While traveling the road to achieve our goals as students. we've encountered hardships, obstacles and occasional tears - but more often there has been hope, courage and laughter. Perhaps most important are the lasting friendships and memories born in the “hallowed halls of JMH during the past few years. We’ll always cherish these moments, for they’ve become a part of us. And now. as we stand on the threshold of the future, we take one last opportunity to look back, and remember . . . You mean you don't know that? queries Mr. Kubach 4 Is it gonna be a home run? Vesta M. Kelly Teamwork is an important ingredient at John Marshall that helps to unite the student body and raise school spirit. Our football, basketball, and volleyball teams provide the excitement and entertainment for the student body, and fellow Marshallites unite behind them. The result-evidence of a winning spirit and attitude at JMH. Wendell Fields and Lisa Mann discover that working together they can solve the toughest problems. Teamwork and unity are not only confined to the classroom, but rather extend to all spheres of school life. The degree of unity among the members of a team is directly proportional to the won-loss record of the team. Our JMH cagers stand as a symbol of successful teamwork. From left they are Chris Jackson. We finally reached our peak! 9 Arnette Jones. Robin Brown and Julia Acoff look like they're enjoying their work Constance Thompson takes drill team practice very seriously Faces of the survivors We came to this school as sophomores, ready to enter a new world of friends and learning experiences Instead, we were greeted by utter chaos, confusion and closed doors m a year when the Cleveland Teachers Union decided to strike. . Being dazed and confused over the situation, we had to go along with the strike, and therefore lost a whole month and a half of school. School finally opened and went on as it normally had in the past, until we were informed of an extened school year, with a loss of holiday vacations. In our junior year, although we lost the bulk of our class to the Class of '80 in the form of early graduates, we continued to struggle and survive as a unified body: through the dawn of the busing era and the dusk of an eleven week school strike. Despite the setbacks v e continued to fight back . . . eager to learn and eager to succeed. Busing continued, and it accounted for the fact that the start of our senior year was delayed for three weeks. But we remained as one. with a great feeling of unity within us. We were destined to make the Class of '81 the best John Marshall had ever seen. We may not have been the biggest senior class this school has ever had. but in some cases quality certainly is better than quantity. One would have to say we were probably the strongest class ever to graduate from Marshall. We survived all the slings and arrows the people could throw at us; including the initial phase of busing and the longest strikes in school history. We. as a unified team, will be better equipped to endure the tensions and hardships after high school. We are saying goodbye to John Marshall in this year of 1981. but we are leaving this great school a little stronger and a little wiser knowing that ... WE SURVIVED! • I’m no longer a Fighting Eagle, but I'm now proud to say I'm a lawyer? Arthur Card knows what it means to work hard play hard, and survive. The Lawyers finished the season with a 2-6-2 mark. 10 The 1980-81 volleyball team successfully survived the season and advanced to the sectionals. Representatives from the team are. Julie Holcker and Tracy Meng successfully survived the cold during the JFK game. Jeff Kalista. Marla Robinson, and Kathy Joiluck survived the experience of being known as Yearbookies.'' 11 Topsy- AJni High School Years Our High School years have been reminiscent of a ride on the Gemini at Cedar Point. The topsy-turvy time spent at JMH will always have a place in our hearts. Among the oddities that we have gone through . . . having, after three years an almost normal school year ... the wearing of our clothes-tearing I.D.’s ... the first-year tradition of having a basketball homecoming . . . our color coded lunch tags which were needed to eat our artificially colored food ... our version of the Gestapo masquerading as security guards and teachers ... our beloved math teacher trying to convince us of the importance of taking calculus when we are going to be ditch diggers . . . living through the longest teachers' strike in history ... but better still, living through 11 weeks of soap operas . . . having the unique distinction of being counted as either black or other.. . sweating through summer classes and watching as the temperature rose, the clothes disappear . . . but most of all living through smelling the many and varied experiments which the Chemistry I class failed with. But through all the topsy-turvy events that have happened during our high school years, we have all shared in a little bit of humor which has made our stay here most enjoyable. Posiflwelu 11 MO Admittance without a Le al Pass. 12 We've made it! Though our stay here at JMH was brief: we can all look back and reflect on the happy times and invaluable friends which will have an impact on us for the rest of our lives. We will always remember the rough and unstable times we went through, but we will also remember the way our class united and refused to be discouraged, showing our peers that we were unstoppable. We have gone through many happy times together over the last three years, and although some of us have known each other but a short time, we were able to unite as one. As we take a last, lingering look at our beloved John Marshall High School we say good-bye to the school that has played an important role in shaping our future. And we. the class of 1981 bid farewell to JMH and look forward to whatever lies ahead for us in the years to come. 14 Yesterday is a memory, and tomorrow is a dream . . . but today well lived makes every yesterday good to remember . . . and every tomorrow a dream come true. 15 Acknowledgement Of A Job Well Done They enjoy meeting new faces and undertaking new adventures . . . they are people who choose to enrich the quality of life by giving . . . and best of all. they can be found right here at JMH. The members of our faculty strive to make our scholastic experience a little more interesting and a lot more enjoyable. There are some who choose to give just a little more of their time; they are involved with the students and participate in many activities outside of the classroom. We take this opportunity to acknowledge the tremendous contributions of four of our very dedicated faculty members. At first glance, seeing her small 5'3” frame, one would hardly expect the powerhouse personality that students around JMH respectfully know as Mrs. Florence Hall. Mrs. Hall is dedicated to the success of the student at JMH. In addition to teaching English, she is serving in her rookie year as advisor of Student Council and Excutive Advisory Committee. and third year as advisor of the Cheerleaders. She attends every athletic event with her cheerleaders and is frequently seen in the building after normal school hours, when everyone else has gone home. Described by her colleagues as a hard-work er. Mrs. Hall is one of the few staff members that cannot say no to any students’ request. and insists on getting the job done. With the enthusiasm she generates. Mrs. Hall provides motivation to both students and teachers alike, and is an inspiration to us all. Dedicated, enthusiastic, willing to work with students and teachers alike on almost any project - that’s Mr. Paul Johanni. The bearded psychology teacher communicates well with his students and expresses his love for teaching by making class fun and interesting for his students. Games, filmstrips, and experiments are utilized to break the monotony of book work. Mr. Johanni has initiated many projects at JMH. including the Close-Up program that makes an annual trip to Washington. D.C. He also plays a role in planning fundraisers, like Almost Anything Goes, and has served as tennis coach at JMH. In his spare time. Mr. Johanni enjoys tennis, volleyball, and woodworking. Mrs. Joy Smith, head of the English Department, is a devoted professional, both in the classroom and out. In addition to being involved in the Academic Enrichment Program with the College of Wooster. Mrs. Smith is also chairman of the Staff-Led Team. (SLT). here at JMH. and a student recruiter for her alma mater. Marietta College. Mrs. Smith's positive outlook is reflected in her daily activities. An excellent classroom teacher, she has often been known to say. It can be done! She is generous with her time, with both her students and fellow faculty members, and is always willing to help solve a problem. acknowledged one teacher. Mrs. Smith is very dedicated-both as a colleague and a friend. another teacher noted. Mrs. Smith enjoys traveling and reading, and is an avid Browns fan. She's a well-rounded person — successful in all aspects of life.” Mr. Kenneth Kubach reaches many students in his role as teacher, chairman of the Math Department, and through his involvement in high school athletics. He is involved with the Academic Enrichment Program, and is also a member of the Staff-Led Team. He is very dedicated as head of the Math Department - he’s always interested in what his teachers are doing and is a constant supervisor, allowing his teachers to do a better job. observed a fellow colleague. Students in his math classes will always remember his constant reminders - It's on your notebook! In the past ten years. Mr. Kubach has probably attended more athletic events than any other faculty member, as a spectator, a player, and a coach. Over the years he has served as both assistant coach and head coach of the soccer team, and assistant baseball coach. His most recent involvement has been as statistician for the varsity football and basketball teams, and the girl's basketball team. Mr. Kubach's hobbies, when time permits, include Nordic skiing, hiking, and camping. Administration William S. February 13th. our own John Marshall High School was featured on the popular television talk show The Afternoon Exchange. During this broadcast Lawyers were shown modeling the latest teen fashions, asking various questions of the show's two famous hosts, and giving their opinions on the busing situation. This show proved to be a great motivational force in our school and exemplified the true Marshall spirit to an audience of over 250,000 viewers of Northeastern Ohio. Students forward questions to Wilma Smith and Fred Griffith of the Afternoon Exchange. Below: Fred and Wilma chat with star-stricken Lawyers. Sophomore. We tried to approach the season with a positive point of view and create a family atmosphere. said Coach Al Valenzisi. As the season progressed. I believe we achieved that goal. The Lawyers strong points were basically defensive. The line, led by co-captains Brian Senior and Arthur Card as well as linebackers Bill Swindell and Rodney Barnett, was highly effective against all teams played. Offensively, the team tended to rely on its passing game led by quarterback Bill Turner and receivers Robert Dawson. Stanley Brown. Antuan Robinson, and Eddie Dureillo. No offense can work without an offensive line and the Marshall offensive line consisted of Brian Senior. Robert Sopshire. Matthew Kenney and Robert McDonough. The Lawyers ground attack was made up of fullback Bill Swindell and tailbacks Antuan Robinson. Daood Thornton and Rodney Barnett. Managers Carla Bates. William Phillips. and Shareefah Thornton greatly aided the team. “I'm sorry that we didn’t win more games, but I am very pleased with the way we played.” remarked Coach Valenzisi. The last few seasons didn’t provide the players with the practice they needed, but all in all. the Lawyers had a respectable season, and look forward to next year. m First Row R Peterson. C. Duke. Marshall's Junior Varsity players will return for another season after ending this year with a 6-3-1 record. With over 180 points scored, this year’s team was one of Marshall’s best. Offensively the team relied on its passing game. The six shutouts proved that the defensive players were always on the ball. The game against Adams seemed to have been the most exciting. The first game against Adams was lost by a score of 13-0. but the second time the two teams met the Lawyers won 28-0. Naturally it's a team effort anytime a game is won but. there were a few team members that must be commended for their outstanding work. Quarterbacks Bobby Lockett and Brian Cloud led the team on to many victories. While Jeff Spear, with his punting abilities helped to earn needed extra points. 88 3A Kurt Gandy runs for a first down. The girls were defeated in a tournament held at Avon Lake, but rallied back to rout Lake-wood in the next game. They came from behind in a game against Westlake, to place third in the tournament. Contributing to the team’s effort in the tournament were seniors Alleatha Bell. Sue Malloran. Diane Butler. Lisa Fields and Sharon Parks. “Alleatha Bell, from JFK. turned into a good hitter and server. She has improved about 200% from last year. said coach Linda Beebe. Sue Halloran is viewed as a very aggresive player. “She's a very good forearm passer.” commented coach Beebe. Sue's ability also extends to setting. Diane Butler was a very enthusiastic player. She’s an excellent server in the clutch, Coach Beebe stated. When the team was in a bind, Diane came in and was able to save them with her effective serve. Senior Lisa Fields is playing this year, after not having played since tenth grade. Coach Beebe singled out hitting and serving as Lisa's strong points. Sharon Parks, the team’s sixth starter was our forearm pass specialist. Miss Beebe observed. (First Row): Lisa Fields. Karen Smith. Priscilla Cooper. Damita Harden. Tammy Chait. Sue Halloran. Our Victorious Lawyers The 1980-81 Varsity Basketball Team played the best basketball of any team ever at John Marshall. The fast-breakmg Lawyers finished the season with 17 wins and 2 losses. The only losses came at the hands of John Adams; a 71-62 game played at Marshall and an 85-74 game played at South High. The starting five players were: Dave Colbert, (center). Harold Anderson and Kevin Penn, (forwards), and Dwayne Parker and John Hopkins, (guards). Three of the five starters were captains: Dave Colbert. Harold Anderson. and Kevin Penn. These individuals did their best to help bring the team to victories. Others contributing their best efforts were seniors Bill Turner and Kirk Phillips, junior Andre DiMatteo and sophomore John Hill. Dave Colbert. Kevin Penn, and Harold Anderson made the All South Senate Team, while Dave Colbert was voted the most valuable player of the South Senate teams. Dave Colbert’s performance against Central Catholic, scoring 39 points, broke the school record for most points scored in a game. Kevin Penn had the season's most important shot. It came against East Tech with the Lawyers trailing by one point, and three seconds left. Kevin hit a jump shot from 30 feet to pull out a victory for Marshall. And last but not least, the coach that helped make it all possible. Mr. Al Reinke. His undying dedication and perseverance towards John Marshall’s talented Lawyers will always be remembered by the class of '81! The game of Chess has been played seriously since the nineteenth century. Playing well is not a requirement to enjoying the game, only the will to win. The Marshall Chess Club plays for the excitement and intensity of the game. Chess is a game which exercises the mental faculties of an individual. It increases a person’s ability to memorize and visualize. A good chess player can visualize a position seven moves ahead of the one on the board, and he can analyze lines and variations subsequent to that position. Mr. Klepacz is the director of the Chess Club, and it is due to his efforts that we have one. Students are encouraged to complete all school work before playing chess. This year Mr. Klepacz intends to enter the club in competition. 2) Colleen Williams and Glen Eatman check out another board. 3) Robert Murnan and Anthony 8enson battle it out in an interesting opening. Sonya Penn keeps her eyes on the book and her fingers on the keys. 150 Right: Dave Berry demos-trates a concept of Modern-day Physics.
