The teachers' strike, affected JMH students in many ways. While some considered it a vacation of sorts, most feared it would be academically injuring. For all of us, the strike represented a period of boredom and uncertainty. Once back in school. The students were faced with the challenge of making the desegregation process run smoothly. New implementations, such as lock - outs and identification cards, made adjustment to our final year particularly difficult. Despite these new procedures, we as seniors survived, and can now look back on our time here, and realize that what we once thought so chaotic was a time of learning and growth. The Vanguard staff decided that the Cleveland Zoo would be the perfect place to release some anxieties and have lots of fun. Along with the seniors of John Marshall, Julius Caesar with his Roman warriors, and Clint Eastwood, complete with cowboy hat and pistol, just happened to make an appearance. And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long 1 stood And looked down one as far as 1 could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair. And having perhaps the better claim. Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same. And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-I took the one less traveled by. And that has made all the difference. if. The eye's a better teacher And more willing than the ear. And council is confusing But example's always clear. The best of all the teachers Are those who live their creeds For to see good put in action Is what everybody needs. I can soon learn to do it If you let me see it done; I can watch my hands in action But your tongue too fast may run. And the council you are giving May be very fine and true. But I'd rather get my lesson By observing what you do. Written by and in memory of Carol Murman Starre The Collection is an annual literary magazine of poems, stories, and drawings by students. Orgin-ally called the Mosaic, it was once a mini-course which was dropped until interested students reestablished it. The Collection is totally student operated and has been advised by Mr. Kenneth Latkovie for seven years. The Collection presently consists of fifteen staff members who meet two days a week. I t row 1 to r: Advisor Mr. Latkovie and James Miller 2nd row I to 4: Bonnie Beck, Janet Irvin, Vivica Anderson. Arnette Jones. The art department is geared to bringing out the best ability in the eager young artists that elect art in their schedules. In past years, the art department has been fortunate in the number of Marshall art students that have won Regional and National Awards and Scholarships. Sue Cehring perfects her latest masterpiece. 46 Kim Kincaid displays hrs artwork. 47 Media Center The Media Center, better known as the library, is open throughout the school day to all Marshall students. The Center provides books, films, and magazines, as well as friendly and helpful librarians. Librarian Mr. Link overlooks library activities. Librarian Mrs. Henderson poses for a picture. Guidance Office The Guidance Office was established to help students make decisions about their education, their careers, and their future. Every day interested and helpful counselors are avail able to meet the needs of the students. Guidance counselor Miss Pendergrass assists a student. Guidance Office aides DecDce Brooks and Millie Gabriel. In a time of constant change and difficulty, we have endured. Making the best of all opportunities available to us, the last three years represent endless hours of working and studying, giving the good times shared with friends and extra-special meaning. Although Commencement night is the end of our high school days, we must remember that it also represents the beginning of new goals and achievements. We will continue to work to reach our fullest potential and accomplish the high standards we have set for ourselves. As we strive toward excellence in the future, we will remember the support and guidance of our advisors and homeroom teachers. Without their help, we could never have reached our goals. To them, we extend our sincere appreciation for their constant concern and advice. Sr. Class H.R. White - Lawyer's Football For the second year in a row the JMH gridders came up against insurmountable odds. In 1978 the Lawyers overcame adversity and finished with an impressive winning record. This season however, the ill effects of both busing and the teachers' strike proved to be too much, as the Lawyers ended the season with a poor 1-5 overall record. Led by Cocaptains Bob Smith and Charles Lewis, the Big Red Machine showed the potential to be a winning team, but were unable to gain a victory until the season finale versus Rhodes. 1979 was to have been the first year for the gridders to play in the newly aligned South Senate along with Hast Tech, South, John F. Kennedy, John Adams, and Rhodes. The Lawyers were expected to be a contender, but the senate schedule was cut down to only one game by the strike, that being a shutout over Rhodes, 19-0. 92 Arthur Card (72) and a Lawyer lineman make a tackle Bob Smith (75) pursues a Rocky River ball carrier. The team ran races of two and one-half miles on various terrain. The team finished their season with a strong sixth place in the sectionals. Tim Carlyn qualified for the district meet for his third consecutive year. Juan Quirarte, a junior, also placed high enough in the sectionals to qualify him to run in the district meet. They also finished a close fourth out of a field of twenty teams in the Coaches' Classic meet at Edgewater Park early in the seaaon. Although the team will be losing six seniors, four of which were starters, there is a promise for the coming season. There is a great deal to be thankful for as the girls were able to finish their season with an 18-7 record, including games played during the teachers strike. It was a very gratifying year in spite of all the adverse conditions, commented Coach Jacobson. Although the team was made up of players from both John F. Kennedy and John Marshall, the girls were able to work as one unit. Hard work paid off as the team finished with an excellent 11-4 record. The Lawyer wrestling team was not able to show its true talents this year as a result of lack of practice and the shortness of the season. With what time they did have to practice as a team they made the most of it by working extra hard after school. But nothing could replace the time they had been deprived of during the strike—this was shown in their record of 0-4. Even with these obstacles, Seniors Jim Kerr and John Gulasey were able to make a fine showing this season; John with a record of 6-2 was a district qualifier, and Jim Kerr with an excellent record of 13-3 grabbed third place at the state finals in Columbus in the 105 pound weight class. With a strong finish at the end of the year, the Lawyers qualified for the Districts at Baldwin-Wallace College. After defeating Midpark and Lincoln West, the Lawyers lost a hard fought game to St. Ignatius in the Semi-final round 71-62. We have reason to be proud of our Junior Varsity basketball team because of the outstanding job they did in this year of turmoil. The two-mile relay team of Glenn Hasek, Juan Quirarte, Brian Barkdoll, and Tim Carlyn placed eighth in the finals. The indoor season ended with a third place in the Marshall Relays, and fifth place in the Senate. Coach by Ken Kubach, the team was only able to play one game this year due to the work stoppage. In a hard fought battle against North Olmsted the Lawyers were defeated 8 0. Sports Enthusiasts Student Student Council got off to a slow start this year due to the re-election of officers, but that didn't affect the quality of leadership. Our officers and executive board proved that perseverance pays off. Their combined efforts turned a chaotic situation into another successful year. Under the direction of Mr. Peter A. joniak, Student Council developed into a close-knit group devoted to a common cause. They worked to make this past year the best ever at John Marshall. Spring Formal Spring Formal sponsored by the Student Council was held in the JMH cafeteria on March 14, 1980, from 7:30 to 10:30 P.M. The band performing was Champagne. Bob Smith Despite the many obstacles at the outset of the school year, the dedicated (?) members of the yearbook staff worked diligently to make certain that the yearbook would come out on time. The leadership and perserverance of the editors proved to be a guiding light for everyone, and I would like to thank each of them. To Tina Rzucidlo. Faculty Editor, whose constant cries of That's it. 1 don't care anymore! were a source of inspiration for all, especially before a deadline To Marge Kennedy, Senior Editor, whose gutter mouth expressed the sentiments that everyone else was too decent to say. To Peggy Sheboy. Academics Editor, who couldn’t wait for her pages to be finished so that she would not have to stay in the Vanguard Room another minute. To her we owe our feeling of togetherness. To Bob Zegarac, Activities Editor, whose combination of true dedication and humor provided comic relief to hectic days. To Gerald Walter, Sports Editors, whose sphinx-like presence added to the hilarity of meeting (?) deadlines. To the invisible Mary Roshetko. Ads Editor, who was never in the Vanguard Room when I was; thankfully, she always brought results. To Graphics Editor Bob Smith and Photographic Coordinator Rick Grospitch for scaring the § %!! out of us by waiting a bit too long to turn anything in. Any remarks made to them were in the line of duty. And finally, to Mr. Nielson, who, as rookie advisor, was lost from the beginning He still is. A final thanks to the editors and all other staff members The Vanguard Staff after a hard day. 1)6 Linda Zanow Editor-in-Chief Linda Zanow, Editor-in-Chief Tina Rzucidlo.
