The Girls Glee Club, directed by Mary Eileen Fogarty, entertained a responsive audience with “The Candy Man” and among other selections, a beautiful tune by Gustav Holst The Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Robert Pfunder, performed in a most inspired manner. The varied program included tunes from Cole Porter. Shaft and Smetana's Dance of the Comedians”, in addition to many other selections. Mr Pfunder. new to the John Marshall music department this year, is no stranger to the many people of the community. He worked as the Instrumental Music director at Carl F Shuler. His many contributions to instrumental music in this area will be long remembered and we arc pleased to welcome him to our school. A Directing the Symphony Orchestra is Mr PfuruJcr. B The Symphony Orchestra presents one of Ihcir selections. C the String section entertains with their chosen tune I) the 1974-75 Symphony Orchestra E Miss Fogarty conducts the Girts Glee Club Vocal Music a The John Marshall Music Department is graced by 4 vocal groups. The Choir, a select group of 70 voices, performed at the Christmas and Spring Concerts. This year they were featured in a Christmas Special on Channel 43. The Marsh-Mellos are chosen from the Choir for their musicianship, voice quality, blend, and stage presence. They are in much demand for programs outside the school. In addition to their appearances on the JMH stage, this 24-voice ensemble closed the 74 season with an appearance on Channel 25. The Girl’s Glee Club was busy sewing as well as singing when for the first time, the group made coordinated outfits to wear at their concerts. These red and white checked dresses were seen at the fall and spring concerts as well as the ensemble contest. The newest addition to the vocal department, the Jurymen, is an all-men’s chorus. Sporting the Marshall colors with their red bow tics, arm bands and white shirts, they were heard at Open House and the Christmas concert. They also performed some rousing barbershop harmony at the Spring Concert. F Marshallmellows at open house 18 — activities E 20 — activities MIDWINTER BAND CONCERT January 22. 1975 marked the tenth anniversary for the popular Midwinter Band Concert. People of the school and community who enjoy good band music are always attracted to the concert and this year was no exception. Mr. Blackman and Mr. Pfunder brought to the audience a variety of music to please every taste. The musicianship demonstrated by members of the Symphonic Band. Stage Band and combined Cadet and Concert Bands will be long remembered. This year, the queen was crowned at the traditional Homecoming Dance. Two of the many groups behind our varsity sports arc the Cheerleaders and Lawyerettes. G Bruce Barkhaucr and his partner dance to Ihe music of Harlequin 24 jcIimIio C Marching Band 1974 The Marching Band begins the school year each August with two weeks of solid, exhausting, daily rehearsals in preparation for the colorful halftime football pageantry which follows in September. Except for occasional local parade appearances, the Marching Band concludes its eight or nine games scheduled and returns once again to the concert hall in the form of the Symphonic Band. Color Guard, Oompa Dolls, Pep Club The John Marshall Color Guard is a very high spirited precision team. They are colorful and dignified. The pre-game appearance at each football game is always a spectacle to behold. Their precise and flashy gun twirling at half-time provides unmeasured entertainment. The Oompa Dolls also support the John Marshall football, adding grace, beauty and talent. The Marshall Pep Club, also adds to the school spirit. They make the signs that are used in the cheering sections. Each dance has a special theme with the appropriate atmosphere for the dance. E Student Council I he Student Council of John Marshall is one of the most important clubs in our school. They are responsible for all rallies, for keeping all signs inside and outside up to date, for all elections such as those for Student Council Officers and for Homecoming Queen. The spirit of Christmas is boosted at John Marshall when the members of Student Council give each homeroom a chance to compete for the best door decorations. All sorts of wrapping paper and designs are used. The members of Student Council also arrange the Kickoff dance. Doubles dance, and Winter Formal. Key Club The Key Club is an International Boys Service Organization for the school and community. It is sponsored at John Marshall by the West Park Ki-wanis. Interpreter Under the guidance of Mr. Richard Nielson, the Interpreter is published 14-18 times yearly. It is the original product of the students of Journalism II. The Interpreter has won many awards for its outstanding quality. It has a rating in the upper 10% of the best high school newspapers hi the country. F Journalism II class work hard to make the Tcrp the best G Mr Nielson checks material before il goes to print South Pacific SOUTH PACIFIC, the prize-winning musical play by Rodgers and Hammerstein, was performed by the Cleveland Community Center Theatre October 25. 26, and November I. 2. Mary Conley, who had appeared m the show at Kenley Players with Florence Henderson, repeated her role as Bloody Mary. Others featured in the large cast included. John Schmidt and Raoul Perez, two faculty members of JMH, and Diane Garrity. a student of JMH. H c Picnic The John Marshall High School Drama department’s production of Picnic was directed by David Jeeman and was staged on December 6 and 7. The play concerns itself with the lives of 2 women in a small mid-western town, their frustrations, their heartbreaks, and how they and their families arc affected by a young rambler. Picnic plays on the theme used most often by Inge, focusing on the loneliness and spiritual desolation of the little people. Godspell and Hair” opened the 12th season of the Cleveland Community Center Theatre September 27-28. 1974. Singers, actors, dancers and rock musicians were students from John Marshall. Lincoln West. Brooklyn, Valley Forge and Rhodes High Schools along with college students from Bowling Green. Baldwin Wallace, and Ohio University. Ski Club “Think Snow! This motto guided 55 John Marshall snow bunnies into the skiing categories of intermediate and expert in just a few short weeks. Under the diligent hard work of Mr. James Hefferman the John Marshall Ski Club made six trips to Brandywine Ski Center again this year. Other advisors were Mr. Donald Burke and Ms. Barbara Robinson. This ski season was an especially good one and most of the beginning John Marshall skiers advanced quite rapidly. Due to this, a special trip to Cockaigne Ski Center in New York was made. February 17, 1975. All m all, the 1975 Marshall skiers took quite favorably to America’s fastest growing sport. A Jeff Varga and company in Hair . The films range from the early comedy shorts to the more modern mystery and adventure type films. Visual Aides The Audio Visual Aides give service to teachers for the use of Audio Visual equipment. They supply projectors, record players, tape recorders, and screens. They arc also in charge of ordering films, taking 1.1). pictures, taping for basketball games, and showing special movies. All the operators are members of The School Projectionist Club of America. Teacher-Office Aides Main duties performed by office and teacher aides, are pulling and filing cards and running errands. Cafeteria Aides Cafeteria aides clean the tables and sweep the floors. Library Aides In the library, aides shelf books and magazines, write overdue notices and stamp and separate attendance slips. Nurses Aides Nurses aides pull and file health cards, notify, organize students to see the doctor, and keep thermometers clean. Tri-captains, Tony Jaszczuk, Marty Biggins and Dan Ai-chclc led the senior contingent of 26 players: Shannon. Sauls. Hudnall, Schilla. Johnson. Curry. Thompson. Ittu, McKinney. Pivik, Colson. Skaggs. It is now the worlds largest spectator sport. In the United States it is the fastest growing team sport. In 1968, Ohio had only 21 high schools with teams, the figure now is over 100. This is the first year of the All Ohio Soccer Tournament. The first game ever played at John Marshall High school took place on October 10. 1974 in front of about 150 fans. Marshall’s team obligingly defeated Lakewood 3 to 2. Comments after the game could be summed up in two words: FUN and EXCITING. A Gening ready to kick the ball is Gabc Chaves (17). The members of the Varsity Wrestling squad consist of senior lettermen Mike Jones. Hollis Frierson. Scott Babin. Dennis Ryan, and Rick Shannon. Other seniors on the squad are Ralph Napolitano, and Kevin Rice. Completing the team arc junior Joe Deluca and sophomores Dana Babin. Bill Mahila, and Lou Fillipilli. This led to 11 wins and 6 losses in the West Senate which was a second place finish. Over all they won 18 and lost 11. The Lawyers of 1975 again fielded a strong team. There were three returning All West Senate choices; Dan Aichele. Ben Brown and Marty Biggins. Other returning seniors are Henry Zak. Tim Bartholomew, John Wasilko. and Bob Chambers. Marty Biggins G Coach Scahel giving a pep talk to the JMII baseball team 50 sports Cross Country Marshall produced another winning cross country team in 1974. The Lawyers were victorious in dual meets with Midpark. Padua. St. Eds, and Lincoln-West, losing only to Bay Village and Rhodes. Marshall also won a quadrangular meet with Cleveland Heights. West Tech, and Bedford. The biggest victory came in the Rhodes Cross Country Relays, Marshall defeated six other Senate schools, including the city champs. Rhodes. The Lawyers had a State Meet finalist, senior Larry Kinkopf, the team captain. Track The 1974 track season was plagued by injuries and illness, but the veterans on the track team are looking forward to the ’75 season. Since seniors are likely to fill a majority of the key spots, this squad, coached by Mr. Wasowski, will boast of much more experience. Members of the Varsity Squad are Seniors Marty Biggins. Woodie Thompson. Welton Lewis. Al Johnson. Tim Cornett, and Tom Clawson. The Juniors on the team are Jeff Giera. Ken Hopkins. Bob Belcas-tro. Mike Will, Dan Skalsky. and Larry Chernauskas. Golf The 1974 golf team completed another successful year. They finished second in the Senate only to St. Ignatuis, ending the spring season. They were undefeated during the fall season. In a duel match they beat St. Ignatuis. this put them in first place in the West Senate. It was the first time any team has beat St. Ignatuis in ten years. Mike Jones had the low average of the year and won the Chmura Award for both seasons. Tennis The John Marshall Varsity Tennis Team completed one of the most successful tennis seasons in many years with a final season mark of nine wins and only two defeats. JMH finished second in the Senate, the Northeast Tennis Association (our only loss was to Lakewood). Outstanding players included Jim Kastcn and Tom Holland. G 58 — poru G Endurance The boys physical education classes arc a mixture of enjoyment and cruel and unusual punishment. Endurance, coordination, and enthusiasm are all promoted to assure each student a well rounded and healthy physical education program. Bowling J.M.H. team competes in the Greater Cleveland Interscholastic Bowling League. The League is comprised of 25 high school teams from the Cleveland area. This years team includes three year award winner and senior team captain. George Mihalek. George leaves the team holding the most individual school scoring records. This seasons record to date is six wins and zero losses. This years co-captains Brian Burkinshaw and Jerry Kassil have done an outstanding job. For three years and have inspired many future swimmers. Renee Knecht Volleyball The girls volleyball team had tryouts in August and the first week in September Twelve individuals were chosen along with 3 managers. John Marshall was undefeated through the regular season and half of the playoffs. The girls ended up being tied for second place in the city with 10 wins and 2 losses — the winmngest season yet for Marshall girls. Intramural Bowling Bowling Intramurals are offered on Thursday afternoons at Olympic Recreation Center on Lorain. The number of teams have reduced but the girls still enjoy bowling and talking to each other. Then the girls went on to place second at the West Senate Meet. Our best effort was in the First Annual District Meet for girls in Northeastern Ohio. We placed fifth out of 50 teams and had the best performance of any Cleveland City Schools. Outstanding performances were turned in by Lome Oldham. Debby DeOre. and Rosemary Cebulis and Carol Fortini. Cross Country This was the 1st season for the girls interscholastic Cross Country Team. In dual meets we placed ninth out of 16 teams entered in the Chardon Invitational Meet. The girls team was honored at the Fall Sports Award Night and eight girls lettered. They were. Among these are the chemical bond, the structure of matter and the matter-energy relationships, the periodicity of the chemical elements, the mole concept, equilibrium and chemical notation. Descriptive chemistry is treated either as an out-growth of these concepts or as the point of entry. The chemistry and structure of cells; higher plants and animals: and finally evolution and ecology are considered in biology class. John Marshall is very fortunate in having an outstanding Foreign Language Department offering French, Spanish, and German Students may use a tape recorder to listen to exercises which correspond to their textbooks, to supplement regular classroom instruction. Shirley Hunt. (F) Editor in Chief of the Vanguard, was also Editor of the Faculty and Academic Section Shirley was responsible for checking and assisting with the layouts in all the sections, proof reading, rewriting many of the blurbs , tabulating the progress chart, making and rechevkmg necessary proof corrections She was also the staff photographer Trude Kcmpf. (G) Editor of the Ad Section was responsible for acquiring necessary Ads which enabled us to maintain the cost of the Vanguard at $5-00 Trude also did art work throughout the book Cheryl Bullock. (H) Editor of the Sports Section, was responsible for both the boys and girls athletics Cheryl was kept scry busy She met the photographer at football, basketball games, track meets, golf courses, and bowling alleys. Cheryl also typed. Mary Jane Davis (C worked on the 73 and '74 yearbooks, and was Editor of the Theme Section ’‘Reflections ’ She assisted everyone in ALL areas of editing the 75 book. Mary Jane had to relinquish the position ol Editor in Chief because she had a part-time program Rhea Garcia (Al and Sharon Bell (B worked together on the Activity Section This invoiced acquiring information pertaining to clubs, organi .atKins, plays, concerts and other school activities Patty Immormino (D) and Glenna Stash (E) worked on the preliminary stages of the Senior Section, by alphabetizing names, making layouts, acquiring and recording senior pictures Patty and Glenna also did 138 — yearbook staff Linda Gl.iv. K) assisted in the hilling and tui re-sponsible for the Senior Activity Section. She also supervised and vet up the limes and places for homeroom pictures, acquired ads during the summer, checked Senior names, and typed. Chamuync Julius (C).
