little extra time with his students. Although Mr. Engstli passed away in November, his memory will continue to live in the minds of John Marshall students. 13 Mr. Miller Mischal has seen many senior classes come and go. but the Class of 1983 will be very special for him. for it will be his last. A fixture of JMH since his arrival in 1969. Mr. Mischal is retiring after a 30 year career in what he calls, an educational adventure. For 13 years, he was an assistant principal here at JMH. and it is fitting that he was the senior principal this year. We will remember him as the mellow, friendly person who was always willing to see the student s point of view. His door was always open to any and all who needed help. But what we all will probably most remember about him are his P.A. announcements. which were always a welcome break from classroom routine. The future classes at Marshall will be at a loss for never having known such a fine man as Our Mr. Mischal. 14 SENIORS MESSAGE TO THE EFNTOP CUSS Success 18 probably one goal which every member of our senior class desires. Success, however, my mean something different to each of us. nevertheless, most of us would agree that kapoir.es8 and harmony are important by-products of what would be considered being successful. Hone fully, our years at John Marshall have been happy ones and have taught us the importance of living in harmony with others. To some extent, our high school experience has shaped our perception of success and has provided us with the opportunity of acquiring some or those tools needed to meet life's i'orthcomina challenges β€’ β–  V successfully. flow that our years in high school are ending, We must take, all that we have learned, in class and out, with us as we go on to the next stage of life.. The riends that we have made, the activities in which ve have participated, and also the discipline which vr have developed within ourselves are part of what we take with us. They are so e of the important aspects of our development and of our ideals. Enough each of us has a different idea of success, no natter what it is. each one of us con achieve it, Our diplomas are already one important mark of that success. They symbolize a most important achievement. They tell us β€” and the world β€” that we are ready to participate in society as successful adults. How it is up to us. believing in ourselves, to continue reaching for our desired goals, and grasp success. One of the factors that makes A.P. Biology different from regular biology is the hands-on experience with live animals, such as chickens, rats and FROGS. On the day of the frog sacrifice, a few lucky amphibians were smuggled to the safety of the valley without the knowledge or consent of Mrs. Jackson, the biology teacher. The brains and spinal cords of the remaining frogs were destroyed and the dissection began. Perhaps today the rescued frogs still live in the marshy, green world of croaking creatures. Froglegs anyone? I wonder if Kermit started this way?” 52 Don't worry guys we'll get you out of here some how! Ringling Brothers here we come! VOLLEYBALL LADY LAWYERS SPIKE EVEN Have you ever wondered who those peppy, enthusiastic. and hardworking young ladies, usually found in the school gym at approximately 2:15 are? If your guess is right, it's THE 1982 GIRL'S VOLLEYBALL TEAM. The team consists of sixteen members, four of whom are seniors. They are under the direction of Miss Linda Beebe, who has been coaching the team since late August. The girls finished the season with an outstanding record of 11-9. According to Miss Beebe. There have not been any snags in the team's cooperation. Everyone has worked well together. as a close knit family. This is unusual, because so often there is someone who doesn't want to cooperate: but not with this group. Working with Miss Beebe this season as captains were Linda Honey and Shareefah Thornton. When asked for a comment on the 1982 season Linda Honey replied. I feel we are family. We stick together through thick and thin win or lose. We are number 1. Shareefah adds. Good season! Losses weren't because we weren't good.” One problem the team had this year was lack of spectator interest. Miss Beebe states, One reason for the lack of spectators was game scheduling. Student support is important β€” it enables the team to play better. Linda Honey adds. In the future, it would be nice if spectators showed more interest. After all it's FREE! Behind this vigorous group of girls is a hardworking and determined coach. Miss Beebe. She keeps the ball bouncing with this team. When asked for a description of the coach. Shareefah said, All around she is a good good coach. Compared to other coaches, she is ranked among the top. She taught us skills and got us conditioned. Most of all. she taught us to play and have fun. This is how any extra-curricular sport should be played. Although volleyball is not as popular a sport as football or basketball, it offers an exciting hour of fast action. When the John Marshall Basketball team lost a heart-breaking game to Valley Forge 63-62 in the state playoffs they ended a season that started out promising. While most teams would have been overjoyed with a 16-6 season record the Lawyers were disappointed. Before the season the Cleveland Plain Dealer ranked the Lawyers as the second best team in the Greater Cleveland Area. This forecast was based on the abundance of extremely tall, experienced players. In Basketball lingo the big men are called β€œaircraft carriers”, so the Lawyers must have made the U.S. Navy drool. Led by All-Senate players 6 -8” Center John Ginley and 6-7 Forward George Rucker, both seniors, the frontcourt also consisted of seniors Andra Johnson (6-9) and 6-6 Tyrone Robinson and junior 6-9 Tim Richardson. This gave the Lawyers one of the tallest, most experienced baselines in the state. The backcourt was led by senior guards 6-3 Eugene β€œSnake” Davis and Bryan Jones who provided the necessary quickness to balance against the gigantic frontline. Although the early elimination from the playoffs was a disappointment the 57-56 victory over arch-rival John F. Kennedy and the 63-62 win over nemesis John Adams along with the honors reaped upon John Ginley and George Rucker were accomplishments for Head Coach Ron Alpine and everyone else to be proud of. John Ginley. a 6’-8” Center, transferred from Lakewood High School to Marshall for his senior year and quickly became a dominating force in the Lawyer lineup, once scoring 36 points in a game. George Rucker, a 6'-7 Forward, made the switch from Center this year without a hitch. All members, long and short distance runners, spent everyday after school practicing on the underground track. Their hard work paid off. The team was able to dominate many of the teams against whom they competed. They also succeeded in breaking standing records. Although the team did not have as many girls as the coaches would have liked, equal time and dedication was spent to help make them winners. Fortunately, there was a sizable number of young men on the team, making it possible to come out on top without overworking the runners. The team, composed mainly of seniors, also represented JMH in outdoor track, giving their all in the pole vault, long jump, and shot put. along with hurdles and sprinting. During these times of school budget cuts causing sports to be dropped, it is exciting to see a new athletic activity being added. Most of the young men have participated in intramurals and have spent their free time practicing in the gym. This year their hard work will pay off as they get the opportunity to display their skills in competition with other schools in the area. Their season will begin March 18th. Hopefully this will be the first step in the expansion of the John Marshall sports program. Front row: Henry Hall. Terry Williams. Fred Leach Back row: Anthony Ferguson. The students jumped in groups of four to six people for a total of three hours. Each student obtained sponsors and the money raised was donated to the American Heart Association. Besides receiving a certificate for participation, Marshall Marshall's persevering jumpers contributed much, in a spirit of caring, to their own physical well-being and the heart needs” of others. 78 ABOVE: Senior Dave Dewar and friend show their support for JMH football. Among our early problems was adjusting to a new advisor just as our 1st deadline was upon us. Added to this were the headaches stemming from such things as misplaced copy and untaken photos. Despite these obstacles, we managed to pull together as a team and produce what we hope will be a memorable reflection of our senior year. We would like to extend our appreciation to Davor Studios for out first ever full color senior section; to Mr. John Urian who with his caring and humorous ways saw us through our β€œcrisis”; to Mr. Nielson for his initial encouragement and to Miss Baran who so graciously stepped in as advisor to oversee the completion of this book; and finally to photographer Scott Vinick and the rest of the staff without whom this yearbook would not have become a reality. With Best Wishes. Co-editors C$OCU New staff members gather together for a crash course in photo cropping. Editors Lisa Richardson and Laura Rood begin to crack under deadline pressure. 112 8arb Cornelius seeks revenge upon Rosanne Carey over a disput ed layout. Arnell Black and Shareefah Thornton Annette Stevens puts her typing skills to the test to make a deadline. Sports Editor Neil Sullivan now resides at Crazy Acres due to a breakdown he experienced just minutes after our final page was finished. THE COLLECTION Original poems, stories, and artwork created by students are published annually in the literary magazine, the Collection. The project is totally student operated, under the supervision of Mr. Ken Latkovic. in his tenth year as advisor.
