Basketball is the only original American sport that has a definite inventor. Dr. James Maismith originated the game with the intentions for it to be played indoors with a limited number of players. The game was designed to fill the gap between the football season and the baseball season. The game was played first with bottomless peach baskets in 1891. It has grown to be a competitive sport at many levels including high school. Horace Johnson leaps to keep the ball from getting to his opponent.
