JOHN MARSHALL HIGH SCHOOL 3952 West 140 Street Cleveland OH 44111 THEME 1 FACULTY 17 SENIORS 47 SPORTS 87 ACTIVITIES 115 ADS AND PATRONS 145 REACHING FOR TOMORROW It is hard to say goodbye to a friend. We came to Marshall as sophomores who knew little of what was to be expected of us. Hut we soon learned and got to know our school. We shared in each honor bestowed upon it. and also in each disgrace. Yet still Marshall stands as a friend to whom we will always belong. Those we met there influenced our lives and enabled us to grow Sure there were hassles, but we also had much fun like any other relationship with a friend. Somehow we have made it to graduation, leaving behind high school, knowing that the faculty and students wish our class the best for what lies ahead. We. the class of '79, remember all the joys and sorrows and many friends we made as we say our farewell to John Marshall High 4 What lies behind you. and what lies before you are tiny matters compared to what lies within you . . . Leaving Marshall stirs different feelings within each of us. ranging from uncertainty to anticipation. We are unsure of what lies ahead. Will we fulfill all of our dreams and ambitions? Can we live up to the expectations of those around us? Through knowledge we have gained assurance in our abilities, opening new doors to future opportunities. Among the most precious things we carry with us are the friendships we have made during our school years We will all be taking different directions, and eventually be on our own. but we hope never to lose touch with the closest of these friends because who wc arc. who we become is determined by those who love us. S LAWYERS AT LEARNING As Ihc students of John Marshall finally began their delayed school year, their minds became boggled by the mass confusion. When this chaotic life began to settle down, the teachers shattered their serenity by trying to cram their brains full of a wide range of diverse and debatable ideas. The students' minds became muddled by the endless shuffling of facts and figures thrown at them. After a short time, however, the students became used to this cruel punishment and learned to accept challenges with enthusiasm. ? It seemed that when we finally got our lives adjusted to this unusual schedule of toil, our years of schooling at John Marshall came to a close Now we can look back on the simplicity of high school life with nostalgia, and we realize that we will have enough new experiences to overcome our fears of what is to be. LAWYERS ON THE JOB When the 2:15 bell rings, noi all students go home to recuperate after a hard day of school Many go on to a hard night's work Jobs cut down on much free time and sacrifices are made to accommodate responsibilities. JMII students hold various jobs cooks, waiters, gas station attendants, clerks, cashiers, among others. Some students even arrange for all their classes to be in the first few periods of the day so that they can work a fulltime job. All this time devoted to working is not without its rewards. Cashing one's paycheck helps to lessen the burden of the working student Afterschool jobs arc not the only type of work for JMH students. There arc also those special class projects and everyday homework assignments that keep them occupied in their so-called free time. n LAWYERS AT LEISURE Graduation is a goal. In achieving this goal, one not only acquires a diploma, but learns to reach out to new and challenging aspects of life. Of the many memories, the most cherished linger in our hearts, knowing that we can still be friends. 13 cnoois 10 oe ciosea loaay mini PuPil. • ' . % 'V tmr°a =«- JSL open, bul ft. You should be proud of this achievement for it will be one of the milestones of your life It had been said that education is the key to a better life. It opens the doors to opportunity. When we came here wc knew that yesterday was a dream and tomorrow a vision. As we leave wc realize that today is a reality and tomorrow's vision is one of hope. Wc will remember our years here at John Marshall long after wc graduate; for they will represent the most important years of our youth. Our diplomas will be a constant reminder of our twelve year goal, wc strived so hard to achieve. Now we must REACH out and work towards even higher goals. Without the endless support and effort of our advisors and homeroom teachers, we would not have been able to REACH out with our fullest potential and accomplish the goals wc set for ourselves so long ago; wc will always be eternally grateful to them for their never ending concern. FRIDAYS, SATURDAYS ARE LONELY IN SENATE Despite a shortened season, due to the Cleveland teachers’ strike, the JMH gridders turned in an impressive 3-1-1 season. Led by co-captains Joe Plc ia and Andrew MeGrew, the Big Red Machine displayed a great deal of potential, losing only to archrival St. Ignatius. Each week the players prepared for an opponent. not knowing when the strike would end. Head Coach Vic Hanchuk, with twenty three years of Held experience behind him. found this football season most disappointing. He felt it was a shame that the team was never able to show its full ability. Coach Hanchuk stated. Lessons arc learned in football that arc not taught anywhere else. There is teamwork, getting along together, helping each other, and overcoming adversity. Departing seniors who contributed to Marshall’s winning season were Joe Plc ia. SPORTS ENTHUSIAST Enthusiasm of the fans ran high at the football games this season, despite the fact that there were only four regular games and a game played as a scrimmage against West Tech Sitting in the stands and being a part of the cheering faces with their cries of excitement could not help but make each spectator feel the strong sense of togetherness that comes from rooting on the home team. Total involvement in the action is on each and every face in the crowd. 91 VOLLEYBALL With a short season the Marshall Volleyball Team rushed to get in matches to prepare for the sectional tournament. Joniak, meetings were (almost) always run smoothly. The common insanity of all four officers gave life to otherwise dull meetings and provided comic relief to the dozing homeroom representatives. OFFICERS Secretary — Yvette Bolia Vice President — Terry Hampton Although the elections were detained until fall, this year's officers rushed to make the best of what was left of the year Promotions such as dressing in the fashions of the 1950's, and wearing signs brought attention to the team whose combined efforts made the student council of 79 a very successful one. Treasurer Cheryl l.awko 117 This season. John Marshal! was unfortunately afflicted with one of the worst epidemics known to a student body. This dread disease was highly contagious and feared by faculty and students alike. It was, of course, apathy. Because of the delayed start of our school year, and the cancellation of many of our football games, we had very few pep rallies. Those we did have were poorly attended and suffered from a severe lack of spirit. Fortunately, however, our JV and Varsity Cheerleaders, Color Guard, Lawycrettes, Pep Band, and team players did their best to cure us of this illness, and succeeded in bringing the students to their feet with pep and enthusiasm. CHRISTMAS DANCE On December 22, 1978 the Student Council brought a little bit of Saturday Night Fever to the John Marshall Cafeteria by sponsoring the Christmas Disco Dance. From 2:30 to 4:00 our students were Tilled with Friday Afternoon Fever by the sounds of the Bee Gees, Donna Summer. The Village People and other popular artists. The dance was emceed by Dan Cohen, a disc jockey who played his records and took requests. Although ticket sales had a very slow start, the members of student council really worked hard and pushed the sales up high by the day of the dance. Because of the fact that we had only one day for Christmas vacation, most of the students were filled with apathy, but this dance helped gel everyone out of their slump and was a big success. This success was due to the organizational talent of the officers and the hard work of the Disco Dance committee. Paul Harrigan It) Thomas lladdc. Editor-In-Chief. At the outset of this school year, whether we would be able to put together a 1979 Vanguard appeared unsure. With the teacher’s strike and the confusion over busing, only the persistence of some hard working members of the staff who met over the summer allowed us to meet our color deadline. Being prepared for succeeding deadlines resulted from the dedication of photographer Bob Paulin who never failed to be available for last minute shots and who excellently filled a key position. The cooperation of Mr. Neilson and Interpreter photographer Andy Fernando was a great help to us. Much appreciated assistance was also provided by Bob Harrigan. who designed a major portion of the art work and Scott Shook who designed the cover and all the division pages. All of these aspects were coordinated with the help of faculty moderator, Ms. Baran. whose home was our meeting place during the time that school was closed. Ripcho Studios went out of their way to develop and print our pictures. I again wish to thank all the editors and members of the yearbook staff for their aid and cooperation.
