J ohi v itcuishcM f-liqh QchooQ CMUuvL I l, O luo- All the lightness and nonchalance that has prevailed in these our high school days, is soon to be forever lost. We have, therefore, within these pages tried to put faint glimpses of today which may tomorrow unleash their memories. And in an hour, in a minute, in a second, this day shall end with another's dawn. And if, in that tomorrow, you occasionally leaf through these pages, we shall have been successful. Deckcotltou Atldotlc . Acftuiftes. FktcuMy Seiti W6 Dvhjtoitiw For the way he can wear bermuda shorts to a class picnic, and yet retain Ills dignity; For the way he can start every other anecdote with, Now, when I was in the Marines.. and yet make each as interesting as the last; For the way he can take the dullest fact and, sprinkling it with a bit of wit, come up with something you remember. For the way he can say, It’s not your best, and make you cringe because you know it's your worst; For the way he can teach what's there to be taught whether you're an Excellante or just getting by; For the way he can stare at you and make it more painful than a thousand criticisms verbally expressed; jm For the way you somehow are made conscious that he's one of % the most mature men you’ve ever met; jB For all these things and more we dedicate this, our edition of the Vanguard to Mr. Locklear looks over a tentative article for the Mosaic. He first became interested in writing as a college student, and since then, has done a noteable job teaching students to share his interest. In the midst of football battle with South High, Coach William Moritz gives End Fritz Schieliet last second instructions . For the three years that Mr. Moritz has been head coach, Marshall muscled its way to two Charity Games, and toppled St. Ignatius for an unprecedente three in a row. Mr. Moritz's winning philosophy: There are no individual stars on a football squad; it is a team effort. i Blurring by supine end Seth Halley (73) and into the protective range of ready tackle Larry Supelak (91), leading ground gainer Dave Asp spurts for more yardage against South High. The result: Marshall bumped South on its perfect sweep of the West Senate slate. 9 Center Ken Radke sS Cuard Dick Germuska Halfback Jim Ludwig Fullback Gary Jcsser 10 Team Captain, Tackle Tom Wilhelm Graduating Tackle, Dennis Whitticar End Tony Lesh Graduating Guard, William Morrison Back Churck Bronzi Mike Chipinski checks the downs c 11 Student Manager Russ Millspaugh intently keeps tabs on game time statistics. Gary Ramsdell and Tom Haller played the lead roles of father and his intoxicated, misogynistic cohert, respectively. Successful people have learned that the basis of true and lasting happiness in life is service to others. To act kindly and to deal justly with our fellow-men and to walk humbly with God is more than a purpose; rather it must be the answer for human existence. It has been said that we make a living by what we get. but we make a life by what we give. These words express my hope and best wishes for each and every member of the June 1961 graduating class. Mr. Donald Youtz, Advisor. JUDITH ECKERT was cited for excellence in English by the National Council of Teachers of English. She was named runner-up in the Council's annual achievement awards competition. Judy was nominated by the English department to represent Marshall in the competition. Two tests, three pieces of composition and two supporting letters from John Marshall personnel were the bases used by a committee of state judges for evaluating the nominees. There is room on these pages to recognize only a few of those who have won honors through scholarship. This will be printed before most awards are given. Grades and honors, however, are not important in themselves. Their value is as an indication of knowledge or ability. Those who miss the A, or the B, by a few points will find the reward for their efforts notin school, but in life, where they will use what they have learned. National Merit Scholarship Finalists John Hartline, Ncila Frederick, and Bruce French qualified in the upper six tenths of one per cent of American high school seniors in a test of general information and aptitude. Those who received letters of commendation were Laurel Bradt, Judy Eckert, Marlene Hassel, Janet Kail, and John McGrew. 21 Mr. Roger Schleuter, Advisor; Christine Koelewyn, Henry Sigmund, and Judy Swaddling. 7fi Gpjimhv f-fo K v Codety itrA Latin NoJtiovjal I-Iom i Codety BACK ROW: Don Hennessey, Kathleen Grabneggcr, Carol Hackenberg, Cecilia Rossie, Ann Rosin. With only three returning lettermen and less height than in previous years the scrappy Lawyer roundballers found themselves in a revamped and tougher West Senate. This year the team posted a 5 and 9 Senate record and a 5 and 14 overall. Having only four members of the team lost through graduation, next season will find and experienced and determined Marshall basketball team ready to claim its rightful position, on the top! A Shot Blocked! Get That Jump Ball. COACH JOHN HAWKIN 32 CejM yv UoopstPM TONY LESH Leading the Lawyers hoop attack this year were four aggressive seniors. Sparkplug and high scorer of the team is speedy guard Bill Maynard. Specializing with a deadly jump shot from outside. Bill led the way for the team. Also at guard is crafty John Weidner a ball hawk on defense, John intercepted many passes which were turned into points for the Lawyers instead. BILL MAYNARD At forward is wiry, six foot Tony Lesh. A real scrapper under the boards Tony played a large part in grabbing many valuable rebounds. At guard, with Bill and John is Ed Smith. Hitting from outside on his jump shot specialty Ed opened up many a tight game. For these reasons we now pay tribute to these four seniors who fought so well for the red and white. After winning a second straight West Senate Championship and the District Title the mightiest Cross Country Team of all time brought home the first State Championship in the entire history of the school. In posting this creditable season the harriers showed a determined team effort by holding up under pressure when the others crumbled. In winning their first State Crown the team, led by senior captain Ross MacLachlan. totaled the lowest number of points (58) in the meet. The other runners competing were Karlis Spalvins, Rich and Bob Osicka. Dan Klinger, Bob Zizak and Dan Hamamaiven. In the words of coach Ted Dietrich Our group had the ability, believed it. and then went out and did it. 34 KEN RADKE ROSS MacLACHLAN Defending indoor and outdoor West Senate Champions the John Marshall track team is preparing to recapture these titles a second time.
