It is responsible for all rallies, for keeping all signs inside and outside up to date, and for all elections such as those for Homecoming Queen and for Student Council Officers. The spirit of Christmas is boosted at John Marshall when the members of Student Council give each homeroom a chance to compete for the best door decorations. The members of Student Council enjoy taking charge of school dances, assemblies, and special programs. Mr. Peter Joniak is Student Council Advisor. WINTER FORMAL This year’s iheme for Winter Formal was Beyond the Lost Horizon . This dance is one of Student Council’s most important activities of the school year. On Friday. October 29, 1976. Elaine Rivera was crowned Queen at the Homecoming Rally. A Homecoming King was also chosen. Bill Bradshaw. The theme for this year’s Homecoming Dance was Sweet Memories, and featured the band “Stairway.” A Homecoming Queen Elaine Rivera at halftime, escorted by King Rill Bradshaw and Father. Under the direction of Ms. Kinzer, precision drill performances are entertaining for all. The Varsity Cheerleaders shout out spirit for the crowds and teams at rallies and games. COLOR GUARDS Though the 1976 Marching Band is one of Ihe smallest bands in Marshall’s history, it is certainly not lacking in sound or spirit. It performs during halftime at every football game. It is quite evident that the band members work hard to maintain quality in performance. The Oompa-DoIIs do a specialty number at halftime, adding a distinctive charm to the show. The color guard is also an important part of the band. They display the flags during pregame and twirl guns during halftime. A The 1976-77 Marching Band performing their half-time show. Hours of practice go into the sounds of the JMH bands and orchestra. Their annual performances present a variety of music to please every taste. THE SYMPHONIC ORCHESTRA Under direction of Mr. Ralph Pfunder, the JMH Orchestra performs at the Fall and Spring Concerts, and at the Senior Commencement. Many of the talented students are members of the All City Orchestra. THE MARSH-MELLOS Directed by Miss Mary Eileen Fogarty, these 22 select singers are the highlight of Christmas and Spring vocal presentations. Their mellow sounds are enjoyed by audiences throughout the city when they arc requested to perform at various community functions. The 1976 Christmas Concert featured all three groups at their finest. The Girls' Glee Club opened the evening with 'Carol of the Bells’, followed by presentations of the Marsh-Mcllows. The Jurymen, and Choir. The Choir’s moving performance of the contemporary piece 'Saul' was a highpoint of the evening. The National Honor Scoctiy recognizes the accomplishments of students who have demonstrated outstanding scholarship, leadership, character, and service at John Marshall. Approximately seven percent of the eleventh and twelfth grade students attain membership in the society. New members were inducted at an assembly in January and were greeted by their parents, teachers, and other National Honor Society members at a reception in the library. Mr. Bienia is the faculty sponsor for the group. National Honor Society officers for the 197b-77 school year are president. Diane Palos; vice-president, Patricia Carlin; secretary, Amy Oakley; and treasurer, Monica Weber. THE MINORITY AFFAIRS CLUB The Black Awareness Group began in September. 1975. In September. 1976. the name was changed to Minority Affairs Club. The specific goals of this club are to increase both the educational community’s awareness of the achievement of blacks both in the fields of education and the arts. The long range plans of this group also include involvement beyond the realms of the educational community. aiding citizens wherever possible. TOMANIC CLUB Teens Of Marshall Aid the Needy In Cleveland dedicate themselves to serving people. Christmas food baskets have become a tradition in the Marshall area. SERVETTES Scrvettcs is a girls service club whose members can be seen ushering at school events and serving refreshments at school related activities. KEY CLUB The Key Club is an International Boys Service Organization for the school and community, sponsored by the West Park Kiwanis. F.T.A Future Teachers of America is an organization of dedicated people. At Open House, its members serve as guides; during the year they tutor other students at Marshall and at various elementary schools in the area. AIDES John Marshall student aides help keep the school moving, and receive service points in return. Office and teacher aides spend most of their time correcting papers, keeping records, or running errands. Library aides assist by shelving books and at the check-out counter, while A.V. aides run movies and filmstrips. Hall sweepers help keep our halls clean during the day. SKI CLUB Mr. Hcffeman’s Ski Club is a group of enthusiastic students who enjoy the snow at Brandywine Ski Center, and at their yearly tnp to the New York slopes. TIMERS The Marlin Timers Club keeps track of swim team records. They serve as spirit boosters to the team. The newspaper has won many awards for its outstanding quality and has been ranked in the upper 10 per cent of the best high school newspapers in the country. A Alicia Benedetto writes an article. GODSPELL “Prepare ye the way of the Lord” was heard throughout the halls of John Marshall last year as the Drama Department presented one of the best shows ever performed on the Marshall stage. This energetic production was entertaining for both audience and performers. Many long hours of hard work by a number of students made the show a tremendous success. A John Nolan in “Godspell. Academic Challenge teams have consistently brought honors to John Marshall. The 1976 team of Emile Anderson. David Cibula, and Jerry Kasick won their match against Walsh Jesuit and Lakeview. GUIDANCE The essence of the Guidance and Counseling Services Office is oriented to the individual student and his individual needs. Principally, the aim of the Counselor is to help the student organize his interests and aptitudes into challenging and attainable educational and vocational goals. This task embraces such basic functions as testing, career counseling, course selection, and personal counseling, which should lead to a diploma and cither military service, college admission, or job placement. Biology introduces students to plants, animals, the human body, genetics, evolution, and ecology. Conservation and Environmental Science deal with man's relationship to his environment. Chemistry is taught within a framework of certain unifying concepts: the chemical bond, structure of matter and the matter-energy relationships, the periodicity of the chemical elements, the mole concept, equilibrium, and chemical notation. Physics is presented not as a mere body of facts, but as a continuing process by which men seek to understand the nature of the physical world. Some areas explored include mechanics, wave motion and sound, magnetism, electricity. and electronics. 50 SOCIAL STUDIES The teachers involved with the JMH Social Studies Department extend their full efforts to provide the student with an overall view of the world. A student taking Vocational studies can select either Shop or Business Math. College Prep pupils take Geometry. Algebra II. Trigonometry, and Advanced Math. Honors students take the same courses one year earlier, and then many take Advanced Placement Calculus in their senior year. The AV Department supplies teachers with equipment, films, and filmstrips, and sends student operators to run the equipment when necessary. The up-to-date bulletin board keeps students and teachers well-informed on various JMH activities. However, reading and study continue to be the primary functions of the school library. Drivers' Educations classes start at the beginning of each semester. Instruction includes classroom study with Mr. Terry Scahel; practice periods in the 16-place mobile trailer simulator unit; and on-the-road experience in late-model cars. AVIATION HIGH SCHOOL Students interested in a career in Aviation are bussed to the Lakefront facility where courses in Parts Control, Flight-line Technology, and Air Mechanics are offered. This is only one of several special learning opportunities offered to Marshall students. Other facilities include study of Marine Trades on board the U.S.C.G. Woodbine, and Vocational Horticulture at R.G.Jones and Washington Park Horticulture Centers. The Art I and Art II classes cover the ground work of basics in drawing, design, and composition with techniques in pencil, pen and tnk. tempera, and clay. Students look forward to displaying their art in the many contests entered throughout the year. The Vocational Art and Advanced Art Courses build toward the professional approach in techniques. experimentation, and creativity. MUSIC Mr Blackman Mr Pfundcr Miss Fogarty John Marshall students have a variety of musical opportunities available as elective courses. They may participate in the Men's Chorus, the Mixed Chorus, or in Girls’ Glee Club. If accepted, students may join the Choir, the Jurymen or the Marsh-Mcl-lows. Students involved in instrumental music have the opportunity to select Cadet Band. Marching and Symphonic Band. Stage Band, or Symphony Orchestra. Select members are asked to represent John Marshall in the All-Ohio Youth Symphony and Band sponsored by the Ohio State Fair and directed by Mr. Blackman. 56 FOREIGN LANGUAGES Mr. Elkins Mr. Molinan Mr Politzcr Mr. Schlucter Miss Tartaglia Broadening cultural perspectives, the John Marshall Foreign Language Department introduces students to new communications skills in the study of French. German, and Spanish. Students are fascinated as the customs, history, and culture of different worlds unfolds in the study of foreign literature. Highlighting the year is Foreign Language Day and induction of new members into the Foreign Language Honor Societies. VOCATIONAL INDUSTRIAL ARTS Technical Education is the study of the tools, materials, and processes used in industry. It provides desirable minimum skills in various trades and develops the ability to work effectively with others. Courses offered in vocational industrial arts include: Elcctrome-chanics, Graphic Arts, Machine Shop, Metallurgy, Carpentry. O.W.E., and D.C.T. The Graphic Arts course is taught by Mr. Joseph Nappier. The course presents organized specialized learning experiences which include theory and laboratory and shop work as they relate to all phases of hot and cold typesetting, layout, darkroom work, platemaking, presswork, offset. letterpress, and bindery. Auto Theory and Auto Mechanics gives students an introduction to the automobile and automotive industry. Emphasis on 'trouble shooting and repair is stressed in the auto shop. 58 TECHNICAL ARTS Drafting I and Drafting II offers students an opportunity to develop the fundamental skills necessary to understand and to make the type of drawings used in industry. Vocational Foods is a popular course for both boys and girls interested in a food service career. The Colonial Kitchen Bake Shoppe entices many faculty members to order weekly goodies. In the Marshall Room students shop for. prepare, and serve luncheons to faculty members and students, then move on to a semester of work and training in the school cafeteria. By their senior year, students gain on-the-job experience in the community in food service employment. Students learn by lecture, laboratory practice, field trips, guest speakers, and volunteering their services in various health agencies in the community. O.W.E. — D.C.T. Occupational Work Experience provides students with a maximum opportunity to develop employable work skills through actual on-the-job experience at a cooperative training establishment. Related job adjustment and remedial instruction is provided by classroom instruction. In spite of the misfortunes, the Lawyers displayed a never-say-die spirit to the very end. Team seniors displaying a tremendous attitude and provided positive leadership all season were: Tri-captains Pat Malloy, Red Jones, and Phil Ta-gliafcrro; Steve Dorsey, Corky Greene, Byron Hardy, Barney Herten, Bill Jones, Henry Jones, Rich Langcl. Kevin McMana-mon, Joe Minarik, Dan Oprea. Don Reines. Bret Schultz, Steve Schultz, Mark Stamatis, Skyler Timko, Rich Walsh, Bob Wolf, and Steve Zcrucha. Steve Zerucha was the lone Lawyer picked for the All-West Senate Team as offensive tackle. On the other hand, the Reserve football team ended the season with a record of 8-1-0, losing only to Euclid 20-16 in the closing minutes of 3n independent game. Seven of eleven starters were injured including the goalie Emery Dalcsio. who received All State Honorable Mention, and John Rameriz. John scored four goals in the first two games and received injuries in the third game which kept him out the rest of the season. A major upset of the season was the victory over Lake Ridge Academy 4-2. This years scoring was led by Robert Fittro. With ten returning lettermen. TRACK AND CROSS COUNTRY Finishing the 1976 season with a rush, the track team captured the West Senate outdoor championship for the third time in the last four years. Playing important roles in the success of this year’s team, under the leadership of new Coaches Bannister and Elkins, arc Erik Nakinishi, Sean Kilbane, Don McKenney, and Bob Griffin. GOLF The 1976 Golf Team had a very successful season. They won the City Championship in a tournament at Seneca Golf Course. Low man for Marshall in the tournament was Jeff Weisman with an 81. In duel meet competition, the team finished 2nd in the Senate with a 5 win 1 loss record. JefT Fryberger won the Chmura Award for having the low average for the year. Finishing 2nd and 3rd by only a few strokes were Bob McCafferty and Tim Saughnessy. 91 VARSITY BOWLING The 1976-1977 Marshall Keglcrs won the Greater Cleveland Inter-Scholastic Bowling League handicap title with a 14 and 5 record. The League is made up of 24 city and suburban schools. Seniors on the team included two award winners Steve Fatula (captain), Linda Mihalek. and John Gibson. Ken Strah was a winner of one award. Sophomore Dave D’Entrcmont won All-Scholastic honors and competed in the Annual T V. Bowl-Off between the leagues best five bowlers. Other team members were sophomore John Kastanis and juniors Frank Filippelli and Gary Wind. Team coach is Mr. Paul Oswald. The team’s 16 members are: seniors Grace Czamy, Arlene Hess. Beth Scebbi, Charlene Stemm. and Kathy Voytko; juniors Nancy Fornwalt, Jackie Martineau, Tammy Matear, Sally Misch, Brenda Rice. VOLLEYBALL 1976 brought JMH into the Sectional Tournament with 10 wins and 0 losses to be second seeded. After two years attempts. Marshall beat Rhodes for the City Championship. The girls then won their Sectional and District tournaments and participated in the Regional Tournament at Bowling Green State University. The team won 2 games to qualify for the State Tournament held at Otterbein College. After winning a match from defending state champion Shaw High, the girls lost to Fairmont West High School. The Marshall team has been the only girls’ team in Cleveland to place as runner-up in a state tournament. Finishing the season with 18 wins and 3 losses has been an incredible achievement.
