'51. dedicate our Classbook to Miss Ruth Goodwin in appreciation of the help she has given us during our school days. Miss Goodwin of the down-East accent and dry Maine wit has long been a senior girls' homeroom adviser. Her work as Junior Red Cross adviser and her explanations of the abstract problems of algebra and geometry we will remember, just as we will always remember finding the formular for the arear” of a circle—and Miss Goodwin herself. OH to a flying start with an inspired fight against the heavily favored city champions from St. Ignatius, the Lawyer eleven looked the best since 1945. However they were rudely upset by West Tech. 18-12. and although they were outscored in the remainder of their games, they were by no means outplayed. The long-awaited battle with Lakewood's highly-rated Rangers ended in a 19-0 triumph for the purple and gold in the muck and mire of Lake-wood Stadium. A leaky pass defense, and poor blocking for the ball carriers, stood out as the greatest drawbacks of Coach Nick Giantonio's hard fighting lads. Two hard running backs, Joseph Parate and Anthony Zappone. and linemen John Rubin, Paul Farrell, Gene Janik. Mladen Zupan and Gerald Kraejer were outstanding game after game. Other seniors were Thomas Coltman, Mike Starinsky, Robert Tanko. Jack Brittain. David Anderson, and Richard Talbert. Coach A1 Millsom's cagers suffered two disadvantages each time they took to the floor last season. One was the opposing team, and the other was the height advantage of the opposition. With the first five averaging only 5 feet 11 inches, they had a tough time covering some of the tall men, common in today's game of basketball. The squad dropped three Senate games, to Lincoln. West and South, by a total of six points and finished the season with a record of five wins and eight losses. The 1950-51 Lawyers had one of the finest shooting and passing teams in the district, but their lack of height and inaccuracy from the foul line, made the difference. William Clark, who ended the year as the most improved ballplayer in the club, and a Cleveland News All-Star Senate choice, together with Donald Schilke, Richard Graber, who graduated at midyear, plus the June graduates Captain Henry Thomay and Thomas Neeson, comprised the starting quintet. Sophomore Richard Goodwin kept the state championship in the family. as he annexed the 103-pound crown. Former Marshall wrestler Alan Peterson won state honors in the two previous seasons. Team captain Mladen Zupan won a third place in the 154-pound class, while seniors Paul Farrell and Robert Zwolenik took fourth places in the 138 and 145-pound divisions respectively. Although the team's record for dual matches was only four wins and five loses, it put on some of the best exhibitions in this area. Two of the highlights of the season for Coach A. E. Busha's squad were the matches with West and Euclid. The Marshall men battled West's three-time state championship team to a standstill, before dropping a close 22-18 decision, and one week later they upset Euclid's powerhouse. 20-18. Seniors. Anthony Stanley and Allen Kareha are also members of the team. 36 Track In the year 1925. track was started under the direction of Coach Wallace. The purpose of this oldest of sports, is to build better character, stronger bodies and nerves, and to develop better co-ordination. Track has always been a successful sport at Marshall, and this year was no exception. The Marshall thinclads, coached by Ted Dietrich, former Marshallite, tied for second place in the class B division of the indoor meet, and received a team trophy at the Mansfield Relays. Many outstanding performances were given this season. A good share of them by senior Richard Skurko. While still a junior. Skurko set a new indoor record in the quarter mile at the Arena, and then went on to cop the 100 and 220 yard dash championships outdoors. In the distance events. Under the guidance of Coach Eugene Ruszkowski. the Bat-lers have twice won the district championship and advanced to the finals of the regional tournament before losing out. This year's squad, with the exception of the infield, has been hit hard by graduation. The infield made up of Gene Janik. Joseph Costanzo, Henry Thomay. and John Petro remains in tact, while the only other returning lettermen are infielder Charles Ellibee. the battery combination of lefty Joseph Stophel and Jack Mosely, and outfielder Robert Giles. Each semester the club sponsors an All Star game, an awards party, and arranges an intramural program. This year Marshall's girls in red acted as hostesses for the Silver Jubilee, a celebration in honor of the twenty-fifth anniversary of the founding of Gym Leaders’ Clubs in the city of Cleveland. Members of the club are chosen by the faculty sponsors on the bases of leadership, dependability, and initiative. There is one representative for each homeroom elected by the popular vote, and serving for one school semester. Each representative must possess the qualification of a good John Marshall citizen. The principal may appoint one member-at-large for every one hundred students enrolled. This year the council has undertaken many worthwhile projects, such as financing a hand book, sponsoring junior and senior high dances, handling a girls sports banquet and raising money through tax stam aspemblies to defray athletic expenses. The officers during the past semester were: Douglas Smalheer. president; Aviva D'Jahon. vice-president; Shirley Reitz, secretary, and Leo Morozko. treasurer. French Honor Society One of the more recently organized clubs of John Marshall, the French Honor Society, held its second annual induction on the fifth of April. The seventeen new members, augmenting the nineteen members remaining from the original twenty-nine, had to meet the requirements of a 90 average in French and a 80” average in other subjects, as well as good character ratings. Five semesters of French are necessary before the student is eligible. Decorated several days before the assembly, the inductees received their pins at the induction ceremonies from Mr. Du Breuil, supervisor of foreign languages in the Cleveland schools. Highlight of the assembly was the presentation of La Plaisanterie by three students and narrator. Patricia Kearney, president of the Society. Other officers are Wanda Tyjeski. vice-president; and Joyce Hutyera, secretary-treasurer. As the Society is only one year old. it has only begun to establish tradition. Key Club A comparatively new organization, the John Marshall Key Club was founded for boys in 1947 under the auspices of the West Park Kiwanis club and the school. Wallace Ogilvy. a member of the faculty for many years, has been the adviser of this group. The Key Club stresses service to the school and community as the chief reasons for its existence. Many of the graduating members of the club took an active part in the campaign for the new basketball scoreboard and in many other phases of the club's activities. Douglas Smalheer was elected International Trustee for the Ohio District for the year 1950. while Robert Giles held the post of Lieutenant Governor of Key Clubs in Ohio for the same year. This is an honorary organization and in order to become a member a boy must have earned an eight-inch letter in one of the fi e verily sports. The club was founded for the purpose of raising the prestige of the boys who won varsi'.y letters. To encourage the wearing of leiizrs, Friday was set aside as letter day. The boys who had previously shunned wearing their letters now bsgan to wear them, and the Varsity M began to mean a lot more at John Marshall. One of the social activities was a party and dance held at school in April. The club, which is now under the supervision of Mr. Nick Giantonio, will lose nineteen members who will graduate this lune. Senior Y-Teens ... In 1922, the Y.W.C.A. began an organization at the old John Marshall called the Friendship Club. (Girl Reserves) For fourteen years this organization was sponsored by Miss Zelma Bundy. One of the earlier slogans of the Friendship Club was. To make friends, and to be friends. The Friendship Club was for girls from the tenth grade through the twelvth grade. The purpose of Y-Teens. as the club has been called since 1946, is: To build a fellowship of women and girls devoted to the task of realizing in our common life those ideals of personal and social living to which we are committed by our faith as Christians. In this endeavor, we seek to understand Jesus, to share His love for all people, and to grow in the knowledge and love of God.” The Senior Y-Teens of John Marshall High School have been under the sponsorship of Miss Mildred Schulte for the past eleven years.
