Dr. James Maismith originated the game with the intentions for it to be played indoors with a limited number of players. The game was designed to fill the gap between the football season and the baseball season. The game was played first with bottomless peach baskets in 1891. It has grown to be a competitive sport at many levels including high school. Horace Johnson leaps to keep the ball from getting to his opponent. Greg Misch attempts pointage but is stopped by the defense. Basketball Fills the Gap Between Seasons 24 Golf, Tennis, Bowling Doug Wcrb corrects Rich Creation's position for holding an iron. We are proud of you and look forward to the day when your accomplishments in the world at large will inspire future Marshall students to go and do likewise. You will be missed, but be assured you leave behind many fine examples for others to imitate. 31 Miss Alexander Mr. Bahen Miss Baran Mrs. Barkdull Mr. Barsan Miss Bauer Miss Beebe Mr. Billey Mr. Blackman Mrs. Bockwich Mrs. Brown Mr. Burke Mr. Busha Mr. Caliguire Mrs. Campbell Mr. Coleman Mr. Cozzone Mr. Czar Mr. Da mm Mr. Dare Modeling For Language Office 32 MS Wood Shop 33 Mr. Estesen Mr. Hohertz Miss Hoi ling Miss Hoover Mr. Jacobson Mr. Jecmen Mrs. Lammers Mrs. Laux Miss Leach Mr. Leahy Mrs. Leonard Mr. Gibbons Custodians Mr. Tousel, Mr. Hynst and Mr. Morgan. This year of almost constant work, with its unforeseen problems, was filled with deadlines to be met and copy to be written. The VANGUARD staff proved to be superior in all the matters of producing this yearbook. At this time I would like to give my thanks to the staff and Miss Luckay, the yearbook advisor, who helped me make this year book possible. Also, my congratulations to the graduating January 1969 class. In Student Council, classes, or sports, John Marshall students really get things done. The spirit and enthusiasm that Marshall students employ is why so many things get done. Whether the project is required or voluntary, it gets done. The friendships we have formed by doing things together at John Marshall are contributions to our characters and our lives. 4 Doing things together 5 Working together 6 brings a real sense of accomplishment to Marshall students. United Appeal, canned goods drives, working on the TERP, and playing on a team are just a few ways in which students work together. Our rewards are twofold; first is a sense of accomplishment, second is friendships. By uniting our efforts, we gain a chance to make new acquaintances and lasting friendships. 7 Having fun together is shakers at football games, cheering at basketball games, and all the other activities that make high school one of the most enjoyable times of our lives. We laugh and cheer, we talk and smile, and all the time we are making friends. Spirit is contagious; when it affects one in a crowd, soon all join in. It is this sense of unity, this sense of belonging that shows we are true friends, and having fun together is visible proof of our friendship. Sharing things together is the greatest way to get to know someone. Whether it is the quick hi!” to a friend passing in the crowded hallway, or the almost impossible task of fitting all the assorted trivia that locker partners have into a locker that always seems too small, we come into contact with many people we can call our friends. 11 Studying together provides an opportunity to gain new friends. Tutoring someone in the math office, helping someone in study hall, or getting together to prepare a group project forms the beginnings of new friendships or strengthens old ones. The conversation always seems to stray from the assignment, but we do get some studying done, and we have a great time while doing it. We may forget some of the knowledge we gained, but we won't forget the friends we made. 12 13 ■MU is the culmination of our high school life. Whether we enter col lege, join the service, or get a job, we are going out into the world to follow our separate paths. Never again will we be as close as on die day of graduation, but we will always remain friends, because our friendships are deep-rooted, cultivated by months of being together and sharing the up’s and down's that friendship brings. 14 Leaving together 15 FACULTY ACADEMICS E. Kosman Assistant Principal ). Burke Assistant Principal R. Lidrbach Assistant Principal Your class is graduating into a world torn apart with dissen sion and distrust. Law and order have no appeal to a sizeable minority of the youth in the land. Our flag has been subjected to insults here and abroad. Rarely has a senior class been faced with the responsibilities that now have become an intricate part of your life. Those of us who travelled the long trail have faith in your abilities and good sense and honestly believe that through your efforts and others like you, the future of our country will be redirected toward goals which will again bring us the respect of the rest of the world. What a thrill it could be twenty-five years hence for you to pick up this book and show your own graduating senior what the world was like in your day and what your generation did about it. 18 D. Outside activities such as tutoring to aid those having difficulties are rendered by members of such societies. Library work is invaluable to these students. Marshall is indeed fortunate in both its Library staff and facilities. Math Honorary encourages and aids the struggling. An interest in the language draws Cerman AHS members together often for meetings. French NHS members Barb Lucas, Jo Ellen Lucic, and Mary Muhlhan put up the wonders of France. These qualifications are strict, and those who are admitted are truly the molders of tomorrow’s dreams. The Fall Induction was held December 12, 1968, and fifty-eight new members were admitted. Parents of the new members were present for the Induction and for the traditional tea held afterwards in the Girls’ New Gym. Chris Mayle greets her proud mother after the NHS induction. While serving at the tea, Miss Hirniak and Miss Deubel greet the new inductees. ■ r A. • V t) BERT HARRIS MARSHALL'S WINNING IT'S ACADEMIC TEAM For the sixth year straight, John Marshall's It's Academic team, consisting of captain Connie Cooper, a January graduate, Robert Harris. 11B, and Gary Troiano, 10B, swept to victory last fall. They had an amazing 150 point margin over opponents Avon Lake and St. Joseph's High School. Much credit also goes to alternates Gary Saltsman, Dwight Spreng, and Ed Kilbane, who spent many long hours assisting in practice and preparation. The students earned for the school the 24 volume set of Collier's Encyclopedia. The show is sponsored by the Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company and was seen on WEWS, channel 5, November 16, 1968. 34 A CA DEMIC PROGRAMS There are many students in Marshall who help, annually, to win honors for the school. Those who participate in It’s Academic and this year's National Merit Scholarship winner are capable of going on to even greater honors. The selection of what to do with their lives is left up to them. However, able guidance is provided to steer these, and many others on to profitable careers. Studying really pays off for National Merit Scholarship semi-finalist Kathleen Scheutzow. The College Room guides students to collegiate life. 35 PRECISION. CREATIVITY These character traits are learned at Marshall by students in all fields. A future as a scientist, fashion designer, or a skillfully trained craftsman will depend on these characteristics. Excellent programs in these crafts are offered at Marshall, and the use made of them suggests excellent workers and citizens for the future. The usefulness of the product is a goal in wood class. New ideas play an important part in art class. Gary Murray and Jim Keller work on a malfunctioning car. 36 A shop student demonstrates welding. Joe Swinko bends tubing over a bunsen burner. Leonard Cerveny and Ron Kasarda conduct a chemistry experiment. 37 Up to date lab equipment and skilled teachers turn out excellent typists. Time and skill go into the making of a cake. Consultations and friendly help will finish that dress. 38 Careful concentration will turn out perfect results. PRACTICE AND STAMINA are employed by students in home economics and business education daily. Cakes and dresses don't always turn out the first time, anymore than does a business letter. The Marshall student always strives however, for perfection. Excellent food, service, and conversation are found in Marshall's Tea Room. 39 ACTIVITIES The John Marshall Student Council swings into the holiday spirit. During the month of December, the students set the mood of Christmas throughout the halls. Each homeroom is given a door to decorate in the hope of winning a prize. Each year, Student Council decorates a beautiful tree with all the symbols of Christmas in the main foyer. The holiday spirit is also seen at Thanksgiving, when the student body contributes to Thanksgiving baskets for needy families in the area. 42 STUDENT COUNCIL PROJECTS The Student Council sponsored goal of $5.00 per homeroom for Thanksgiving baskets was reached by JMH students in one hundred homerooms. The goal was exceeded and the extra money was donated to the Christmas baskets. Staple foods such as potatoes, flour, sugar and canned goods were given in quantities large enough to last the families a month. More than two dozen families enjoyed a more plentiful meal because of this service. Thanksgiving baskets for needy familes line the walls of the gym. Students carry' boxes of food and sacks of potatoes to waiting cars. Colleen Gutta, Pam Stassfurth, Pat Nassano and Janet Pergalsky decorate the tree for Christmas. Paul Gruber and Jim Vokac decorate their homeroom's door for the contest. STUDENT COUNCIL The Student Council gives the students a chance to voice their opinions. They can use this privilege in selecting qualified students to run their student government. Students show their support by becoming Student Council Representatives. This semester, the students have selected Jerry Young as President, Mary Muhlhan as Vice President, Sharon Houghton as Secretary and John Zayac as Treasurer. Wayne Pokrandt and Dale Buttolph begin preparations for the It's Student Council Assembly. Student Council Executive Board members discuss plans for the coming semester. 45 Otis Manis sells a student loyalty items. Ron Kassarda puts up signs to inform students of the Tomanic Club Toy Drive. To keep her school clean, Donna Caldwell picks up papers in the hall. Rod Spitzer puts up letters in the cafeteria show cases to inform the students of the weeks activities. PROJECTS Each class is given a project in which the students work throughout the semester. The 10B class is in charge of picking up papers in the school yard and in the building. The 10A class puts up posters throughout the school to inform students of school functions coming up in the future. The 1 IB class puts up letters in the five wall cases in the cafeteria which tell of the school events happening that week. The 11A class sells loyalty items during the football season to help support the team. Selling books in the bookstore is the job of the 12B class. 47 The Color Guard, the Rhymettes, and the Marching Band line up for their half-time show. DANCE BAND. ORCHESTRA The John Marshall Orchestra, under the direction of Mr. Raish, practices diligently for its many performances. During the year, the orchestra plays at National Honor Society inductions, PTA meetings and Commencement. Instrumental programs are given in the spring and fall. The orchestra is composed of students with an ear for music. The orchestra is just one of the many musical departments in which John Marshall students are involved . Conducting the orchestra is the job of Mr. Raish. Intense drill is necessary for perfection. 51 The John Marshall Choir fills the air with song at the Christmas Concert. MARSHMELLOWS FIRST ROW: T. VOCALISTS Our vocal music departments consist of various divisions in which many of John Marshall's talented students participate. Our choir is noted throughout the city, and the Marshmellows have participated in many community affairs. We also have a Select Girls' Choir and both a Boys' and Girls' Glee Club. Our vocal department participates at the Christmas and Spring Concerts, Commencement and give many special performances throughout the year. SCHOOL DA NCES During the year, various school organizations sponsor dances to boost school spirit. The Kick-Off Dance, given by the Student Council, is held to start the football season. In October, the Cheerleaders sponsor the Homecoming Dance. The Winter Formal promotes the Christmas feeling. Also in the winter, the Rythemmettes hold their dance to continue school spirit through the basketball season. For a change from the routine, the Sadie Hawkins Day Dance in February, gives the girls a chance to ask their favorite guy to a dance. To end the school year, Student Council sponsors a formal in the spring. Students express their emotions in dance. Students show their school spirit at the Kick-Off Dance. The Winter Formal is considered the prettiest dance of the year. Wayne Pokrandt dances to the music of the Stage Band with his date. Penny Holloway and Dale Keter enjoy refreshments. 55 Gypsy, Alice Cunningham predicts the world's doom as the dancers dance to their death. John McCafferty, as Henry, comes home alter the atomic war. Backstage, David George arranges Janet Buchwald's love beads before their entrance. SENIOR PLAY The Pulitzer Prize winning play, The Skin of Our Teeth, by Thornton Wilder was presented in the Marshall Theatre by the drama department on November 22 and 23. The story is about the Antrobus family and how they managed to survive many calamities by the skin of their teeth. The play is divided into three acts: past, present, and future, prehistoric, present and post atomic war. Psychedelic scenes, mod costumes, slang and lighting make this one of the most elaborate school productions. 57 Tom Davis gets valuable training in sales through Distributive Education. The willingness of the students to help teachers is always appreciated. During the day, students are seen helping the nurse in the Health Clinic, selling materials at the bookstore, selling paperback books in the bookshoppe, checking study halls and giving the morning announcements. By assisting teachers, students learn to give freely of themselves. Julia Miller assists the school nurse in bandaging the wist of Bonnie Cooney. Girls can be seen checking study halls during their free periods. BOOKSHOPPE . Kathy Kahn arranges books in the BOOKSTORE . A bookstore aide sells a student a combi- bookshoppe. nation lock. PA ANNOUNCERS. Kathy Voytko gives her morning announcements, while Donna Wessel and Scott Bessell wait their turn in line. FTA members discuss the saying of an apple for the teacher. ART Students display their talents in art. In John Marshall, students combine work and pleasure. In the Future Teachers of America Club, students learn the techniques and problems of teaching. One day during the semester is designated as FTA Day when the members of this club teach the class of a teacher in a subject they would like to major in. Students majoring in art join the Art Guild. Exhibits are held in which their works of art are displayed. The National Thespian Society contains those students with an ability to act. Plays are given each year by the Thespians. Chess Club members play before and after school, and during their lunch periods. Tournaments are held among schools each year. THESPIANS Members of the National Thespian Society perform in the senior pi ay, The Skin of Our Teeth. CHESS players study the board carefully for strategic moves. 65 INTERPRETER The John Marshall school newspaper, the Interpreter, has won many journalistic awards. The Terp staff can be seen working every day to better the paper. Much work constitutes the success of a school paper. Articles must be written, dummy’sheets must be made and proofreading the final draft must be done. After the Terp staff finishes all their work on one issue, they can sit back and enjoy their finished product. In the school paper, there are articles suited for every person's taste. News items, editorials, feature stories and reviews are just a few included. Bernard Rauh helps a staff member make corrections. Much work goes into making a successful paper. 66 The Terp staff is busily at work preparing the school newspaper. Their season record was 12--5. Bowling team members meet with Mr. Paul Oswald at Erieview Lanes every Saturday morning from September to March. The Decathlon team travels to South High each spring with Mr. Bill Quayle to compete in the ten tests of physical ability. The tennis serve must be executed with precision and accuracy. During this year, emphasis is placed on lifetime sports activities and a continuation of total fitness from the sophomore and junior years. Senior boys anxiously look forward to both the game activities and the tests of physical strength. The curriculum includes activities such as badminton, indoor and outdoor track, speedball, volleyball, touch football, wrestling, tumbling, and apparatus work. Conditioning and fitness tests include jump rope, 600-yard run, navy tests, rope jumping and calisthenics to music. These various activities not only build strength and co-ordinat.on, but they also teach teamwork, honesty, and sportsmanship. Conditioning on the underground track develops endurance. 83 FRONT ROW: M. Fleming, M. Muhlhan, S. Wasylko, J. Fassbcnder, T. Koltan, C. Mihu, J. Krieger, J. Emerick, P. Nassano. ROW 2: L. Boh ay, D.
