Luckay Yearbook Advisor D English John Marshall's English department, serving an interest and ability levels, offers students a wide variety of courses from extended studies in world. American and English literature, to short, in depth views of life and literature available as mini-courses. Academic Challenge teams have consistently brought honors to John Marshall. In 1973, Ann Cibula, John Heilman, and Robert Kessler reached the quarter Final round. In doing so, they not only brought acclaim to the school, but also won a prize of books and a trophy for JMH. The 1974 team looks forward to even greater success. Throughout the ages, man has recognized and encouraged those who excel by establishing for them special honors. In modern times, election into the National Honor Society by the secondary school faculty honors students for their attainments already made in Leadership. Character. Scholarship and Service. Omar Brashwitz, Will urn Physical Education Office Staff Library Guidance Business Music Swimming F Chemistry And Physics Concepts such as the chemical bond, the structure of matter and the matter-energy relationships, the periodicity of the chemical elements, the mole concept, equilibrium and chemical notation are the framework of Chemistry. Descriptive Chemistry is treated either as an out-growth of these concepts or as the point of entry. Physics experiments utilize such up to date equipment as air tables. Polaroid cameras, strobe light and photoelectric counters. Physics is a qualitative study of physical phenomena such as forces, energy and atomic structure. The chemistry and structure of cells, higher plants and animals, and finally evolution 3nd ecology are considered in Biology classes. Mathematics John Marshall has three Mathematics programs. A student taking Vocational studies can select cither Shop or Business Mathematics. Honor students take Geometry, Algebra II. Trigonometry and Advanced Math one year earlier, and may then take Advanced Placement Calculus in their senior year. Regular college bound students take the above in the assigned grade. Interested students may participate in the Mixed Chorus or Girls' Glee Club. Students may also join Choir or Marsh-mcllos, if accepted. Students involved in instrumental music have the opportunity to select Cadet Band or Orchestra. Marching and Concert Band and Stage Band arc offered to advanced instrumentalists. Instrumentalists from John Marshall were selected to participate in the All-Ohio Boy’s Band and All-Ohio Youth Symphony in 1973; both of these arc sponsored by the Ohio State hair and are directed by Mr. Blackman. AUUUA untui Language John Marshall is very fortunate in having an outstanding and large foreign language department offering French, Spanish and German. To supplement regular classroom instruction, students may use a language laboratory where occasionally classes meet and listen to exercises which correspond to their textbooks. Principally, the aim of the Guidance Counselors is to help the students organize their interests and aptitudes into challenging and attainable educational and vocational goals. This task embraces such basic functions as testing, career counseling, course selection counseling, and personal counseling, which should lead to a diploma and either military service, college admission, or vocational job placement. Library Over the years the library has assumed more and more the responsibility of augmenting the school’s curricula by supplementing the teacher's courses with additional materials. More and more we are going into the audio-visual field while still maintaining an impressive collection of books, magazines, pamphlets, and pictures. We will truly become a learning center and hopefully the very heart of the school with the plan to combine the book and audio-visual collection into one unit. Effort was expanded to keep our program up to date and it is changed to meet the national trend when necessary. It is the most sincere hope, that the department provided the student body with a most productive and satisfying experience. Art The John Marshall Art Department strives to develop the art student's talent and ability to their maximum level. The Art I and Art II classes cover the ground work. The basics in drawing, design, and composition arc stressed so that a thorough foundation is established for a mastery in the various art techniques. The Commercial Art and the Advanced Art courses build toward the professional approach in techniques, experimentation, and creativity. Business The Business Education Department offers several vocational, regular, and cooperative work-study progra . Distributive Education The Distributive education Retail program is designed for high school seniors who have a career objective in the field of marketing that segment of the business community engaged in the distributing and merchandising of goods and services. The program combines in-school instruction and coordinated on-the-job work experience in preparation for students in occupations that provide experiences in selling, sales promotion, buying, and or store operation. The Diversified Cooperative Training Program is designed to provide vocational training in technical areas for boys and girls usually during their senior year. It provides desirable minimum skills in various trades and develops the ability to work effectively with others. Industnal arts is Pre-Vocational in nature, to the extent that it may aid in the choice of a career, as well as providing for the use of leisure time and consumer education. Vocational Education is designed to prepare youth for initial entry into employment in a specific or closely related trade, industrial, technical, or service occupation. It is a study of tools, materials, and processes used in industry. By providing minimum skills in various trades, it is an aid in future career selection. The course is designed to instiuct students in consumer education and constructive use of leisure time, as well as developing ability to work with others. Vocational Education is designed to prepare youth for initial entry into employment in a specific or closely related trade, industrial, technical, or service occupation. The industrial program is based upon clearly defined skill, proficiencies, and knowledge needed for entry into a specific occupation in which there arc opportunities for employment. Basketball With a lot of talent, many hours of practice and much determination, the varsity squad have really got it together as one good basketball team. The 1973-74 squad consists of six seniors and seven juniors. On the court, these individuals work as a team, and as a result, we have a very successful team. C Woodie Thompson jumps to sink the ball. 47 A The Grapplers The John Marshall Wrestling teams have dominated the West Senate and City Championships over the years, as they have won the championship live out of the last six years. The starting of a Junior High wrestling program in the area has assured Marshall of maintaining its high respect in the area. Over the past 22 years Marshall's wrestling teams have won 192, lost 227, and tied 2. They have had 13 undefeated seasons, won numerous Senate, West Senate. Sectional, and district championships, won the State Champion in 1961 and placed in the top live, four other times. Marshall has had 12 individual state champions as well as many place winners. G Jeff Schadc on the verge of pinning his opponent. C 48 The Marshall Marlins The 1973-74 Marshall Marlins have undergone some changes since last year. For the first time in Marshall’s swim team history, girls have been added to the team. The girls are a fine supplement and work at making a victorious team. The pool area itself has been changed: new pool lines and bleachers have been furnished for better accommodations. Coached by William Brashwitz, the team’s future looks bright. G Paul Long dives at the start of a relay. 52 E A Winning Team The 1973 Baseball Team was in a building year after winning a co-championship m 1972. ns first year of participation in twenty seasons. This years team had a record of 6 wins and 14 losses. Baseball in 1974 is looking forward to a successful season. (i Bob Chambers touching base as lie runs. 53 Having contributed to a successful campaign in 1973, members of the track team in the class of ’74 have good reason to look forward to their senior season. 1973 was a championship and record-breaking year for the Lawyer cindermen. I'or the ninth time in 14 years. Marshall won the West Senate Outdoor Championship Meet. The lawyers also added the West Senate indoor title and captured runner-up honors in the Sectional Meet and at the Bay Village Relays. Marshall was the only school in the entire field at the West Tech Relays to place in every running event. 1973 was a rebuilding year for the Marshall Cross Country Team. Captain Jim Thompson was the only returning letterman who had been one of the top five runners on the team that had won the Senate (City) Championship in 1972. By the end of the season, the top runners on the ’73 squad were seniors Thompson. Scott Forrester. Tim McGinty. and Nick Wolf, and juniors Drew Coy, John Eaton, Larry Kinkopf, Bob Dolan. Tennis There was only one word that described the 1973 Varsity Tennis Team-REBUII DING. The team faced a tougli schedule. Golf The 1973 JMH Golf Team was in first place throughout the season until they played St. Ignatius. The golfers finished second in the Senate. A Gymnastics This year at John Marshall, the boys Physical Education classes will encounter a wide variety of sports and tests. Speedball, wrestling, volleyball, and track will highlight the sports. Marshall teams have been showing a terrific combination of school pride and sportsmanship in Volleyball. Basketball. And Track Field. The gymnasium is fully equipped with facilities for fencing, swimming, diving, tennis, track, badminton, and many other sports. Girls can take advantage of these opportunities during school as well as before and after school. There is also interscholastic and intramural competition. The Marsh'Mcllos and the Concert Chrous are open to all interested students at John Marshall. As a sophomore, the student begins in the Mixed Chorus or Girl’s Glee Club. At the end of the year, auditions are held for Choir and Marsh-Mello perpestives. The students called back from these auditions wall be in Choir next year. The Marsh Mcllos are then chosen from the Choir by the quality of the student's blending voice. The entire department performs twice a year: at Christmas time and during the Spring. Also, the Choir performs at the Commencement exercises. The Vocal Department has been acclaimed throughout the State with over fifteen members in the All-City Choir, and outstanding representation in the All-Ohio Youth Choir. Midwinter Band Concert The Midwinter Band Concert featured a variety of music played by the various outstanding JMH bands. The Dixieland Band, dressed in suspenders and straw hats carried the audience back to New Orleans with their ragtime music. The Stage Band played selections ranging from the JMH fight song to rock numbers. The Concert Band played a medley of Dr. Dolittle songs. Appearing at this concert was the Symphony Orchestra as well 3S the Symphonic. Stage, and combined Concert and Cadet Bands. As is the custom, the music performed represented a variety of periods and style . . . from Baroque to Rock. Enthusiastic applause demonstrated audience approval of Nicolia's Merry Wives of Windsor and Rossini's Italian in Algiers Overture. Also heard were the familiar strains from the hit shows, “My Fair Lady. Oliver”, and Paint Your Wagon”. A Tile melodic sound of the French Horn adds harmony to the concert. F Sasaphonc and trombones wailing, the stage tund swings into a number at last year’s Spring concert. 73 Marching Band — 1973 The Marching Band begins the school year each August with two weeks of solid, exhausting, daily rehearsals in preparation for the colorful half-time football pageantry which follows in September. F.xcept for occasional local parade appearances the Marching Band concludes its 9 or 10 games scheduled, and returns once again to the concert hall in the form of the Symphonic Band. The John Marshall Color Guard is one of the (ugliest spirited precision teams in our school today. This fine unit is composed of eight regulars and two alternates. Their colorful and dignified pre-game appearance at each football game is always a spectacle to behold. Their precise and flashy gun twirling at half-time proside unmeasured entertainment for football and basketball fans alike. The Oompah Dolls, now enjoying their fifth year of providing important bass music for the Marching and Symphonic Band, have acquired many faithful followers. “This unusual section of the band is most unique”, states their director. It gets the students involved in school matters that take place in and around school. Throughout the school year Student Council sponsors rallies and dances for the students to attend. This year there were tallies for every varsity sport and for the crowning of the Homecoming Queen. The Kick-Off Dance, Winter Formal and a Spring Rock Concert were sponsored by the JMH Student Council. Student Council also keeps the entire student body and faculty informed about upcoming events which involve students as well as faculty members in harmony. John Marshall has a fine office staff. These women offer a multitude of help, and keep records and files straight. JTL, an organization managed by Mr. Jecman. is for those students who are interested in drama. They sell tickets, make sets, and do all the promotion work for school and community plays. G Parents listen closely as Mr. Haller explains his method of grading. 83 Clubs John Marshall has a number of fine clubs and groups lo interest the student body. Servettes, Tomanic, and Key Club are just a few of these groups. Miss Henry’s Servettes group consists of about 50 girls who earn service points for the various activities they perform in and out of school, such as ushering and serving refreshments. Mr. Cozzonc is advisor of some 30 members of the Key Club. They help at school functions by checking coats, parking cars at the After Prom, and directing traffic in the parking lot. The Tomanic club sponsors the food and toy drives at Christmas time. They have homeroom help prepare a Christmas basket full of food for a needy family in the Marshall area. It Mi. The Timer's Club A group of gills that keep the times and statistics at swim meets is The Timer’s Club. The purpose of this club is to run the home meets and provide a cheering section for the swimmers at away meets. The Timer’s Club was chartered in 1972. Among these awards arc: a medalist rating from Columbia University, which placed The INTERPRETER in the upper 10% of the best High School newspapers in the country; they won THE CLEVELAND PRESS Award at St. Bonavcnturc in New York for the best High School newspaper submitted from Ohio; they also were awarded a plaque foi the best High School newspaper in the Midwest. Featured in the show were faculty members, student, alumni, and members of the community, along with area semi-professionals. Faculty members in prominent parts included: Miss McCarthy. Mr. Schmidt. Mr. Bienia, and Mr. Perez. The play starred Marge Spellacy. well known Cleveland actress and singer who played Dolly several ‘seasons ago. The show was produced and directed by Mr. David Jccmen. head of speech and theatre, while Mr. Omar Blackman conducted the orchestra. The play was presented March 2. 3,9. 10, 1973. Count Dracula Resurrected DRACULA, the classic tale of horror, was resurrected by the Drama Department in late spring of last year. Rolling fog, tombs, and the proper chilling effects characterized the “camp piece of fiction. Featured in the cast were Dan Rccchioasthc indcstmctablc Count along with Dave Botson and Terry O'Reilly. A scries of One Acts were presented in the Utile Theatre during the same week. The plays were student directed and featured playwrights Thornton Wilder. Tennessee Williams and William Inge. V P4 m Applause Cleveland Community Center Theatre's production of APPl AU$1: was a Cleveland premiere in December at John Marshall. APPLAUSE, based on the movie, All About Eve featured Betty Blakscc. drama teacher from Berea High School, Mr. David Jeeman, Marshall's drama coach, and Mis. Basilic, former Marshall English teacher, along with Marshall alumni, faculty, and students. Rock music highlighted the production as dancers rocked to psychedelic Hashes of lights. The dancers danced on tables as well as on the stage. The play was presented November 30. and December 1,7, and 8. Fiddler on the Roof, the world’s mo si acclaimed musical and Broadway's longest running hit was performed by the Theatre and Music Department for four performances in February. The knowledge acquired and priceless experience will be enjoyed in future involvements either in college areas or in the business world. A Charles Seighnun was Advertising Editor and responsible for more monies collected than any previous Advertising Editor. Charlie also assisted with typing and blurbs in other sections as well as billing and tabulating all the monies collected. I) Mary Jane Davis who has worked on the 73 ami 74 Yearbooks is now editor of the 75 Vanguard. Mary Jane not only was Editor of the Sports section both Boy’s Athletics and Girls's Sports, but also assisted proofreading, typing, and did layouts for every section other than the Editors. When Carla was ill. Mary Jane took over the chores. C Carla Christopher Editor of the 74 Vanguard, not only was responsible for the opening section but made the necessary corrections on all pages, proofreading, rcchccklng pages and pictures, and tabulating the pages sent. She has also trained Mary Jane to follow in her footsteps.
