Vanguard ‘January Class of 1964 johu Marshall High School 3952 W. 140th Street Cleveland 11. Ohio I foreword This record of our past three years has been prepared in gratitude for the education and guidance given to us by our faculty. May our success in the future prove that the inspiration we have received at John Marshall has not been in vain. - 2 - Contents - 3 • Administration f KAH05 Principal. £ec P. Hauer................. Someone once said, MA wise man will make more opportunities than he finds. It follows then that the wiser one is the more thought he will give each day and each week to the unavoidable decision of how to invest his life. History has taught us that if we insure our lives with a good education and a sound character and dedicate ourselves to the ideals of service to humanity, the world will long remember us for the good we have done. Our fellow men should expect no more, and Cod would have us do no less. - 6 - Dean of Qiris ELEANORE KOSMAN 'Dean of Hoijs ROBERT LAZZARO • 7 - 'Dedication In appreciation for t he hours he spent in directing our senior play and for the interest lie has always shown for us as individuals, we dedicate our c I a ss b ook to Mr. John Schmidt. MR. JOHN A. SCHMIDT Our play director relaxes between the scenes of Dear Ruth. Each class is made more enjoyable by lus casually instructive yet serious manner. We shall always remember Mr. Schmidt as a fine teacher and good friend. Our 12A Homeroom Zeachers We shall always remember Miss Bauer as an outstanding biologist and teacher. He knew the value of a strong democracy and the necessity of peace in the world. His ideals of courage, conviction, and fortitude were evident in his every action. He accomplished much in a short time to make a better world for all of us. He gave of himself and would have given more. We can only honor his memory by constantly dedicating ourselves to the ideals held by our late president — JOHN F. KENNEDY VANGUARD JUNE CLASS of 1964 John Marshall High School - 2 - 3952 W. 140th Street Cleveland 11, Ohio CONTENTS - 3 - In Special Recognition... As a teacher. Mr. Cox makes American history come alive to his students with the intensity, humor, and depth of knowledge that he brings to the classroom. As evidence of his interest in his fellow man, Mr. Cox instituted the Human Relations Club. He is also the coach of the hurdlers. Mr. Cox acts with vitality and he imparts that same feeling to his students. We shall always remember his enthusiasm, his friendliness, and his interest in us. Mr. Cox points to a copy of a political cartoon expressing the problems of a minority political party. - 4 - Mr. Van Allen asks questions about an unusual srraph. What Mr. Van Allen emphasizes most in a math class is the necessity of remembering a general principle and the way to adapt it to special situations, making it unnecessary to remember many formulas. The same idea can be applied to Mr. Van Allen himself. We can not recall each day of every class, but we can remember Mr. Van Allen’s general warm humor and patience in teaching. When we think of this, memories of his anecdotes and encouragement of interest in mathematics will always return. However, we will most easily remember Mr. Van Allen as a valued teacher and a good friend. Richard Van Allen - 5 - 9 NOIlVVlSINIWdV An even wore valuable national asset is our reservoir of dedicated men and women. JOHN F. KENNEDY and FACULTY - 7 - PRINCIPAL LEE B. BAUER Principal John Marshall High School For the past three years we have worked together in a school for which we all have the deepest feeling. Likewise we are devoted to the traditions of John Marshall and to its future hopes and successes. May we leave as friends and may we aspire to continue this friendship and further the purpose of this school as an institution of learning for the young men and women who are to follow us in the years ahead. -8- DEAN OF GIRLS Eleanore Kosman DEAN OF BOYS Robert Lazzaro •9- Marian Duffy Guidance Joseph Nicklos Job Placement Donald Youtz College Walter Lambert Honor Study Hall Anna Maraschky Senior Advisor Shirley Babitt Student Council - 10- 12A HOMEROOM TEACHERS Florence Laux ik Grace Schuenemann Donna Park Mary Dils Augustine Caliguire John Hawken David Cox Howard Jones . In the chemistry labs, the ceramics and enamel classes, and the industrial arts classes, this protection was first required bv state law in the fall of 1963. Construction . . . . During our senior year, we witnessed the building of a twenty-two-room addition to Marshall, to contain a new girl's gym, a print shop, a small theater, a music room, a foods room, science labs, and other special and regular classrooms. It will not be finished until September, so many of us will be back again this fall to see the completed addition. Mr. Fletcher walks down halls that will seem a lot less wider at 8:00, when over 2,000 students are on their way to their first class. - 112 - Photography .... Miss Luckay develops one of the many group pictures she arranged to have taken for the yearbook. Special pictures were taken by Larry Mart. Most of us have the hard-working photography studio of May’s Department Store to thank for our senior pictures. Music . . . . Henry Barthelman plays his baritone and Eric Beheim practices on his clarinet. Perhaps they played for the senior informal, the Brontosaurus Stomp, held on April 10. Remember the furor created by that original name? At 4 p.m.......... School ends, and we go our separate ways. • 113-
