The Kick-Off dance in the fall, the gaily decorated Christmas doors and the senior-faculty softball game signify Marshall’s spirit. The annual Memorial day assembly captures Marshall’s dignity. Leadership, the Natural 6 Ability To Coordinate People and Ideas is evidenced in the student council officer selling loyalty items to boost school spirit, or in a hospital volunteer working for her community. A gym leader and a math tutor possess this quality as both use their talents to add to the education of others. Even after being recognized for outstanding leadership with a National Honor Society pin, the true leader continues to serve through school land community projects. I am sad to see you leave. You and I began our high school careers together at John Marshall and your class will always hold a special place in my thoughts. I have watched you mature into fine young ladies and gentlemen and have been stimulated by your goals and ambition. Your class can graduate with the knowledge that it has maintained and added to the traditions of excellence at Marshall. There can be little doubt that this class will do as well as or even exceed the achievements of the students that preceded you. They represent some of the first people we come in contact with the first days of our tenth grade semester and in many cases they will remain with us until graduation day. Seeing us in both our good and bad phases, they are ready to aid us in our school and social lives. Often students find themselves falling back on these persons as they would their own parents. There are many jobs at Marshall that receive little recognition but are still very important to the operation of the school. Some of these jobs are pictured on this page. For instance, the bookstore and bookshop are run by students and are useful both to teachers and pupils. Lab aides help busy biology, chemistry, and physics teachers with clean-up and jobs such as mixing chemicals. Library aides stack and put away books, tend to the hundreds of cards necessary to the library, and otherwise help the librarians. Class Officers, Alternates Plan Year Ahead Every semester each class chooses four class officers and their alternates. These people represent the class at the Student Council meetings in addition to homeroom representatives, and plan class activities, such as the class projects. Pictured here are some of these projects. The 1 IB class officers have charge of the bulletin boards in the Oasis, and the 11A officers take care of the cafeteria bulletin boards. The 12B class sells loyalty items in the Oasis . These people also plan, decorate and put on dances. They organize money-raising projects such as hay-rides, and handle class finances. Orchestra Plays at Concerts, Contests, Commencement The John Marshall Orchestra, directed by Mr. John Raisch, made several successful appearances this year. Holy Name, our first Senate opponent, beat Marshall 22--0, but in the next two games the Lawyers shut out rival West Tech 16--0 and defeated Rhodes 30--6. After losing to South High, we came back to defeat West High. In the muddy St. Ignatius game, our team held the number-one Wildcats to a low score of 0--13. Mr. Jeff Kasler, who placed third in the state tournament in 1957 as a Marshall student, leads the junior varsity team daily in gruelling workouts. Until the 1966-67 season, Marshall had been undefeated for thirty-three consecutive wins in dual meets. We suffered our first loss from South High, and a second from John Adams, but we won the remaining matches of the year, and sent Tom Barber (154 lbs.) to the state tournament. The team hoped to start another thirty-three consecutive victories in the 1968 season. Cary Hosta rejoices a victory over his dejected opponent, a former all-senate wrestler in the 127 pound division. Coach Gibbons gives last instructions and a word of encouragement. Boys Participate in Minor Sports The golf team practices diligently after school every day from April to June at Big Met golf course, where all their matches are played. In their 1967 season, with advice from head coach Don Burke, the team defeated all public schools in the Senate. The bowling team practices every Friday night from September to March with coach Oswald. Every Saturday morning the team has a match at Erieview lanes against one of the twenty-three teams in the Greater Cleveland League. In 1967 the team placed sixth in the League. Decathlon, the toughest minor sport, demands not only the muscles necessary for other sports, but also agility, balance, coordination, endurance, and speed. It consists of ten events: bar vault, broad jump, agility run, jump-and-reach, squat balance, rope climb, skin-the-cats, foot balance, trunk extension, and chin-ups. Marshall's team, coached by Bill Quayle, travels every spring to South High to compete in the annual meet. Following through, one of the most important points in bowling, helped make Doug Terbeck the top man on the team. Rich Fried strikes up all the skill he can spare to bowl over the opposition. 89 Runners Rate Among Top in City Marshall's cross-country and track teams, coached by Roger Ram-seyer, have for several years been outstanding in Cleveland. The cross-country team, consisting of Greg Romig (winner of the Roger Ramseyer award), Nick Venetis, Terry Carr, Ed Coy, Bob Bauer, Mike Snow, and Bob Gomez, closed its 1967 season with only one loss in dual meets. Winning all dual meets except one in 1967, the indoor track team ended the season as West Senate champions. Terry Carr, Dave May-her, and Fred Collins, members of a school record-setting 880 relay team, returned to participate on the 1968 team. Undefeated in dual meets, the outdoor track team finished second in a district of thirty-one teams. In the city meet Artie Cann tied the school high-jump record of 6 1 3 4 . The Senior Class of June 1968 is maintained and headed by its executive board consisting of the class officers and their runners-up and directed by Miss Luckay, Senior Class Advisor. They are aided greatly by a team of Senior Room workers who work with the yearbook, cap and gown and card and invitation money as well as keep records which must correllate with the treasurer's. The secretary's duties are many, for both Jojean Kor-nowski and Terri Voelger must type the all-important diploma lists and all the other time-consuming clerical work of the class. Bonnie Chapman, as vice-president, is concerned with the prom and after-prom and the other social activities of the class. Her assistant, Jan Ryan, shares in the duties of this office. The president Tom Chmura's task of supervising the class as well as participating in all planning and executing stages of its activities is a large responsibility and Tom must be aided by his runner-up, Gary Nemes. Perhaps the largest duties are given to the twenty Senior H.R. representatives who must carry all messages, money and orders of their individual homerooms to and from the Senior Room. Senior Paul Kroeger's interest in music and especially the trombone enabled him to be chosen to march in the Macy's Thanksgiving day parade with the MacDonald's Band of America. Barb Burgess, Jim Held, Rick Taylor and JMH June '67 graduate Gary Taylor enjoy singing folk music Peter, Paul and Mary style and have sung on several occasions in the West Park area. Marge Lombardi and Tony Weinert gain valuable experience in acting and become more confident before large numbers of people through their interest in drama. We chose the theme, recruited the staff, and began plans for the June 1968 VANGUARD. Staff meetings beginning in the summer continued throughout the school year, with seemingly ceaseless pressure on us to meet numerous deadlines. With the last deadline in March the tension was relieved, but the anticipation began. The largest yearbook yet produced at Marshall will, we hope, prove itself worthy of the work put into it. . .
